Some experts feel that humans could also benefit from this habit. Cat naps help to build up energy in the body. They are also a good way to get rid of trouble! The doctor asked for a pen and some paper to write down the name of the medicine, but there was no pen or paper in the village, because no one could read or write. The doctor picked up a piece of burnt wood from the fire. He wrote the name of the medicine on the door of the house. “Get this medicine for him,” he said, “and he will soon get better.” Mareks family and friends did not know what to do. They could not read the strange writing. Then the village baker had an idea. He took off the door of the house, put it on his cart, and drove to the nearest town. S. adolescents will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3, 000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking clearly outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death. Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised.First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among females by nearly 10 percent. This statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicated high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent. Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.31. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by _.A. traffic accidents B. smoking-related diseaseC. murder D. all of these32. Every day there are _ high school students who will become regular smokers.A. 750 B. 23 C. 30 D. 3,00033. By dropouts(in the third paragraph) the author means _.A. students who failed the examinationB. students who left schoolC. students who lost their wayD. students who were driven out of school34. The reason for declining adolescent smoking is that_.A. NCI has taken effective measuresB. smoking is prevented among high school seniorsC. there are many smokers who have died of cancerD. none of these35. What is implied but not stated by the author is that_.A. smoking rates among youth have declined very littleB. there are now more female than male smokers among high school seniorsC. high smoking rates are due to the increase in wealth D. smokers at high school are from low social-economic backgroundsPassage Four In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of male superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decision makes for equality and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of the sexes”. If the process goes too far and mans role is regarded as less important and that has happened in some cases we are as badly off as before, only in reverse. It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of “Momism” but we dont want to exchange it for a “neo-Popism”. What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit nor the blame. We have almost given up saying that a womans place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyze mans place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child. The family is a co-operative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. Excessive authoritarianism(命令主义)has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is pertinent (相关的,切题的) not only to a healthy democracy, but also to a healthy family.36. The ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is _. A.fundamental to a sound democracy B.not pertinent to healthy family life C.responsible for Momism D.what we have almost given up37. The danger in the sharin
