You see, I have to go everywhere these days with a walker, and folks are constantly holding or opening doors for me, so this was not unusual. However, I told the gentleman that the door had an automatic opener, and he did not need to stay to hold it open. He said, “Here I thought I would have an opportunity to be helpful.”At that, I backed up, let the door close, and allowed him to reopen the door, not using the automatic control this time. His comment then was “Well, now I feel like that I have accomplished something helpful and worthwhile today.”We never know how someone else is feeling. We seniors seem to feel we can take care of ourselves at all times. That random act of kindness brightened not only my day, but to my joy and delight, also the day of that white-haired senior citizen. I felt a glow for the rest of the day, and, hopefully, so did he!So, gentle readers, never hesitate to offer kindness. You may find to your amazement that there is more kindness in your community than you ever believe possible. 24. What does the underlined word “this” in the first paragraph refer to? A. Senior citizens need our care. C. Opening doors for others is helpful. D. The white-haired gentleman was kind. CEndless playing of songs like All I Want for Christmas Is You in shops during the festive season doesnt just drive us mad the songs also make us more careless with our money, theresearch has warned. While the repeated performance of Jingle Bells may seem like an innocent attempt to raise customers spirits during the nightmare of Christmas shopping, the songs also have a more delicate impact.“Background music or Muzak can be used by marketers to impose cultures such as the commercialization of Christmas onto consumers and influence their behaviour,” experts said.Dr Alan Bradshaw of Royal Holloway, University of London, said,“Festive jingles are forcefed to Christmas shoppers to change their mood, influence their sense of time and what sort of products they buy. In other words, this is an attempt to control their shopping habits in a way that they might hardly be aware of.”“Often we are told that we have the freedom to choose where we want to shop, but during Christmas the use of music in this way is so common that our freedom to choose disappears.”Dr Bradshaw and Professor Morris Holbrook of Columbia University examined the phenomenon and found that retailers often “dumb down” the music played in shops to relax customers, meaning it is easier to control their behaviour. It is thought that slowing down the rhythm of music in shops can trick customers into thinking less time has passed, and therefore they spend more time examining the shelves, for example. Some providers of background music have been known to promote their services by claiming they can boost profits by controlling the behaviour of customers.“A common trick is to take a popular current song and record an instrumental version which can be slowed down or sped up at different time of the day to influence behaviour in different ways,” Dr Bradshaw said. Background music is often classed as “Muzak” in honour of the Seattlebased company which began producing its softsounding melodies in the 1930s.28. A study was led by researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah and Arizona State University, including researchers from the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation may have found the answer. According to the results, elephants have 38 additional modified copies of a gene (基因) that encodes p53, a well-defined tumor (肿瘤) suppressor, as compared to humans, who have only two. Further, elephants may have a more powerful mechanism for killing damaged cells that are at risk for becoming cancerous. In isolated elephant cells, this activity is doubled compared to healthy human cells, and five times that of cells from patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, who have only one working copy of p53 and more than a 90 percent lifetime cancer risk in children and adults. The results suggest extra p53 could explain elephants increased resistance to cancer. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer. Its up to us to learn how different animals overcome the problem so we can adapt those strategies to prevent cancer in people,” says co-senior author Joshua Schiffman, M.D., pediatric oncologist (肿瘤学家) at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Primary Childrens Hospital. According to Schiffman, elephants have long been considered a walking problem. Because they have 100 times as many cells as people, they should be 100 times more likely to have a cell slip into a cancerous state and cause the disease over their long life span of 50 to 70 years. And yet its believed that elephants get cancer less often, a theory confirmed in this study. Analysis of a large database of elephant deaths estimates a cancer death rate of less than 5 percent compared to 11 to 25 percent in people. 32. Why do humans often get cancer compared to elephants according to the passage? A. Elephants are bigger than humans.B. Elephants have more p53 than humans. C. Elephants are not as clever as humans.D. Elephants eat more than humans. 33. Which of the following is right according to the passage? A. Some damaged cells may be dangerous.B. Some damaged cells are not dangerous. C. Some damaged cells cant be cancerous.D. Some damaged cells in elephants bodies are more dangerous than those in humans bodies. 34. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Elephants have more cells than people. B. Elephants can get cancer easily. C. Elephants seldom die from cancer. D. Elephants often die from cancer. 35.
