Holiday Shopping Sprees: China Challenging the U.S.?1Chinas consumers are at risk of ruining their “saving for a rainy day” reputation with all the cash they burned through during the Lunar New Year, but are they capable of replacing Americans as the worlds most profligate holiday spenders? 2The seven-day Lunar New Year holiday, also known as Golden Week, is typically one of the biggest spending periods of the year in China. Like Americans at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Chinese consumers greet the arrival of the new year by opening their wallets to stock refrigerators, buy luxury gifts for friends, get new outfits for themselves and splurge on quantities of fireworks large enough to threaten the existence of significant structures. 3With leaders in Beijing encouraging domestic consumption in a bid to balance the countrys export-dependent economy, this years holiday period sparked unprecedented indulgence. Consumer spending over the seven days of Golden Week surged 19% to 404.5 billion yuan, or roughly $61.3 billion, over the same period a year earlier, according to statistics recently released by the Ministry of Commerce. In other words, Chinese shoppers managed to rip through an average of $8.75 billion per day over the break. 4American shoppers, meanwhile, managed to spend only $7.57 billion per day during their own holiday spree, according to the National Retail Federation. 5Does that mean Chinese consumers are showing up their American counterparts?6Not quite. While the Chinese appear to have spent more, its important to remember that the U.S. holiday season lasts two full monthsa shopping mall marathon to Chinas sprint. And, then, of course, there is the vast difference in population. Per capita, Americans spent $24.50 a day over 61 daysand this in the midst of a glacially slow economic recovery. Chinese consumers, despite the countrys intimidating GDP growth numbers, doled out only $6.73 per capita each day of Golden Week. 7With incomes rising in China (42% of Chinese people got raises in the last year), the countrys consumers are bound to continue spending more, especially as the government encourages a more profligate lifestyle. Still, leaders in Beijing will have to find a way to control hefty inflation and mend the countrys broken social safety net before its consumers are likely to feel comfortable gobbling up goods the way Americans do. Granddad Bandit duped others with heroic image1Francis Mara is so mild mannered, authorities say, that even as he was robbing a bank, the teller recalled he looked like he was somebodys granddaddy. This week, the so-called Granddad Bandit met a day of reckoning.2The 53-year-old Mara pleaded guilty Thursday in a Virginia courtroom to two bank robberies and admitted to two dozen more heists in 14 states. 3Lunsford, the investigator in that case, said Mara was polite, cooperative and disarming, and quickly confessed. Mara directed police to his van, where they found police badges, a firefighter helmet and emergency gear, knives and duct tape. Lunsford said a notebook in Maras van contained a half-dozen backstories. In each, Mara was an emergency worker.4The Granddad Bandit bank robberies began a week before Christmas in 2008. Over the next 20 months, the man who became known as the Granddad Bandit stole more than $83,000, crisscrossing the eastern and southern U.S. Julie Andrews, Ramones receive lifetime Grammys1Punk pioneers the Ramones, British actress and singer Julie Andrews and jazz drummer Roy Haynes received Grammy Awards for lifetime achievement.2They were honored alongside country musics Dolly Parton, the Juilliard String Quartet, folk revivalists the Kingston Trio, and gospel legend George Beverly Shea, whose rich baritone is still intact at age 102. The event took place a day before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards are handed out, and the honorees will be acknowledged during the telecast. 3It was a bittersweet moment for the Ramones, a group whose stripped-down, fast-paced songs such as Blitzkrieg Bop and Sheena Is a Punk Rocker paved the way for bands like the Sex Pistol and Green Day.4But they never achieved commercial success, and three of the founding members died in the past decade: bassist Dee Dee Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone, as well as Joey Ramone. The members were not related, and took fraternal stage names.5Still recording and touring is Haynes, a seminal figure in the postwar jazz scene. Now that the days are short, were in the winter of the year, and I think of my life as vintage wine in fine old kegs, he said, waxing poetic. 6He was a rookie compared with Shea, who is confined to a wheelchair but full of one-liners. The Canadian native, who composed the popular hymn The Wonder Of It All,said he was reminded of the farmer who wanted to race a mule in the Kentucky Derby. When asked why, the farmer replied, Look at the company hes keeping.7Andrews, 75, used the occasion to draw attention to budget cuts affecting school music programs. She became one of Hollywoods biggest stars by playing in the 1960s hit movie musicals Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.8Parton, 65, was unable to attend because of a family commitment, she said in a recorded video message. Noting she had already won seven Grammys, she said she was working on new music and expected to double her collection. Elizabeth Taylor treated in hospital for heart failure1Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the eight-time married screen legend, is being treated in hospital in Los Angeles for congestive heart failure. 2The actress was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in America earlier in the week but her latest medical setback was only reported on Friday evening. 3London-born Dame Elizabeth, 78, has been in bad health and wheelchair-bound for several years. 4Elizabeth Taylor was hospitalised earlier this week . suffering from symptoms caused by congestive heart failure, an ongoing condition, her spokeswoman Sam Morrison said in a statement. This issue is being addressed. She is currently being kept in the hospital for monitoring. 5Dame Elizabeth had heart surgery in 2009 to replace a leaky valve and has a long history of health problems. 6She was too frail to attend a celebration of her work with her long-standing Aids charity in New York on Wednesday evening. A special award honouring her achievements was presented in her absence. 7The actress won two Oscars in the 1960s, for her roles in Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Butterfield 8. 