Fit barrel locks top and bottom. If you have to use a key, keep it nearby you may need to get out quickly in the event of fire. If other people such as previous tenants could still have keys that fit, change the locks. Dont give keys to workmen or tradesmen, as they can easily make copies. If you wake to hear the sound of an intruder, only you can decide how best to handle the situation. You may want to lie quietly to avoid attracting attention to yourself, in the hope that they will leave. Or you may feel more confident if you switch on the lights and make a lot of noise by moving about. Even if youre on your own, call out loudly to an imaginary companion most burglars will flee empty-handed rather than risking a confrontation. Ring the police as soon as its safe for you to do so. A telephone extension in your bedroom will make you feel more secure as it allows you to call the police immediately, without alerting the intruder. Draw your curtains after dark and if you think there is a prowler outside phone the Police. Use only your surname and initials in the telephone directory and on the doorplate. That way a stranger wont know if a man or a woman lives there. If you see signs of a break-in at your home, like a smashed window or open door, dont go in. Go to a neighbour and call the Police. If you are selling your home, dont show people around on your own. Ask your estate agent to send a representative with anyone who wants to view your house. When you answer the phone, simply say hello; dont give your number. If the caller claims to have a wrong number, ask him or her to repeat the number required. Never reveal any information about yourself to a stranger and never say you are alone in the house. If you receive an abusive or threatening phone call, put the receiver down beside the phone, and walk away. Come back a few minutes later and replace the receiver; dont listen to see if the caller is still there. Dont say anything an emotional reaction is just what the caller wants. This allows the caller to say what he or she wants to say, without causing distress to you. If the calls continue, tell the police and the operator and keep a record of the date, time and content of each phone call. This may help the authorities trace the caller. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Travel Wisely and With Caution明智又警觉地出游 The following information highlights examples of safety precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your property. This list is not meant to be all encompassing. Moreover, a particular precaution may not be effective in all circumstances. Be Smart On Foot明智地徒步旅行 Plan your route and know where you are going, so you wont appear lost or confused. If you often walk home in the dark, get a personal attack alarm from a DIY store or ask your local crime prevention officer where you can buy one. Carry it in your hand so that you can use it immediately to scare off an attacker. Make sure it is designed to continue sounding if it is dropped or falls to the ground. Carry your bag close to you with the clasp facing inwards. Carry your house keys in your pocket. If someone grabs your bag, let it go, If you hang on, you could get hurt. Remember that your safety is more important than your property. When approached by a stranger, such as for directions, be alert. Project a no-nonsense attitude, keep your distance and move quickly. Never go near a car to answer a question. Dont let yourself be distracted. Criminals often work in pairs - one person gets your attention while the other steals your purse, wallet or shopping bag. Know the neighbourhoods in which you travel. Learn the locations of possible safe havens - police and fire stations, hospitals, and restaurants or stores that are open late. If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street. Walk toward a busy store or restaurant or a lighted house and call the police. Avoid using an enclosed phone box in the street as the attacker could trap you inside. If you feel threatened, yell for help. If you are being followed, do not go home. Go to a busy well-lit area. If a car is following you, turn and run in the opposite direction. While the car is turning around, youll have a chance to get away. If you regularly go jogging or cycling, try to vary your route and time. Stick to well-lit roads with pavements. On commons and parklands, keep to main paths and open spaces where you can see and be seen by other people. Avoid wooded areas. If you wear a personal stereo, remember you cant hear traffic or somebody approaching behind you. Be Cautious In The Car Keep your car in good working condition. Make sure you have enough petrol to get where youre going - and back. Always keeps windows closed and doors locked when driving and keep any bag, car phone or valuables out of sight. Always close windows and lock the doors when you leave the car, even if youll only be gone a few minutes. If you think youre being followed, dont drive home. Drive to the nearest police station, fire station or busy store for help. Dont pick up hitchhikers and dont hitchhike. Stay Alert On the Bus, Underground or Train在公共汽车、地铁或火车上保持警觉 Use only well-lit, busy stops. Do not enter poorly lit tunnels or stairwells alone. Try to stay with a group of people. When boarding, have the exact fare ready so you dont have to open your handbag or wallet in a crowd. On a bus, the safest place to sit is near the driver but away from the door. Try to choose an aisle seat so you can easily move if necessary. Do not sit in an empty train car alone. Try to sit