福建省厦门市集美区灌口中学高中英语 unit1 a land of diversity教案 新人教版选修8备课日期 2014年 4 月 30 日课 型reading教学目标知识与技能1. ss will be able to know more about the usa and california.过程与方法2. ss will be able to use relevant reading strategies such as predicting, skimming, scanning to accomplish some tasks.3. ss will try to understand the meaning of the important words , expressions and difficult long sentences in the reading passage.1.through talking about the usa and california, ss will review what they already know about the geography of the usa and focus on the position and history of california.2. through reading a passage about the history of california, ss will focus on the settlement of this multicultural state.情感态度与价值观1. ss will get to know the diverse cultural characteristics of the usa and develop their cross-cultural communicative awareness.2. ss will develop their ability of self-study and cooperative study.教学重点ss will be able to know about the great events in the history of california.ss will be able to base different reading tasks on different reading strategies .教学难点ss will be able to explain why california is called a land of diversity.教学方法task-based teaching; elicitation teaching; cooperative learning; discussion, retelling etc.教学用具the multi-media, bb and other teaching tools课时安排1 period教 学 内 容设计与反思板书设计: step1. get the ss to look through warming-up and pre-reading to finish some exercises. (the aim is to direct the students to understand the topic and to gain the useful information about the usa .)1. ask the students to describe what they know about the usa.2. group work: look at the map of the usa with your group. write on the map the names of as many of the following as you can. compare your names with other groups.3. pre-reading1) general knowledge quiz about california2) show the students some pictures and encourage students not only to say what each picture is about but how each one relates to california.3) predicting- read the title and subtitle of the passage and learn to predict the main idea.what do you know about california? what catches your eyes first in the text?how is each picture on page2-3 relevant to the history of california?step2. get the students to read the passage-california in groups and do the comprehensive exercises.(the aim of this part is mainly to improve the students reading skills.)1. skimmingwhat is the topic of the text? (para1- the history of california)divide the passage into three parts and then match the main idea of each part.part1(para 1) a. the history of settlement in california.part2(para2-9) b. the future of california.part3(para10) c. brief introduction of california.2. scanning to answer some questions in each part. 3. detailed reading: complete the form (the purpose is to improve the students ability of looking for useful information.) step3. get the ss to find ,analyze and learn the long-complex sentences .( the purpose is to improve the students ability of summing &chewing, summarizing knowledge)1however, it is likely that native americans were living in california at least fifteen thousand years ago. 2two centuries later, the spanish had settled in most parts of south america and along the northwest coast of what we now call the united states.3. of the first spanish to go to., the majority were. p24that is why today over 40% of californians speak spanish as a first or second language.5. some died or returned home, but. p26although chinese immigrants began to arrive , it was the building of the rail network from the west to the east coast that brought even larger numbers to california in the 1860s.7it is believed that before long the mix of nationalities will be so great that there will be no distinct major racial or cultural groups, but simply a mixture of many races and cultures.step4. get the students to discuss the following questions:1.why is california in the 21st century such a multicultural community?
