For each of them there are four choices. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read. Question 1-5 are based on the following passage: There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today- the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances. For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People did not have to explore much anymore. They began to work instead to make life better. In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909. Movies with sound in 1926. The computer in 1928. And jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear. The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over disease. They work very well. They made people healthier and let them live longer lives. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60. By this time most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space. In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of. 1 What was the first great invention? A The wheelB The cameraC MoviesD Nylon2 When did people stop exploring a lot?A In the second half of the 19th century.B In the 1960s.C In the first part of the 20th century.D In the early 1800s3 Which was an important invention in the 19th century?A Movies with soundB The radioC NylonD The computer4 Who made the first step into space?A Japan B RussiaC The United StatesD China5 The possible title for the passage might be_.A “Great Invention of the 20th Century”B “How wheels, Cameras and Computers Were Invented?”C “Peoples Attitudes towards Inventions”D “Great Inventions Influence Our Way of living” Question 6-10 are based on the following passage: In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds-even thousands- of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds, When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl in a counter-clockwise motion. The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricanes rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the united States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6-to-12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea-the mountains of water moving toward the low pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore. 6 When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane?A when it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seasB when it hits the coastlineC when it is more than 75 miles wideD when its winds reach 75 miles per hour7 what is the worst thing about hurricanes?A the destructive effects of waterB the heat they releaseC that they last about nine days on the averageD their strong winds8 The counter-clockwise swirling of the hurricane is brought about by_.A the low-pressure area in the center of the stormB the force of waves of waterC the trade windsD the increasing heat9 Apparently the word “downpour” means_.A heavy rainfallB dangerous wavesC the progress of water to the hurricane centerD the energy produced by the hurricane10 The title for the passage is likely to be _.A Storms and HurricanesB Hurricane: Its Formation and Destructive forceC Where Do Hurricanes Originate?D How Hurricanes Cause Heavy LossesIV Word Derivation (20分)Complete each of the following sentences by using the appropriate form of the word given in the bracket.1 Though the scientist has made quite a few new inventions in that area, his name is still _ to the public.
