南京理工大学工程硕士英语课程考试试题(2011年3月)Directions: Write all your answers on the Answer Sheet.Part I Reading Comprehension (40 points)Section A Reading in depthDirections: In this section there are 2 passages. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer and mark your choice on your Answer Sheet.Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. You never see him, but theyre with you every time you fly. They record where you are going, how fast youre traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. Theyre known as the black box. When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India Ocean June 30, 2009, the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine (潜水艇) detected the devices homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed. In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U.S. commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear of the plane the area least subject to impact from its original position in the landing wells The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.Modern airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircrafts final moments. Placed in an insulated (隔绝的) case and surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2,000. When submerged, theyre also able to emit signals from depths of 20,000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil on June 1,2009, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say theyre still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one planes black boxes were never recovered.1. What does the author say about the black box?A. It ensures the normal functioning of an airplane.B. The idea for its design comes from a comic book.C. Its ability to ward off disasters is incredible.D. It is an indispensable device on an airplane.2. What information could be found from the black box on the Yemeni airliner?A. Data for analyzing the cause of the crash.B. The total number of passengers on board.C. The scene of the crash and extent of the damage.D. Homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash.3. Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?A. New materials became available by that time.B. Too much space was needed for its installation.C. The early models often got damaged in the crash.D. The early models didnt provide the needed data.4. Why did the Federal Aviation Authority require the black boxes be painted orange or yellow?A. To distinguish them from the color of the plane.B. To caution people to handle them with care.C. To make them easily identifiable.D.) To conform to international standards.5. What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A. There is still a good chance of their being recovered.B. There is an urgent need for them to be reconstructed.C. They have stopped sending homing signals.D. They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil. 57.What does the author say about the black box?A) It ensures the normal functioning of an airplane.B)The idea for its design comes from a comic book.C) Its ability to ward off disasters is incredible.D) It is an indispensable device on an airplane.答案:57 D It is an indispensable device on an airplane原文中的Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. 58.What information could be found from the black box on the Yemeni airliner?A) Data for analyzing the cause of the crash.B) The total number of passengers on board.C) The scene of the crash and extent of the damage.D) Homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash.答案:58 A Data for analyzing the cause of the crash原文定位为第二段最后一句:“the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed.” cause of a tragedy与选项中的cause of the crash一致。原题:59. Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?A) New materials become available by that time.B) Too much space was needed for its installation.C) The early models didnt provide the needed data.D) The early models often got damaged in the crash答案:59 D The early models often got damaged in the crash原文定位于第三段“Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device was completely redesigned.” failed to withstand crashes与选项中的got damaged in the crash同义。原题:60. Why did the Federal Aviation Authority require the black boxes be painted orange or yellow?A) To distinguish them from the color of the plane.B) To caution people to handle them with care.C) To make them easily identifiable.D)To conform to international standards.答案:60 C To make them easily identifiable原文定位于第三段最后一句be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility. to aid visibility意为“有助于提高能见度”,与easily identifiable同义。原题:61.What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A)There is still a good chance of their being recovered.B)There is an urgent need for them to be restructured.C)They have stopped sending homing signals.D)They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.答案:61 A There is still a good chance of their being recovered原文定位于最后一段but statistics say theyre still likely to turn up. =Passage Two Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but- regardless of whether it is or isnt - we wont do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.Al Gore calls global warming an inconvenient truth, as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we dont know enough to relieve global warming, and - without major technological breakthroughs - we cant do much about it.From 2003 to 2050, the worlds population is projected to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mainly, CO2) will be 42% higher in 2050. But thats too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we condemn the worlds poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone elses living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050.No government will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show theyre doing something Consider the Kyoto Protocol(京都议定书). It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didnt. But it hasnt reduced CO2 emissions(up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories(签字国) didnt adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when its really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we dont solve the engineering problem, were helpless.6. What is said about global warming in the first paragraph?AIt may not prove an environmental crisis at all.BIt is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.CSerious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.DVery little will be done to bring it under control.7. According to the authors understanding, what is Al Gores view on global warming?AIt is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.BIt is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.CIt is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.DIt is an area we actually have little knowledge about.8. Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of _.Aeconomic growthBwasteful use of energyCthe widening gap between the rich and poorDthe rapid advances of science and technology9. The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, _.Apoliticians have started to do something to better the situationBfew nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy useC. reductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warmingDinternational cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems10. What is the message the author intends to convey?AGlobal warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.BThe ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology.CThe debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.DPeople have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.题解:Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, butregardless of whether it is or isnt - we wont do much about it. What is said about global warming in the first paragraph?A) It may not prove an environmental crisis at all.B) It is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.C) Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.D) Very little will be done to bring it under control.58. According to the authors understanding, what is A1 Gores view on global warming?A) It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.B) It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.C) It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.D) It is an area we actually have little knowledge about.59. Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of _.A) economic growthB) wasteful use of energyC) the widening gap between the rich and poorD) the rapid advances of science and technology60. The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, _.A) politicians have started to do something to better the situationB) few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy useC) reductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warmingD) international cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems61. What is the message the author intends to convey?A) Global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.B) The ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology.C) The debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.D) People have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming. 第一段开头作者抛出了自己的独特观点:we wont do much about it。 (We will argue over it),甚而做出解决问题的姿态,但这类姿态却不会诉诸于行动(the less likely they are to be observed)。 倒数第二段具体论述了新技术突破作为全球变暖问题出路的观点(the only solution is new technology)。 第一段并不容易理解,因为作者在这里玩弄了一些文字游戏,如may or may not和whether it is or isnt,其真实意图不好把握。 As if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution,直译为“好像仅仅承认它就会使我们走上解决它的道路”,意思也就是承认它就能解决它。 A,经济增长B,能源的浪费使用C,贫富差距拉大D,科技的快速发展More than double by 2050出现在第三段的末尾:With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050介词with可以表示原因,或伴随状态,实际上提示了温室排放翻倍的原因是modest growth,即适度增长。 It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didnt,意思是它允许加入该议定书的国家惩罚不加入的国家,这应该是指该议定书的功能。 But it hasnt reduced CO2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories didnt adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets,这里给出了两点结果,一是它没有减少二氧化碳排放量,二是许多签署国没有采取足够严格的措施来实现2008-2012的目标。 与A相关的内容是最后一段第一句话,the trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when its really engineering one,这里出现了moral problem,A的说法正好源于此。 倒数第二段提到了B所说的新技术:the only solution is new technology,解决全球变暖问题的唯一办法就是新技术。 =Section B (Skimming and Scanning) Directions: In this part, you will have to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions. For questions 11-17, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for
