challengepart iii reading comprehension (30 marks)directions: read the following three passages., each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. for each of them there are four choices marked a, b,c and d. choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. amany people go to school for an education. they learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. school education is very important and useful. yet no one can learn everything that they want to know. the teachers job is to show his students how to learn. he teaches them how to read and how to think. so much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. it is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize(记住) some facts or a formula(公式). it is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in maths. but it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. great scientists, such as einstein, newton and galileo, didnt get anything from school, but they were all so successful. they invented so many things for mankind. the reason for their success is that they knew how to study. they read books that were not taught at school. they worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. they would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments. above all (最重要的是), they knew how to use their brains.bas computers become all the more popular in china, chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input chinese characters. but if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each chinese character when writing on paper. experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more. do you write by hand more or type more? in beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school.and computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer. all the students interviewed say they usually use a computer. its faster and easier to correct if using a computer. and thats why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. but when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear. “when im writing with a pen, i find i often cant remember how to write a character, though i feel im familiar with it.”“im not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”many students dont feel this is something to worry about. now that its more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite? many educators think differently. shi liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. but those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. all the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. and handwriting contains the writers emotion. through ones handwriting, people can get to know ones thinking and personality. beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”to encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in beijing have made writing classes compulsory (必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.c“whats in a name?” according to shakespeares romeo and juliet, there is not too much. “that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” but shakespeare may have been wrong. in most cultures, names matter a great deal.americans choose names for their children with care. parents usually think about the impression a name gives, not its meaning. most americans would consider a “jennifer” more attractive than a “bertha”, for example. the last name, or, surname, must also be considered when choosing a first and middle name. a name like lester chester hester would sound poetic, but odd. parents would avoid names that remind them of people they dont like. on the other hand, people might name their children after a respected elderly relative or even a famous person. the popularity of certain names can change with each new generation. names that were once common, like fanny or elmer, sound old-fashioned today. but other names-like john and david, mary and sarah-have stood the test of time and continue to be favorites.people in america dont always call their friends and relatives by their given names. instead, they often use nicknames. sometimes nicknames are short forms of a longer name. for instance, a girl named elizabeth may be called lisa, beth or betsy. as children grow up, they may decide for themselves which nickname they wish to be called. some people just go by the initials of their first and middle names, like b.j. or r.c. and of course, people may call their children or their sweethearts other special nicknames. often they have a “sweet” flavor, like honey or sugar.whats in a name? a word of significance. so if youre choosing an english name for yourself, take care to choose a good one. a made-up name could sound strange to native english speakers. and a translation of your chinese name may not make an appropriate name, either. but a good name can leave a positive and lasting impression. as an american politician once said, “in real life, unlike in shakespeare, the sweetness of the rose depends upon the name it bears.”part iv writing (35 marks)section a (10 marks)directions: read the following passage. fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. write no more than three words for each answer. it is easy for many people to catch a cold in the springtime or fall. it makes us wonder if scientists can send a man to the moon, why cant they find a cure for the common cold? the answer is easy. there are actually hundreds of kinds of cold viruses out there. you never know which one you will get, so there isnt a cure for each one.when a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. blood rushes to your nose and cause a block in it. you feel terrible because you cant breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. you also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells. you may feel very uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.different people do different things to deal with colds. in the united states and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to make themselves feel better. some people take hot baths and drink warm liquids. other people take medicine to stop various symptoms (症状) of colds.71 _how much you know about the common coldintroductionpeople catch a cold 72 in spring or fall.a
