navigational journeyin 1787 captain bligh was given command of “the bounty”, a three-year-old merchant ship. his mission was to transport breadfruit plants from the island of tahiti to the west indies. we know the popular story of this voyage and the rebellion, in which bligh has been presented as hard, violent and thoroughly unpleasant captain. however, there is quite a lot of evidence to suggest that this picture is far from being true. he seems to have been unusually thoughtful about the health and welfare of his men. for example he made sure that his crew got exercise, insisted on cleanliness on his ship, and adopted the practice of giving them a drink which prevented scurvy every day.when captain bligh arrived in tahiti, it became clear that it would be some months before the breadfruit trees were ready to be taken to the west indies. instead of going off right away, he gave his crew extended shore leave. this may have been a mistake as many were unhappy about leaving when the time came. finally, on the return journey the rebellion took place. the ship was under the command of the rebels and captain bligh had to leave in a small boat. captain blighs achievement was to get to dry land successfully. it is one of the supreme examples of seamanship. apart from bligh there were 18 members of his crew sailing in an open boat about 23 feet long and 7 feet wide. they took with them 25 gallons of water, 150 pounds of bread and 30 pounds of pork. they had no guns or other weapons. the boat was so low in the water that it seemed likely to sink at any time. on one occasion captain bligh tried to land on an island to get more water. he and his men were attacked by hostile natives and one of the crew was killed. at this point bligh decided to sail directly to the dutch settlement on the island of timor without stopping. the distance was about 4,000 miles. the voyage took about 42 days and he had no advanced navigational equipment. however, his skill and commitment proved equal to the task and amazingly no one else died. it was truly a remarkable achievement. 21what is the popularly held view of captain bligh according to paragraph 1?a. he was skilful. b. he was thoughtful.c. he was determined. d. he was unpleasant.22 it may have been a mistake that bligh gave his crew extended shore leave because it caused _.a. the lack of drink b. the death of the tressc. the unhappiness about leaving d. the challenges facing the small boat 23what problem did bligh and his 18 men face after the rebellion ? a. the threat from the rebels. b. conflicts with local people.c. attacks from marine animals. d. the possible sinking of the boat.24what made blighs 4000-mile voyage successful?a. the rebels abuse. b. his great seamanship. c. the crews decision.d. modern navigational equipment.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(a、b、c、和d)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 astanding in front of the “chilkoot trailhead” sign for 15 minutes , i didnt take one step. i was afraid of bears. thats what was keeping me from walking the trail alone. i had hiked through black-bear country back home in colorado, but now i was in alaska, home to the fierce brown grizzly bear.fortunately, a friendly couple arrived and asked me to take their picture. we started talking and soon were walking the trail together. i was relieved. ron and carol were from alaska and they taught me how to stay safe in bear country.i had finally started my hike along the famous chilkoot trail, where more than 115 years ago, thousands of gold miners had walked. i was writing a book about the klondike gold rush, and i wanted to follow in the footsteps of the miners to know what it was really like.ron, carol, and i walked through the forest. as i was looking around at the beautiful scenery in the forest, i tripped (绊倒) over a big tree root and injured my ankle (脚踝). fortunately, my ankle felt better in the morning, and we followed the trail. we went to bed early that night because the following day would be the toughest hike of all.at dawn, we started hiking up the steep (陡峭的), green valley. icy glaciers covered the mountains above. soon we were as high as the clouds and could see only 20 feet in front of us. finally, we reached the top of the chilkoot pass and saw a canadian flag moving in the heavy wind. hours later, we arrived at our campground.the following morning, my ankle was feeling fine, and my fear of bears had mostly disappeared. i said good-bye to ron and carol and walked alone for the next two days. without seeing any bears the entire trip, i finally arrived at bennett lake. i rode the old train down to the town of skagway and checked into my hotel.while relaxing in my comfortable bed in the hotel, i thought of the miners from the klondike gold rush. when the miners reached bennett lake, they had to cut down trees, build boats, and travel 500 miles down dangerous rivers and lakes. then, when they finally reached the goldfields, they had to start digging.25 why did the author stand in front of the “chilkoot trailhead” sign for 15 minutes?a. to wait for ron and carol b. because he felt nervousc. because he met a black bear d. to take photos of the beautiful scenery26the author hiked along the chilkoot trail to .a. find inspiration for his writing b. search alaska for bears c. enjoy the beauty of nature d. look for gold 27when crossing the chilkoot trail, the author .a. got help from two local miners b. once tried to take a boat tripc. hurt himself by accident d. was almost killed by a brown bear28what kind of feeling did the author mainly show in the last paragraph?a. joy b. pity c. worry d. doubti have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. when i was a baby i would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. they used to call me “the beauty at the window”.the early neighbors i could remember were from the second house i lived in. peter and paul were twins. we went to play school together although they were a year older than me. i well remember the alsatian they had which ran into me when i was invited to their fifth birthday party. needless to say, i was well-known for my loud screams after the party. but they said the pet was scared of my screams and didnt appear until the party was over.peter and paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. i could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviorsi just did what i thought was fun. not only did i have a great time performing that first climb, i also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother.the japanese neighbors i had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. they gave me some seaweed for my birthday. thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as i did. perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that i was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a japanese home.maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. but all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. i have decided to be that spark wherever i live and pass love on to my neighbors.29we can guess the alsatian in the twin brothers home is _.a. a small childb. an interesting toyc. a dogd. a bicycle30from the passage we can know that the author _.a. enjoyed the japanese neighbors cooking style mostb. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers familyc. was described as interesting when playing with boysd. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants31what can we infer from the passage?a. the author often moved to other places.b. peter and paul liked to play tricks on others.c. the neighbors the author had were good at cooking.d. the author had a good relationship with her neighbors. i received a call today asking if i would be willing to bring food to a family in need. the mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. of course, i responded with an immediate “yes!”. as i planned the meal in my head, i reflected on how many times over the years i had been asked to prepare food. i have done so countless times with a very open heart. but the truly amazing thing is that i have received double over the course of my life. when my mother passed away, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. a woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. the gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain. later in my life, when i was on bed rest during my pregnancy with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. they arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. even when i was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. how we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter. food is all about comfort. it feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. when you hear people talking about their favorite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. i know that i will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. it is truly a gift i want to prepare and deliver to someone in need.32the author has given lots of food to others because .a. she is a church member. b. she has received others food.c. she is good at cooking.d. she usually has extra food. 33we can learn from the first paragraph that the author .a. was glad to be able to lend a hand.b. knew the family in need very well.c. had to stay in bed for several weeks. d. was tired of preparing food.34which of the following is true about the author?a. her mother died when she was in hospital.b. she didnt get enough food during her pregnancy.c. she thinks offering food is the best way to show love.d. she received food as well as comfort in her hard times.35 according to the passage, which of the following conclusion can we get?a. every dog has its day. b. actions speak louder
