But he wanted to find out whether they deserved his help. In the center of the main road into the town he placed a very large stone. Then he hid behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow. Who put the stone in the center of the road? said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained about the stone in the center of the road but not one of them tried to remove it. Later in the afternoon a young man came along. He saw the stone and said: The night will be very dark. Some neighbor will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone. The young man then began to move the stone. Pie pushed and pulled with all his might to remove it. How great was his surprise at last when, under the stone, he found a bag of money and a piece of paper with these words: This money is for the first honest man who removes this stone from the road.Questions 26 to 29 are based on tile passage you have just heard.26. What did the rich man want to find out?27. What did he put in the center of the road?28. Which of the following statements is true?29. What did the young man find under the stone?Passage Two Modern zoos are very different from zoos that were built fifty years ago. At that time, zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages that were made of concrete with iron bars, cages that were easy to keep clean. Unfortunately for the animals, the cages were small and impossible to hide in. The zoo environment was anything but natural. Although the zoo keepers took good care of the animals and fed them well, many of the animals did not thrive; they behaved in strange ways, and they often became ill. In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural habitats. The animals are given more freedom in large areas so that they can live more as they would in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. Trees and grass grow in the cages, and streams of water flow through the areas that the animals live in. There are few bars; instead, there is often a deep ditch, filled with water, surrounding an area where several species of animals live together as they would naturally.Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.30. What were zoos like fifty years ago?31. Why did animals often become ill in the past?32. What are modern zoos like?Passage Three A Broadway comedian once had a nightmare: he dreamed he was telling stories and singing songs in a crowded theater, with thousands of people watching him but no one laughed or clapped. Even at $100,000 a week, he says, that would be just hell on earth. It is not only the actor who needs applause. Without praise or encouragement anyone can lose self-confidence. Then we all have a double necessity: to be praised and to know how to praise. No one, great or obscure, is untouched by genuine appreciation. Children especially are hunger for encouragement, and the want of kindly appreciation in childhood can endanger the growth of character. A young mother once told me of a heart-aching story: My little daug
