Strangely, no one mentioned children to us and the effects of having them. As it turned out, getting married was a natural progress in our relationship, with no major unpleasant experience attached to it, but children? Well, that was an entirely different matter. Dont get me wrong. Both my husband and I love children, and have done everything we can to make them the center of our family life. But over the years, not just from our own experiences, but also from watching marriages of friends, it strikes me that most people getting married have not talked to each other half enough about the question of children. How Wrong Can You Be? Brendan and I knew so little that, when we were expecting our first child, Ben, we really thought that a few weeks after birth we would carry him in a backpack and get on with our lives. How wrong can you be? Ben had a difficult birth and his first months of life were a nightmare. He did not gain weight and he did not sleep. In fact, he did not have 6 hours of unbroken sleep until he was eighteen months old. At one stage he woke every half hour. Naturally, treasured activities which we were involved in had to go. Survival became our major goal. And when I look back, what I remember most was the great love I felt for this poor thin baby with the huge blue eyes. We would not exchange him for anything. Still, how I wish I had been a bit more realistic about what to expect. Some babies act as the textbooks tell you they will, and will feed, sleep, and smile, but most do not. A Basic Difference Brendan and I did not talk very much about our values in child-rearing, so we were very lucky that our views fit. However, close friends of ours were not so fortunate. One couple actually got married without resolving a very basic difference. He wanted kids. She did not. Each assumed the other would change. Neither person did, and the marriage broke up within a couple of years. Another husband I know was shocked when his wife announced that she would be giving up paid work after their first child arrived. Up until then he had assumed that they would be like all the other double-income couples they knew, balancing children and childcare. Luckily, their relationship was strong, and they survived. Children Change Your Life Children do change your life. Things that seem basic in a civilized life, such as privacy in the toilet, will disappear for a few years, because often an anxious child will be demanding to be let in. At the same time it is important not to be cheated by false information which suggests that children get in the way of a fulfilling life. Until you have them it is difficult to describe the depths of love that they will create in you. Those who can hardly bear other peoples children are often surprised to discover that sacrifices seem small when made for these little people whom your love has brought into the world. In some situations there may be children from a previous relationship. All of this means that what both parents feel about children and how you will rear them should be discussed, and discussed thoroughly, before tying the knot. Anyway, your children are your responsibility and joy as long as they live. 1.When the writer and her husband were considering getting married, _.A. they received a lot of advice and warningsB. they were told about the effects of having kidsC. they talked a lot about the question of childrenD. they knew that having children was a natural progress2.What is the attitude of the writer and her husband towards children? _A.
