What makes those achievements more impressive is that hes dyslexic. At school Tom, who has worked as a literary agent and now has a full-time job with a digital publishing company, would often find keeping up in lessons so tiring that he would fall asleep. “I found it quite frustrating that everybody else had neat handwriting and could spell and I just couldnt do what they could,” says Tom, who has written a respected biography of crime writer Raymond Chandler. It wasnt until the age of 17 that he was given a test for dyslexia that showed why hed struggled for so long. He was always studying for A-levels including English.“My teacher didnt think Id get the grades I was capable of,” he says. “So she pushed for me to be tested and Im grateful that she did.”Until his diagnosis Tom had been ranked somewhere in the middle of his classes at school. He couldnt understand why assignments would come back covered in red ink. However, after Toms diagnosis, when his condition began to be taken properly into account, he found himself at the top of the class. To study English well, he wrote down new words as he came across them and tried to find somewhere quiet and well lit to read and write. He says people were often surprised that someone with dyslexia wanted to pursue a degree in English. Similarly, when he went to study at University College London, the tutors were initially taken aback at his degree choice. Not everyone understands dyslexia so well. “If teachers arent trained to recognize signs of dyslexia, theyll think children are less able,” he says. To make sure that doesnt happen and to encourage a deeper understanding of the condition among those affected by it, Tom becomes a supporter of the charity Dyslexia Action.21.We can know from the passage that kids with dyslexia tend to .A.be good at learning a new languageB.have trouble in reading and writingC.have natural abilities to become a writerD.be unable to stay focused on something22.According to the text, Tom Williams .A.is living in north London with a crime writerB.lost confidence after he was diagnosed with dyslexiaC.was grateful to his teacher who was very strict with himD.slept in class so often that he fell behind others in his studies23.The underlined phrase “taken aback” in Para. 7 most probably means “”.A.annoyedB.disappointedC.shockedD.satisfied24.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Tom Williams interest in writing helped him realize his dream.B.Tom Williams succeeded in becoming a writer with his teachers help.C.Tom Williams was a supporter of the charity Dyslexia Action.D.Tom Williams overcame dyslexia and managed to become an author.B“Chances are we have all experienced shyness in our lives, and shyness has been associated with negative outcomescharacteristics like difficulty maintaining eye contact, and feelings of humiliation(丢脸) are known to be part of a shy persons characters. Its these traits that tend to affect some shy individuals ability to connect,” says C. Barr Taylor, a professor of psychology at Stanford University. “But while shyness can often be seen as a bad thing, there are ways to use the personality trait to your advantage,” Taylor says. Below are some common shy habits and how you can learn to make them benefit you: Shy people usually reflect inwardly (在内心) a lot. But according to Taylor, all that thinking may not always be a bad thing and it should be viewed as a way you can think actively as you go into a situation. So, for shy people who feel worried about facing a particular challenge or event, Taylor advises slowly approaching the fearful situation if you start to feel anxious. By facing what you are not feeling secure about, Taylor says, you will feel less anxious. “Our brains are amazingthey can become well adapted,” he says. “If you put yourself in a fearful situation, you will get a sense that you are going to do it.” Whats more, shy individuals care deeply about what others think of them, and if it is addressed healthily, they can use it to their advantage to form social connections. Shy people are observant and often pick up on parts of their conversation or surroundings that others may not. “Just because you are shy, that does not mean you are not used to social situations,” Taylor says. “It can actually become a source of strength as you are the observer in the room.” In a study out of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, researchers found an association between college-age adults who were shy and the ability to better identify expressions of sadness and fear compared with those who werent shy. In addition, a shy person has a born drive to absorb a conversation, so they can be great at conversation.25.In the opinion of C. Roads wear out too, and they often need repairing. But new research by a pair of teens suggests the rubber from worn-out tires could lengthen the lifetime of asphalt (沥青) pavement. Also roads made with this material might need fewer patches (补丁). The young researchers presented their findings in May, 2014, as finalists at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The 64th annual Intel ISEF shows some of the best high school science projects from around the globe. Many roads are made with asphalt, which requires much petroleum. But Jordan is a country that has very few oil wells or other sources of petroleum, notes Mohammad Salameh, who is a 10th-grader at the International School in Amman, Jordan. For Jordan, having to import most of the countrys petroleum adds greatly to its cost, the teen notes. The extra expense means that theres less money to build and maintain roads. That has resulted in poorer quality roads. As a result, those roads need to be patched almost constantly. Therefore, 16-year-old Mohammad and his research partner, 15-year-old classmate Adam Belaid, came up with the idea of adding rubber to asphalt. But that rubber can come from old tires. Even a worn-out tire contains much rubber, which means the material should be plentiful, says Mohammad. Drivers in Jordan replaced 9 million tons of tires between 2006 and 2010, and only 0.3% of that rubber was recycled. That leaves much rubber that could possibly go into road construction. But first the teens had to show adding rubber to asphalt resulted in better roads. To test their idea, they created several different asphalt-rubber recipes. They also tried out different temperatures at which the mix was heated. And their tests suggested that when the surfacing material includes 8% rubber, it should hold up for 10 to 15 years of traffic instead of the normal 5 years. And their recipe should reduce the need for patching worn areas from once a year, to maybe once every 57 years in the future.32.It can be learnt from the passage that .A.roads that contain no rubber tend to be only used for six years B.most of the roads in Jordan are made with rubber at presentC.the International Science and Engineering Fair started in 2014D.only 27,000 tons of tires were recycled in Jordan between 2006 and 201033.What made the two teenagers think of carrying out the research?A.Frequent road repairs in Jordan.B.Their interest in recycling old tires.C.The slowdown in the Jordanian economy.D.Their desire to replace petroleum with something.34.We can know from the passage that in Jordan .A.the roads are the worst across the worldB.many people are interested in recycling old tiresC.a typical road is replaced every five years or soD.most roads require patching once every five years35.The purpose of the passage is to .A.list some facts about the 64th annual Intel ISEF B.prove the importance of rubber to road constructionC.introduce a recent study by two teenagers from JordanD.convince readers of teenagers ability of doing research第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding. 36The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. 37 Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we dont have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement. The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the things to be read are at the first sight better or higher than the readings. The writer is communicating something that can increase the readers understanding. 38 Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here “learning” means understanding more, not remembering more information. What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. 39 Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.40 It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.A.Besides gaining information and understanding, theres another goal of readingentertainment.B.Reading for entertainment can increase our understanding for information.C.Thus, we can employ the word “reading” in two distinct senses.D.The writer must be “superior” to the reader in understanding.E.We can get access to the content of those materials easily.F.Such communication between unequals must be possible.G.There is no need to have a good communicating skill. 第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。My mom only had one eye.
