The first and only Ukrainian to earn a Champions League winners medal, Shevchenko is also the first foreigner ever to finish top scorer in his debut season in Italy. Now he is aiming for another breakthrough by firing Ukraine to their first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup. Andriys early years had not gone quite so smoothly, for at the age of nine, this boy from Dvirkivshchyna, not far from Tchernobyl, was one of thousands of local children forced to flee to the coast with their families to avoid the terrible after-effects of the nuclear power plant disaster. On a sporting level too, the path to glory was full of major obstacles (障碍), as in 1986, he failed a trial for entry to a specialist sports school. But luckily for young Shevchenko and for the game of football, Alexander Shpakov, a scout for Dynamo Kiev, spotted him playing in a youth league match in the same year. In 1993, Shevchenko joined the Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev and played for this club until 1999. During this time, Shevchenko scored 17 goals in 26 Champions League games and this made him the hottest property in European football. AC Milan finally paid 25 million dollars to bring him to the San Siro. The club received reward only a few months later, Shevchenko finished top scorer in Serie A in his debut season with 24 goals. The sharp shooter clocked up his 100th Serie A goal this season. He is the worst nightmare of Serie A defenders. His fans dub him the lethal weapon, yes, he really is! Andriy Shevchenko was named European Football of the Year (Golden Ball), one of world footballs greatest awards on 13 December 2004. This assures his place in European soccers hall of game. The award crowns (圆满完成) a beautiful year, he said. 56. Which of the following statements that describe Andriy Shevchenko is NOT true? A. Andriy Shevchenkos sporting career was not quite smooth. B. Andriy Shevchenko has earned a Champions League winners medal. C. Andriy Shevchenko has been honored as European Football of the Year. D. Andriy Shevchenko has joined in a FIFA World Cup. 57. Shevchenkos first season in Serie A of Italy is the year of _. A. 1986 B. 1993 C. 1999 D. 2004 58. The San Siro in paragraph 3 might refer to _. A. the boss of the club B. the stadium of the club C. the coach of the club D. the city where the club lies 59. In 2004, Shevehenko scored _ goals in Serie A of Italy. A. 17 B. 24 C. 100 D. Not mentionedB Our math test started and I was sitting there and working away quite quickly. I looked around with 15 minutes left, because I had finished and was checking my test. I noticed something very special! Mr. Ward was staring right at one of the kids that seemed to be only halfway done with his test. Every test we took, there was always one guy scrambling at the last minute to finish his test. He would turn the pages and you saw blank spot after blank spot. Sometimes I even saw entire pages that were left blank. Mr. Ward did not take his eyes off this kid. It seemed strange to me. For the rest of the test, Mr. Ward watched that kid as he struggled furiously (猛烈地), flipping papers back and forth and writing furiously and erasing even more furiously. He seemed to use his calculator a lot more than he needed. After the test was finished, Mr. Ward gave his end of the year speech, basically along the lines of good luck and good job. Then I saw him go to the kid he was watching and tell the kid to go into the hall. Mr. Ward walked out of the room and went into the hall silently. He closed the door and from that moment on, I heard about 4 minutes of Mr. Ward shouting at the kid. He got his test torn up and a zero for the end of the year exam and also failed for the term and had to take summer school. That was the first and the last time that I had seen Mr. Ward ever yell like that. Obviously, the guy had written his answers inside the sleeve (外壳) of the calculator and every time he was using his calculator he was really looking at the formulas (公式) and other information he had written inside of the sleeve, which was all in vain because Mr. Ward spotted it a mile way. 60. From this passage we know that _. A. Mr. Ward disliked his students B. the student Mr. Ward was staring at wasnt good at mathematics at all C. the student Mr. Ward was noticing was working at his test quickly D. the author was trying to help the kid out61. A. intended to attract Mr. Wards attention B. needed to calculate C. wanted to glance at what he had hidden inside the sleeve of the calculator D. felt too frightened to use it properly with Mr. Ward staring at him63. We can infer from this passage that _. A. Mr. Ward was working as a math teacher for a long time B. the student was asking the author for help when caught cheating in the exam C. Mr. Ward regretted not having let the student pass the exam D. the students were taking their final-term math examCPrinceton University LocationThe University is in Princeton, New Jersey. DA Batterys Worst Nightmare (噩梦) Portable electronics that can be carried about easily are only as good as their batteries and, lets face it, batteries arent very good, especially when compared with, say, petrol, which packs 100 times a batterys energy into an equal space. Thats why a large group of mechanical engineers (centered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with partners at other universities and companies) are hard at work in an effort to replace batteries with a tiny engine that runs on fuel. Imagine a battery-free life! When the fuel runs out in your laptop or mobile phone, you just fill up and go. The engineabout the size of a ten-cent coin - starts with a combustion chamber (燃烧室) that burns hydrogen (氢). Its tiny parts are etched onto silicon wafers (硅片) in the same manner that computer parts are imprinted onto integrated circuits (集成电路). The first engine is made up of five wafers. And since these wafers could be produced in much the same way as computer chips, they could probably be produced quite cheaply. But the devil in all this nice detail is efficiency (效率). Tiny engine parts dont always behave like their scaled-up parts of the first engine. Something between the parts can slow down the works, according to Columbia University professor Luc Frechette, one of the engines designers. Extreme heat from the combustion chamber is also a problem, often leaking to other parts of the engine. The scientists goal is to create an engine that will operate at 10 percent efficiencythat is, 10 times better than batteries operate. Freehette says that a complete system, with all parts of place and working, will be set up in the next couple of years, but commercial models arent like until at least the end of the next ten years. 67. According to the passage, the title suggests that _. A. batteries should be greatly improved B. petrol will be used instead of batteries C. the time of batteries will be gone forever D. pollution caused by batteries must be solved68. Whats the meaning of the underlined word devil in paragraph 3? A. problem B. advantage C. invention D. technique
