Text analysis and language pointsParagraphs 1-2 AnalysisThe author uses his recent accident -an air crash- as an introduction to the whole story. The first paragraph tells the readers what happens to the author, while the second paragraph describes how his wife reacts to the accident.Question: What does the author mean by “Another helicopter ride. With her linguistic ability, she supported herself by writing German subtitles for French films. Language points7. intuition n. Paragraphs 5-7AnalysisThese paragraphs tell us how the author met Anne, fell in love with her and eventuallymarried her. This is the second flashback.Question: Why did the author feel miffed in his interview with Anne?Answer: He expected Anne to accept the job with eagerness, as most girls would do, because he was a famous American movie star. Question: What does the author mean by “tough love”?Answer: “Tough love” refers to Annes belief that you should be a bit tough with your loved ones in order to get them back to normal life as quickly as possible. Needlessly to say, under this “tough” surface there lies profound love, hence the phrase “tough love” is a case of oxymoron (矛盾修辞法), which is a rhetorical device in which contradictory terms are combined.
