Itseemstomethatthedictionary39;sauthorshaverelieduponanextravertedmeasureofwisdombaseduponwhatcanbeknownaboutanother39;sthoughtsandactions.However,aperson39;swisdomneednotalwaystobeseenforittobepresentinsignificantmeasure.How,then,canoneapproachsuchanextremelyplicatedandephemeralstatesuchaswisdom? Oneapproachbasesitselfuponthefactthatanyconceptwhichhasasignificantunknownaspectcanbeapproachedthroughantinomiesthepresentationoftwosideswhichappeartobeoppositionwitheachother.Whenonedefinesthephenomenonofwisdomsolelybymeasurable,earthlystandardsonlyonepoleisusedthematerialpoleandtheotherdimensionthespirtualpole,orwhatwemightcalltheitsunknowndimensionthatispresentinanywiseactionwhetheritbeinwordordeedisignored.Whileaonesideddefinitionmayworkinsomesituation,inothersitdistortstherealityofthesituation.Itisthisunknowndimensionofwisdom,whatwemightalsocallitsintrovertedside,thatIwishtoemphasizenow. ImightsaywithoutmuchriskofoverstatingmycasethatthemissingdimensioninWesternlifeistheacceptancethatbalancedwisdom,thetermIamusingtoexpresswisdomthatincludestheabovetwopoles,requiresatransactionwithwisdom39;sopposites,thatis,itsantinomiannature.Ihavepresentedfiveantinomiesofwisdomforyoutoconsider: Earthly(material/instinctual/lumennaturae)andSpiritual(itsunknownaspects/archetypal/lumendei) IndividualandCollective KnowledgeandRelationship WisdomandFoolishness GoodandEvil TraditionalJudeoChristianreligionspeaksmuchaboutwisdom,thechieftextbeingembodiedinthebookofProverbs,whichIconsidetobetheprimeronhelpingoneunderstandwisdom39;sunknownpole.OnecannotgoveryfarintheirunderstandingorgrowthinwisdomiftheypletelydisregardastatementsinProverbslike:thefearoftheLordisthebeginningofwisdom(Prov.1:6).Whetheroneisreligiousornot,anunderstandingofandanondenigratingattitudetowardwisdom39;sunknownpoledemandsanseriousexplorationofarelationshipwiththeimagodei,forhowelsecanonefullygraspthatintheScriptures,wisdomispersonifiedorembodied.Throughpersonificationwecanrelationallyembracewisdomratherthanitbeingsolelyanabstractknowledgeorbeleftasonlyadefinablegoal.Itismyopinionthatwisdomcanbeembracedandlovedonlywhenitispersonified.Onemightcallthistheengagingwisdom39;sheattodistinguishitfromthecooleraspectsofembracingwisdomonlyasconcept. Thequestforbalancedwisdomisanelusivething,muchlikegoingtowardadestinationtowhichoneneverarrives.Insteadofthismakingoneimpatient,Iencourageyoutoconsiderthatallnoblethingsaredifficult,costly,andtimeconsuming.Furthermore,unliketheusualtripswetakeinlife,wisdom39;spathoftendivertsusfromourconsciousintention;wefindourselvesinunknownanddisorientingplaces.Thesetwoaspectsofthepursuitofwisdomareperceivedintuitivelyasthetensionbetweenknowingthatthepathleadstogreaterconnectednessandincreaseyetatthesametimedeconstructionandlackofdefiniteness.Withoutthisunfortableness,inherentinitspursuit,wisdomcannotbemanifested,remainingdead,orperhapsinert. Thepursuitofwisdomis,inpart,abattleoftheheartinwhichthepursuitofpleasureandlesseningofdisfort,pain,orobligationcontinuallypullusawayfromengagingitsunknownpole.TheScripture,outoftheheartflowstheissuesoflife,justtouchesthedepthsofsuchaconfrontation.Concretely,theissueoflifeisbloodwithoutwhichtherecanbenofurtherlifeoronlyalifethatisstagnant.Iencourageyoutomakethepursuitofwisdomasprecioustoyouasyourownbloodandthebloodofothers. 篇二:经验和智慧 Ithinktheessenceofwisdomisemancipation,asfaraspossible,fromthetyrannyofthehereandthenow.Wecannothelptheegoismofoursenses.Sightandsoundandtouchareboundupwithourownbodiesandcannotbemadeimpersonal.Ouremotionsstartsimilarlyfromourselves.Aninfantfeelshungerordistress,andisunaffectedexceptbyhisownphysicalcondition.Graduallywiththeyears,hishorizonwidens,and,inproportionashisthoughtsandfeelingsbeelesspersonalandlessconcernedwithhisownphysicalstates,heachievesgrowingwisdom.Thisisofcourseamatterofdegree.Noonecanviewtheworldwithpletejustice,andifanyonecould,hewouldhardlybeabletoremainalive.Butitispossibletomakeacontinualapproachtowardsjustice,ontheonehand,byknowingthingssomewhatremoteintimeorspace,and,ontheotherhand,bygivingtosuchthingstheirdueweightinourfeelings.Itisthisapproachtowardsjusticethatconstitutesgrowthinwisdom.
