Unit 2 Working the land新题型短文语法填空(由2013黄山市二模改编)When a customer finds that a purchased item is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the producers claim for it, the first step is to give the warranty,or any other records which might help, to the store of purchase. This action will often produce results. However, if not, there are various means to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” the consumer takes their complaint, the faster they can expect a settlement. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumers favor, assuming they have a just claim. Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the store, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter. Complaining is usually most effective when done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate the problem with the item. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does not work at all and the sound is unclear” is better than “This stereo does not work.” The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the producer. If so, the consumer should state the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. If a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. They can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to an organization responsible for protecting consumers rights.参考答案:1satisfied 2.helpful/useful 3.seriously4.faster/sooner 5.phone/telephone 6.effectively7.demonstrating/showing/explaining 8.Take 9.threatening10.charge一、单句语法填空1(2015安徽,阅读B)Their _ (expand)business became a large corporation in 1996.2People from all the corners came to the city center,_ (make)it very crowded.3(2015陕西,完形)_ (satisfy)that Id done a good job,I would happily return the comb to Dad.4With all his attention _ (focus)on his experiment,he has no time to spend with his family.5(2015湖南,阅读表达)College is when we should focus _ a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.6(2015浙江,六选五)You and the professor will be able to examine specific points that are _ (confuse)to you.7Dina,_(struggle)for months to find a job as a waitress, finally took a position at a local advertising agency.8(2015江苏,阅读A)Always get rid _ your rubbish properly and recycle waste(e.g.,glass,paper)where possible.9(2015安徽,完形)Changing our spending habits may be the best way _ (reduce)the amount of rubbish.10Modern science has given clear evidence _ smoking can lead to many diseases.答案1.expanding2.making3.Satisfied4.focused 5on6.confusing7.having struggled8.of9.to reduce10.that二、完形填空。For thousands of millions of years the moon has been going round the earth. At that time, the moon was the _1_ satellite(卫星)of the earth.Today,_2_,the earth has many other satellites. All of them are _3_ by man. These manmade satellites are very much smaller than the moon. However, some of them will still be going _4_ the earth thousands of years from now.Manmade satellites dont _5_ because they are going too fast to do so.As they speed along, they _6_ to go straight off into space. They _7_ out of the earth,or its gravity, which _8_ them from doing this.As a result, they travel in an orbit(轨道)round the earth. If a manmade satellite travels about at a certain height,it can keep going _9_ round the earth, just like the moon. This is _10_ it is above the atmosphere(大气),and there is nothing to _11_ it down.If it travels _12_ than that,it will be slowed down so much that it will _13_ the earth.Men have _14_ spaceships to the moon and to the two _15_ planets Mars(火星) and Venus(金星)By putting a camera on _16_ the spaceship to the moon, men have been able to _17_ photographs of the other side of the moon. This side is always _18_ from us as the moon _19_ the earth. The _20_ were later transmitted by radio to the earth. They showed that the other side of the moon is very much the same as the side that turns towards us.1A.first BsecondClast Donly答案:D从常识以及下文的many other satellites可知在人造卫星之前月亮是地球唯一(only)的卫星。 3A.found BdiscoveredCmade Dsent答案:C根据下文These manmade satellites可知这些卫星是人造卫星。4A.with BroundCbehind Dafter答案:B根据上文going round the earth可知这些卫星绕着地球转。5A.fall BriseCbreak Dstop答案:A根据下文的they travel in an orbit round the earth. 7A.pull BpushCtake Dlaunch答案:A卫星离开(pull out of)地球,进入轨道。 keep.from doing.“阻止做某事”。9A.in and in Bon and onCout and out Dup and up答案:B从上文可知卫星会一直绕着地球转。on and on“不停地”。10A.because BwhyCwhether Dwhen答案:A本句介绍前句的原因。This is because.“这是因为”。 slow sth.down“使慢下来”。 13A.leave away Bfall toCgo after Dknock over答案:B根据第二段第一句可知如果它的速度慢下来,卫星会掉入(fall to)地球。 15A.nearest BsmallestCbiggest Dclosest答案:A由常识可知Mars(火星)and Venus(金星)是最近的(nearest)两个星球。 16A.board BrightCleft Dtop答案:Aboard the spaceship“在宇宙飞船上”。17A.form BfilmCcatch Dtake答案:Dtake photographs of“拍照”。18A.far BhiddenCdifferent Dseparated答案:B根据下文可知the other side of the moon是月球背朝地球的那一面。 Today, ultrasonic(超声的) waves are being put to work in laboratories and factories. If an ultrasound generator is placed in a liquid, the waves move the liquid back and forth hundreds of thousands of times each second. This causes materials to mix quickly or to dissolve(使分解,使溶解) in liquids. Paint manufacturers(制造商) use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors. The companies that make film for your camera find that mixing chemicals by the use of sound waves will produce a more sensitive film. The new lightweight(轻量的) type of washing machine uses ultrasonic waves to get clothes clean. Its special ultrasound generator is put into a pail of soapy water containing the soiled clothes. The sound waves drive the soapy water back and forth through the cloth so fast that everything is soon clean. There is also a new kind of dishwasher that works in much the same way. Ultrasonic waves can shake a liquid so fast that tiny holes form all through it. The liquid is actually torn apart by this action. Almost as soon as these holes are made, they fall together again. The result is a powerful pounding action. In the dairy industry this is used for the double purpose of making homogenized(使均匀,使匀质) milk and sterilizing(使无菌) it at the same time. If you look at some raw milk with a microscope, you find that it is made up of little drops of butter fat floating around in a watery liquid. In order to make milk easier to digest, these fat droplets(微粒) may be broken up by forcing the milk through very small openings. The result is called homogenized milk. When the ultrasonic method is used, the sound waves not only break up the droplets but also kill the germs in the milk by pounding them to pieces. (from )1. Why does a paint manufacturer use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors?A. Because it is cheap to use ultrasound to blend colors.B. Because the waves move the liquid so quickly that it can make materials mix quickly or dissolve in liquids.C. Because they can mix chemicals by the use of sound waves.D. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started,“Dear John,I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “were kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.”Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I dont just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures (文化)Some of these differences may be only on the surfacedress, food and hours of workwhile others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate (气候),while getting on with business. Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite;the service is better;you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality (准时). If you invite people to a party at 7 oclock your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest,an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country. 1. The author was unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1 because he thought _.A. the American bank didnt think much of himB. the American bank might hire another personC. its difficult to get used to American cultureD. its easy to misunderstand Americans答案:A。 2The underlined word “highlights” in Paragraph 2 probably means _.A. encourages B. helps to narrowC. increases D. draws attention to答案:D。 3According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences?A. Ask the native people for help.B. Understand and accept them.C. Do things in our own way.D. Do indepth research. 4When invited to a party the people who are usually punctual are_. A. Italians B. Germans C. Greeks D. the British答案:B。 由最后一段“If you invite people.on time in Germany.” Teen peer pressureTeen peer pressure is the influence a teens social group has on him or her.
