to analyze and interpret history Yet by writing about the past in a vivid and compelling manner storytellers can bring earlier eras to life and force readers to consider them seriously Among those taking on the task of recounting history are some black writers who attempt to examine slavery from different points of view Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison deals specifically with the legacy of slavery in her book Beloved The main character in this novel a former slave called Sethe lives in Ohio in the years following the Civil War but she cannot free herself from her horrific memories Through a series of flashbacks and bitter reminiscences the reader learns how and why Sethe escaped from the plantation she had lived on the fate of her husband who also tried to escape and finally what happened to the child called Beloved Morrison s scenes of torture and murder are vivid and strongly convey the desperation of the slaves and the cruelty of their owners Charles Johnson s Middle Passage approaches slavery from a different yet no less violent vantage point His main character Rutherfprd Calhoun is a ne er do well free black American who stows away on a slave ship bound for Africa to collect its cargo Put to work after he is discovered Calhoun witnesses firsthand the appalling conditions in which the captured Africans are transported When they finally rebel and take over the ship he finds himself in the middle and is forced to come to terms with who he is and what his values are Neither Beloved nor Middle Passage is an easy read but both exemplify African American writers attempts to bring significant historical situations alive for a modem audience 1 This passage is mostly about A the causes of slavery in America B black writers in the late 20th century C why Morrison and Johnson wrote the books they did D two novels that deal with slavery 2 Beloved is set A on a slave ship B on a plantation before the Civil War C in Ohio after the Civil War D in an repeat the past if we don t learn about it 学易网校 2014 年职称英语等级考试综合类 B 级模拟试卷 一 6 4 The writer emphasizes that the two books are similar in their A use of flashbacks B treatment of women C criticism of whites D portrayal of violence 5 The word appalling means A terrible B surprising C guilty D unrealistic 第2篇 Longer Lives for Wild Elephants Most people think of zoos as safe places for animals where struggles such as difficulty finding food and avoiding predators don t exist Without such problems animals in zoos should live to a ripe old age But that may not be true for the largest land animals on Earth Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health They develop diseases joint problems and behavior changes Sometimes they even become infertile or unable to have babies To learn more about how captivity affects elephants a team of international scientists compared the life spans of female elephants born in zoos with female elephants living outdoors in their native lands Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals in their care documenting factors such as birth dates illnesses weight and death These records made it possible for me researchers to analyze 40 years of data on 800 African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe The scientists compared the life spans of the zoo born elephants with the life spans of thousands of female wild elephants in Africa and Asian elephants that work in logging camps over approximately the same time period The team found that female African elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16 9 years Their wild counterparts who died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years more than three times as long Female Asian elephants followed a similar pattern In zoos they lived 18 9 years while those in the logging camps lived41 7 years Scientists don t yet know why wild elephants seem to fare so much better than their zoo raised counterparts Georgia Mason a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada who led the study thinks stress and obesity may be to blame Zoo elephants don t get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild and most are very fat Elephant social lives are also much different in zoos than in the wild where they live in large herds and family groups Another finding from the study showed that Asian elephants born in zoos were more likely to die early than Asian elephants captured in the wild and brought to zoos 学易网校 2014 年职称英语等级考试综合类 B 级模拟试卷 一 7 Mason suggests stress in the mothers in zoos might cause them to have babies that are less likely to survive The study raises some questions about acquiring more elephants to keep in zoos While some threatened and endangered species living in zoos reproduce successfully and maintain healthy populations that doesn t appear to be the case with elephants Currently zoos are net consumers of elephants not net producers Mason says 1 According to the first two paragraphs what is the difference between zoo animals and zoo elephants A have difficulty eating food B 1ive to a ripe old age C are not afraid of predators D develop health problems 2 Which of the following about the international scientists research on the life spans of elephants is NOT true See paragraph 3 A They compared zoo elephants with wild elephants B They kept detailed records of all the elephants in their care C They analyzed the records of the elephants kept in zoos D The zoo born elephants they studied are kept in European zoos 3 What do the scientist find in their research A Female elephants live longer than male elephants B Female zoo elephants live longer than their wild counterparts C Female zoo elephants die much earlier than their wild counterparts D Elephants in zoos and those in the wild enjoy the same long life spans 4 What probably causes stress and obesity Zoo raised elephants generally suffer from A They do not like living in herds B They do not get enough exercise C They do not like living with their families D They don t have enough food to eat 5 What is the author s attitude towards keeping elephants in zoo A It may not be a wise policy to keep elephants in the zoo B Elephants are no longer an endangered species C Zoo born elephants should be looked after more carefully D Zoos should keep more animals except elephants 第3篇 Excessive Demands on Young People Being able to multitask is hailed by most people as a welcome skill but not according to a recent study which claims that young people between the ages of eight 学易网校 2014 年职称英语等级考试综合类 B 级模拟试卷 一 8 and eighteen of the so called Generation M are spending a considerable amount of their time in fruitless efforts as they multitask It argues that in fact these young people are frittering away as much as half of their time again as they would if they performed the very same tasks one after the other Some young people are juggling an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study At the same time that they are working young adults are also surfing on the Internet or sending out emails to their friends and or answering the telephone and listening to music on their iPods or on another computer As some new device comes along it too is added to the list rather than replacing one of the existing devices Other research has indicated that this multitasking is even affecting the way families themselves function as young people are too wrapped up in their own isolated worlds to interact with the other people around them They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house nor can they eat at the family table All this electronic wizardry is supposedly also seriously affecting young people s performance at university and in the workplace When asked about their perception of the impact of modern gadgets on their performance of tasks the overwhelming majority of young people gave a favorable response The response from the academic and business worlds was not quite as positive The former feel that multitasking with electronic gadgets by children affects later development of study skills resulting in a decline in the quality of writing for example because of the lack of concentration on task completion They feel that many undergraduates now urgently need remedial help with study skills Similarly employers feel that young people entering the workforce need to be taught all over again as they have become deskilled While all this may be true it must be borne in mind that more and more is expected of young people nowadays in fact too much Praise rather than criticism is due in respect of the way today s youth are able to cope despite what the older generation throw at them 1 According to a recent study what is probably true about the multitasking Generation M A They are highly commended for being so effective and efficient B They waste more time than they should save contrary to common assumptions C They should prioritize and focus on the most important tasks on hand D They need to improve their organizational skills so as to complete all their tasks 2 With the advent of new gadgets what happens to Generation M s present e devices A They make way for the latest and greatest and are retired by the young people B They are put away temporarily but stay in rotation for their owners to choose from C They become part of the ever increasing collection of novelties D They are either sold or traded so that their owners can update their toys and hobbies 学易网校 2014 年职称英语等级考试综合类 B 级模拟试卷 一 9 3 What is the negative effect of multitasking on Generation M A It makes them feel lonely and pitiful B It makes them cool and puzzling to family and friends C It makes them selfish and possessive D It makes them impolite and ungrateful 4 What is the biggest problem for multitasking undergraduates in universities A They should adjust their academic attitudes seriously B They should seek psychological professionals for assistance C They should take some crash courses to catch up with their classmates D They should try harder to focus on one task before moving on to the next 5 What should parents do with today s youth A Be supportive and understanding B Be realistic and lower their expectations C Be encouraging and let their children stick to their old habits D Be patient and hope everything will work out just fine eventually 第五部分