8But she is now as well known for a colourful personal life that included two tempestuous marriages to Welsh film star Richard Burton as her screen career. Reagans favorite quotes coming1Like any good after-dinner speaker, when in need of wisdom or simply a good joke, Ronald Reagan liked to consult his note cards.2Sayings from Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and others, a letter received, or anecdotes read or overheard were duly handwritten down on note cards over the decades, as Reagan rose from an actor-turned spokesman for General Electric Co., then California governor and a two-term president. With his letters and diaries already best-sellers, Reagans personal collection of ready-made expressions is being published May 10, part of the ongoing centennial of his birth.3Ronnie was always collecting quotes and sayings that he might want to include in a speech, Reagans widow, former first lady Nancy Reagan, said in a statement released by HarperCollins. He started when he was on the road with GE, and continued throughout his term as governor of California and his years in the White House even after he left Washington. He kept these handwritten cards in his desk and used them as he personalized and edited all of his speeches.4Edited by historian Douglas Brinkley, who also worked on Reagans diaries, the new book cites the famous and the anonymous, the profound and the whimsical. 5According to the books introduction, the index cards were found last year, in a box marked in pen RRs desk, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Calif. They will be displayed at the library upon the books release. British shops will need Chinese currency amid China tourists surge1The influence of Chinese tourists and consumers will become so great over the coming years it will become routine for the Yuan, known officially as the renminbi, to be stocked alongside the Pound, euro and US Dollar. 2Dr Karl Gerth, from Oxford University, has studied the growing worldwide influence of the Chinese consumers in difficult economic times. 3He predicts that a growing number of UK and US brands will soon come under Chinese ownership. He also claims that British shops will soon need to stock renminbi due to unprecedented demand from Chinese tourists. 4He makes his predictions in a new book titled “As China Goes, So Goes the World: How Chinese Consumers Are Transforming Everything, which is based on five years of research and his experience in the Asian nation over the past 25 years. 5 “Already shops on Bond Street (central London) are accepting renminbi from Chinese tourists and in years to come the tastes and desires of Chinese consumers will have to be at the forefront of every successful shop owners commercial considerations,” he said. 6Many Chinese want Western experiences and lifestyles, and these desires are fuelled by intensive advertising. With Chinas huge population and spending power, it is no surprise that big firms are bending over backwards to meet the demands of the Chinese consumer. 7Dr Gerth said Chinas acquisition of Western firms has established them as the worlds next branding superpower. He said during his stay he found that Chinese people were very familiar with all these American brands. 8China doesnt simply want to buy Western goods, he said. Chinese want to create internationally competitive brands of their own, and if they cant spread brands which originated in China around the world, the natural alternative is to seek to take over brands which are already established. 9He added: Chinese want experiences like studying and higher education, especially overseas in the UK or America. They are interested in leisure travel and we are just beginning to see a huge number of Chinese tourists travelling all over the world. 10A recent study published in the journal Tourism Economics found that the Chinese made 3.67 million passenger trips to Europe last year, an increase of almost a fifth on the previous year. It also found that every Chinese package tour to Britain is now expected to include luxury shopping. 11Separate figures show that Chinese buyers now represent almost a third of luxury goods market in Britain. British shoppers only make up around 15 per cent. 12In less than a decade, China has gone from an almost insignificant consumer to a key consumer of global luxury brands, Dr Gerth said, adding that China had also become the worlds largest consumer of luxury cars.13Meanwhile, Dr Gerth said that exact number of British companies being taken over by Chinese firms was unknown but whatever the number, it will be a lot higher in the next few years. Recent takeovers of MG Rover and Volvo by Chinese companies are just the tip of the iceberg, he said. Recruiting in China Pays Off for U.S. College1Dozens of American colleges and universities are seeing a surge in applications from students in China, where a booming economy means that more families can pursue the dream of an American higher education. 2But that success has created a problem for admissions officers. At Grinnell, for example, how do they choose perhaps 15 students from the more than 200 applicants from China? After all, the 11-member admissions committee cannot necessarily rely on the rubrics it applies to American applications. 3Then there is the challenge of assessing an applicants command of English, since some Chinese families have been known to hire “agents” to write the application essay. These are the same advisers who counsel families to spend money on the fancy brochures. “They should save their money,” Seth Allen, the dean of admission and financial aid at Grinnell said. 4Mr. Allen said that few would actually be read by the overworked admissions officers as they plowed through nearly 3,000 applications over all. In fact, the next stop for the brochures, said Jonathan C. Edwards, Grinnells coordinator of international admission, would be the recycling bin. 5Mr. Allen, Mr. Edwards and their colleagues said they spend most of their time on Chinese applications trying to parse the authentic voice and sensibility. 6The admissions officers sometimes reach out to teachers at the applicants high schools. During the last two summers, Mr. Allen barnstormed China stopping in Beijing, Zhengzhou, Changsha and Shanghai. 7For the colleges, such tours are motivated at least partly by money. 8Grinnell, for example, is “need-blind” when considering American students who are evaluated regardless of their ability to pay but its process for admitting international students is “need-aware.” 9So an applicant from China or another country could have an edge if he or she can pay full tuition. 10And yet, in the name of socioeconomic diversity, Grinnell also has a dozen full scholarships set aside for international applicants, including those from China, who need help paying tuition.
