One day I decided to write one of my favourite quotes on the fence for someone else to see. But when I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine. He came out and I was afraid he would be angry with me. He was not known to be a friendly person. He looked at me angrily and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he went back inside. I was terrified for a while, but when I went back to the fence, I noticed two words had been added: “Thank you.”Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. BWhen a cake is brought to the table at a birthday party, it is usually decorated with candles. It is said that the tradition of lighting birthday candles was invented by the ancient(古老的)Greeks; it has taken on different meanings through the years. Today, one of the most popular birthday traditions is to blow out the candles all at once to make a secret wish come true. In order to please Artemis, the goddess of the moon, the ancient Greeks arranged something special for birthdays. A moon-shaped cake was baked and decorated with lit candles. They thought the smoke from the candles would carry an offering(祭品) up into the sky, where they believed Artemis lived. The tradition of lighting birthday candles continued in Europe, where candles were sometimes kept burning all day on a persons birthday, partly as celebration and partly to keep away evil spirits. It was believed that the blowing out of candles represented ones prayers(祈祷) to the gods. Some cultures believe it is a bad luck to blow out the candles until after the evening meal is eaten. Traditionally, one candle represents a year of the persons age. Some families prefer to add an extra candle for good luck. But that practice is improper when a very young child is celebrating a third birthday. Generally, older peoples birthdays are celebrated by placing just a few candles to represent, such as an eight for 80th birthday. Todays birthday candles are made in different shapes, like animals or flowers. One or two candles in the shape of numbers are sometimes used instead of lots of candles; for example, a four-shaped and a zero-shaped candle would represent 40. 47. Why did the ancient Greeks arrange something special for birthdays? A. To make their dreams come true.B. To celebrate a persons birthday. C. To protect themselves from evil spirits.D. To please the goddess of the moon.48. What is the tradition of lighting candles for birthdays like in Europe? A. The candles were always kept burning all day on a persons birthday. B. The blowing out of candles represented ones prayers to the god. C. Some cultures believe it is right to blow out the candles before the evening meal. D. The Europeans sometimes keep burning the candles all day just as a celebration. 49. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? A. In some families, people would add an extra candle without any special meaning. B. It is common to see a cake with four candles on a three-year-old childs birthday. C. Traditionally, people can use an eight-shaped and a zero-shaped candle to represent 80. D. Usually one candle is placed on a cake for each year of the persons age. 50. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. It is said that the ancient Greeks invented the tradition of celebrating birthdays. B. The ancient Greeks believed that Artemis lived in heaven(天堂). C. Lighting birthday candles hasnt taken on any new meanings through the years. D. The tradition of lighting candles for birthdays came from Europe. CWith the fast development of China, is Putonghua becoming the preferred language? Not anytime soon, says EF Education First, a company that works on English language training. Instead, English will keep its dominance(绝对优势). The British council(国会) reports that by 2020, two billion people will be studying English. That study result is good news for English speakers like me, who have tried to learn a foreign language. It is reported that only 10% of native(本土的) Americans can speak a second language, compared(与比较) to 56% of European Union citizens. At present English still seems to be the most basic language for global business success. In fact, as many as 100,000 native English speakers are teaching in China at present. More and more women are going to colleges, and they often perform better in literacy classes than men. Second, international companies use English more than local ones. People there usually speak English at work. At last, people in European countries speak great English, Asian countries are in the middle, and everyone else falls behind. Scandinavians and the Dutch are the English-as-a-second-language superstars; as you move south through Europe, peoples English language ability goes down but is still good. Asian countries, led by Singapore and Malaysia, are at the middle level. And if youre planning to visit Panama, Thailand or Libya, make sure you have your dictionary with you. 51.