in the middle cars where there are other passengers. Dont take a nap. Stay alert at all times. If someone makes you uncomfortable, change seats. If someone harasses you, loudly say Leave me alone! If the person wont leave you alone, hit the emergency alarm or alert the driver. Observe the people getting off at your stop. If you feel uncomfortable, go to the next stop or go quickly to an area where there are other people. If you are going to be out late, try to arrange a lift home or book a taxi. If using a mini cab, use one that you know to be reliable. Ask for a description of the car colour, make, etc. and check this when it arrives. If you gave your name when you booked, check that the driver can tell you it before you get in. Avoid mini-cabs that tout for business. Always sit behind the driver. If you feel uneasy, ask to be let out in a well-lit area where there are plenty of people. If in doubt, dont get in a taxi. Get recommendations for lodging in safe areas. Talk to a travel agent you trust or your auto club. Get a guaranteed reservation if possible. Choose hotels that have electronic key systems where the rooms are re-keyed after guests check out. Do not pack anything that you cannot afford to lose. Travellers cheques are a safer alternative than cash. Dress conservatively when you travel. You do not want to appear too affluent or touristy. Both looks attract thieves. When checking into your hotel, ask the clerk to write down your room number, rather than announcing it so that others can overhear. The second to sixth floors of a hotel are the safest choices. Because they are above ground level, a break-in from the outside is unlikely, but they can still be reached by fire and rescue equipment. Do a security check of your room when you check in. The door should have a peephole, a deadbolt lock and a safety chain or latch that operates from the inside. Make sure any doors to connecting rooms are locked. Check that all windows or sliding glass doors are closed and locked. Make sure no one is hiding in the wardrobes. Never open your door to let anyone into your room without first looking through the peephole and verifying the persons identity. If it is not someone you called, such as room service or housekeeping, do not open the door. Call the front desk and ask a manager to confirm the purpose of the persons visit. Do not leave money, jewellery or other valuables in your room while you are out. Use the hotel safe, and be sure to get a receipt. *Be Extra Cautious in Public Danger Zones The following information highlights examples of safety precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your property. This list is not meant to be all encompassing. Moreover, a particular precaution may not be effective in all circumstances. Have Good Lift Sense If someone waiting for the lift with you or someone already in the lift makes you uneasy, dont get in. If a person already in the lift has not pushed a floor button, dont get off at your floor. Go back to the lobby and report the suspicious activity. Stand near the control panel. If you are threatened or attacked, push the alarm immediately. Also push several floor buttons. With the doors opening at several floors, the attacker is less likely to succeed. If a person entering a lift makes you uneasy, get off immediately. Dont display large sums of cash in public. Be discreet about the money or other valuables you are carrying. Be alert in public restrooms. If anything seems amiss or if a group of people is loitering in the area, leave quickly and find another facility. Stay alert in crowds to protect your valuables. A thief can use the cover of the crowd to make a quick getaway after stealing your wallet or shopping bag. Dont keep your keys in your handbag. If your handbag is stolen, the thief will have your address and keys to your home. Keep your keys in your pocket. Try to park as close to the entrance of the shopping centre or store as possible. In a parking garage, park on the level that leads directly to the shopping centre, so you can avoid lifts or stairwells. Stay alert for people standing behind parked cars or pillars. At night, park under a light whenever possible. Consider using the shopping centres valet parking service if it offers one. Make a note of your parking spot so that you dont have to wander around the parking lot after shopping. Find your keys before leaving the mall and walk purposely to your car. Make sure nobody is in the car before entering, and lock the doors immediately when you get inside. If you are leaving a shopping centre alone at night, request a security escort to your car. Dont leave packages visible on the seats or floor of your car. Use the boot, or hide purchases under a cover or blanket. Use the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Wisely Try to use the ATM during daylight hours. Take someone with you if possible. Park as close as you can to the ATM. Better yet, go to one inside a busy store or bank. Before using the ATM, look around to make sure no one is lingering in the area. Keep your ATM card and deposits concealed until you get to the machine. Make sure you block others view as you enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If others are crowding you in or hovering, or if the person in front of you lingers after his or her transaction, leave and find another ATM. When finished, put your card and money away quickly. Check to see that you are not being followed. If you are ever forced to use the ATM by someone, remember, your life is more important than your mon
