Section_Warming Up & Reading PrereadingLeonardo da Vinci is famous all over the world. The smile of Mona Lisa attracts many people.Do you know how he created the painting? Please read the following passage to get the answer.Leonardo da Vinci was one of the great creative minds of the Italian Renaissance. He was not only hugely influential as an artist and sculptor but also talented as an engineer, scientist and inventor. He was widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time. He was born on 15 April, 1452 near the town of Vinci in Florence. In about 1483, he moved to Milan to work as an engineer, sculptor, painter and architect. Da Vinci remained in Milan until the city was invaded by the French in 1499. He may have visited Venice before returning to Florence. During his time in Florence, he painted several portraits (肖像画), but the only one that survives is The Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa was one of Da Vincis favourite paintings, and he carried it with him until he died. Today, it is regarded as the most famous painting in the world, and is visited by many thousands of people every year. The painting, a halflength portrait, depicts a woman with an expression often described as mysterious. Who is this familiar figure? Many suggestions have been made, but the most likely one is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk merchant. Another more unlikely but popular theory is that the painting was a selfportrait. There are certainly similarities between the facial features of the Mona Lisa and of the artists selfportrait painted many years later. Could this be why Da Vinci gave the subject such a mysterious smile?Da Vinci used a technique known as Sfumato (渲染层次) the blurring (使模糊不清) of sharp edges by mixing colours to leave the corners of the eyes and the mouth in shadow. It is this technique that makes the Mona Lisas expression that can be understood in more than one way. Today, the Mona Lisa looks rather sad, in dull shades of brown and yellow. This is due to a layer of varnish (清漆) covering the paint, which has yellowed over the years. It is possible that the painting was once brighter and more colourful than it is now.Warming Up.Look at the following pictures. Can you match the paintings and the painters?1_C_2._A_3._D_4._B_.Appreciate the painting and translate the following sentence. As is known to us, good painting is like good cooking; it can be tasted, but not explained._答案:众所周知,好画犹如佳肴,只可意会,不可言传。Fast Reading.Read the text quickly and complete the main idea of it.The text mainly tells us 1.four of the major movements in 2.Western art over the centuries.Scan the text and then choose the best answer.1The painters during the Middle Ages mainly _.Ashowed people as they really wereBlooked at their environment in new waysCexpressed their respect and love for natureDrepresented religious themes2According to the text, the painters during the Renaissance _.adopted a more humanistic attitude to lifediscovered the rules of perspectivedeveloped oil paintsbroke away from the traditional style of paintingABC D3Who was first to use perspective in his paintings in 1428?ABondone.BRoman and Greek painters.CMasaccio.DThe Impressionists.4Which of the following is NOT true about Impressionism?AIt appeared in the early 20th century.BIt was the beginning of modern art.CIts painters were the first ones to work outdoors.DIt was not accepted at first.5It can be inferred that classical Roman and Greek ideas were _.Aimaginary BrealisticCridiculous Dabstract答案:15DDCABCareful Reading.Read the text carefully and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)1Paintings in the Middle Ages were very realistic.(F)2Painters in the Middle Ages painted mainly religious subjects.(T)3Western art has changed very little over the last seventeen centuries.(F)4Renaissance painters tried to paint things in a realistic way.(T)5Two important discoveries in the Renaissance period were oil paints and drawing in perspective.(T)6Impressionists painted their pictures mainly indoors.(F)7At first people did not like the impressionists paintings.(T)8Modern art began with the impressionists.(T).Read the text again and fill in the blanks.PeriodMain aim of the paintersCharacteristics of the paintings1.The_Middle_Ages (5th to 15th century AD)To represent 2religious themesReligiousThe Renaissance (15th to 16th century)To paint 3.people_and_nature as they really were4.RealisticImpressionism (late 19th to 5early_20th century)To show how 6.light_and_shadow fell on objects at different times of dayNot detailedModern Art (20th century to today)To concentrate on certain 7qualities of the object8.Abstract realisticSummaryFill in the blanks according to the text.Art is 1.influenced by the customs and 2.faith of a people.
