special” speech, when english teacher david mccullough told graduating seniors at wellesley high school: “do not get the idea that youre anything special, because youre not.” mothers and fathers present at the ceremony and a lot of other parents across the internet argued with mccullough about his words. however, lost in the argument was something we really should be taking to heart - young people actually have no idea whether theyre particularly talented or accomplished or not. in our eagerness to raise their self-esteem, we forget to teach them how to assess their own abilities objectively, which is crucial to get better at anything from math to music to sports. in fact, accurate self-evaluation is a skill we should acquire, too, because most of us tend to view ourselves as above average, not just privileged high-school students.such inflated self-judgments have been found in many studies, and it often happened when we are least competent at a given task in which we rate our performance most generously. in a study published in the journal medical education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest in an essay test were the most charitable(宽容的)in their self-evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more strictly. poor students, the authors note, lack insight into their own incompetence. why should this be? another study, led by cornell university psychologist david dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. people who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor justin kruger, suffer from a “double burden”: theyre not good at what they do, and their incompetence prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.in dunning and krugers study, people in the study scoring at the bottom in tests of logic, grammar and humor greatly overestimated(评价过高)their talents. what those individuals lacked (in addition to clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was “metacognitive skill”: the ability to monitor how well they are performing. in the absence of that ability, people arrived at an extremely hopeful view of their own abilities. theres a paradox(似乎矛盾却正确的说法)here, the authors note: “the skills that lead to competence in a particular field are often the very same skills necessary to evaluate competence in that field.” in other words, to get better at judging how well we are doing at an activity, we have to get better at the activity itself.there are a couple of ways to get out of this dilemma. first, we can learn to make comparisons honestly with others. train yourself to recognize excellence, even if you dont possess it yourself, and compare what you can do against what absolutely excellent individuals are able to accomplish. second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. find a critic who will tell you not only how poorly youre doing, but also what youre doing wrong. as dunning and kruger note, success indicates to us that everything goes right, but what failure indicates is more unclear: anything could have gone wrong. use
