湖北省荆州市2014高考英语阅读理解、完形填空训练(9)及答案阅读理解awords:568难度系数:建议用时:9分钟if i could select a word that best describes the majority of american parents, that word would be guiltridden (内疚的)how sad it is to see parents become the willing victims of the “giveme game”, only to discover that, no matter what they do, it isnt enough.in the end, they are looked down for their lack of firmness and blamed when their spoiled children get into trouble.with this in mind, i shall first answer this question: “what do parents owe their children?”and i shall start with what they dont owe them.parents dont owe their children every minute of their day and every ounce of their energy.they dont owe roundtheclock car service, singing lessons, tennis lessons, an expensive car when they reach sixteen, or a trip to europe when they graduate.i take the firm position that parents do not owe their children a college education.if they can afford it, fine.but they need not feel guilty if they cant.if the children really want to go, theyll find a way.here are plenty of loans and scholarships for the bright and eager who cant afford to pay.after children marry, their parents do not owe them a house or money for the furniture.they do not have an obligation to babysit their grandchildren when the parents were on vacation.if they want to do it, it must be considered a favour, not an obligation.in my opinion, parents do not owe their children an inheritance, no matter how much money they have.one of the surest ways to produce a loafer is to let children know that their future is assured.do parents owe their children anything? yes, they owe them a great deal.one of their chief obligations is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for selfesteem is the basis of a good mental health.parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline.parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal belongings.no child asks to be born.if you bring a life into the world, you owe the children something.and if you give him his due, hell have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.1according to the author, _.aparents ought to send children to college as a was no ordinary class. the students who came together were all science or engineering professors at cornell university. they had interrupted their research to accept an invitation to take part in an unusual experiment: “an interesting week of poetry.” this class was part of a study to answer the questions: why is science difficult for many nonscience students? what can teachers learn about teaching if they take a class that is not in their field?the students in the poetry class listened to lectures and took notes. they had reading tasks and had to write three short papers. all students noticed one thingthe importance of spoken words. in science and engineering classes, the instructors put tables and drawings on the blackboard. but in this poetry class, the instructors just talked. they didnt write anything on the board.the scientists and engineers noticed one similarity between science and poetry. in both subjects, students need to find layers(层次) of meaning. some layers are simple, clear, and on the surface;other layers are deeper and more difficult. this search for different levels of meaning doesnt happen much in undergraduate (本科) science classes, but it is important later, in graduate school. and it is always important in humanities(人文学科)both the poetry instructors and their students learned something about teaching from this experience. one poetry instructor, for example, now sees the importance of using careful, clear definitions (定义)when he explains a poem. he also plans to be more informative as he teaches. most of the scientists agreed on several points. first, humanities classes might help science students to see patterns and decide which information is important. second, the poetry class was fun. one engineer decided, “we need to change the way we teach engineering to make it an enjoyable experience for students.”but perhaps the most important result of the experience was this:all of the professors began to think about how they teach and how they can teach better.5. what do we know about this unusual class?a. the teachers did lots of writing on the board.b. the teachers were invited to attend several lectures.c. the students were no garden so lovely as his. all sorts of flowers grew there, blooming in their proper order as the months went by, one flower taking another flowers place, so that there were always beautiful things to see, and pleasant odors to smell. hans had many friends, the most devoted being the miller. so devoted was the rich miller to hans that hed never go by his garden without plucking a large bunch of flowers or a handful of sweet herbs, or filling his pockets with fruits. the miller used to talk about noble ideas, and hans nodded and smiled, feeling proud of having such a friend. the neighbors thought it strange that the rich miller never gave hans anything in return, though he had hundreds of sacks of flour, many cows and sheep, but hans never troubled his head about these, and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to listen to all the wonderful things about the unselfishness of true friendship. in spring, summer, and autumn hans was very happy, but when winter came, and he had no fruit or flowers to sell, he suffered from cold and hunger. though extremely lonely, the miller never came to see him then. “theres no good in going to see hans while the snow lasts.” the miller said to his wife, “when people are in trouble they shouldnt be bothered. so ill wait till the spring comes when hes happy to give me flowers.” “youre certainly very thoughtful,” answered his wife, “its quite a treat to hear you talk about friendship.” “couldnt we ask hans up here?” said their son. “ill give him half my meal, and show him my white rabbits.” “how silly you are!” cried the miller. “i really dont know whats the use of sending you to school. if hans came up here, and saw our warm fire, our good supper, and our red wine, he might get envious, and envy is a most terrible thing, and would spoil anybodys nature. i am his best friend, and ill always watch over him, and see that hes not led into any temptation. besides, if hans came here, he might ask me for some flour. flour is one thing, and friendship is another, and they shouldnt be confused. the words are spelt differently, and mean quite different things. everybody can see that.” he looked seriously at his son, who felt so ashamed that he hung his head down, and grew quite scared, and began to cry into his tears. spring coming, the miller went down to see hans. again he talked about friendship. “hans, friendship never forgets. im afraid you dont understand the poetry of life. see, how lovely your roses are!” hans said he wanted to sell them in the market to buy back his things which were sold during the hard time of the winter. “ill give you many good things. i think being generous is the base of friendship.” said the miller. “and now, as ill give you many good things, im sure youd like to give me some flowers in return. heres the basket, and fill it quite full.” poor hans was afraid to say anything. he ran and plucked all his pretty roses, and filled the millers basket, imagining the many good things promised by the miller. the next day he heard the miller calling: “hans, would you mind carrying this sack of flour for me to market?” “im sorry, but i am really very busy today.” “well,” said the miller, “considering that im going to give you my things, its rather unfriendly of you to refuse. upon my word, you mustnt mind my speaking quite plainly to you.” poor hans was driven by his friendship theory to work hard for his best friend, leaving his garden dry and wasted. one evening hans was sitting by fire when the miller came. “hans,” cried the miller, “my little boy has fallen off a ladder and hurt himself, and im going for the doctor. but he lives so far away, and its such a bad windy night. it has just occurred to me that you can go instead of me. you know im g
