lawyer. he was at the university of michigan school of medicine and i was at the university of maryland school of law. we encouraged each other. david proposed to me on may 15, 2011 in front of both of our families. it was amazing! i graduated from law school on that day david proposed and we got married the day after he graduated from medical school. david and i really didnt have much money to have a huge wedding, but we wanted the wedding of our dreams. we decided to plan everything ourselves. for decoration, i tried to create as many ideas as i could. we had a signature drink called “the huxtable”. we used mostly orchids as our flowers. we made our own seating chart (座位图) by downloading a free template(模板)and printing it out on a huge foam board. we could not afford a backdrop (背景幕) to go behind the bridal party, so we made one out of tissue and two enormous peg boards. it was awesome. many people wanted to buy our backdrop, but i gave it to our linen designer because he gave us crazy discounts. david designed our guestbook by using the apple iphone photobook application. it was awesome. he came up with the title “witness to love: david and susans wedding day” for the cover and then on the inside he stated this, in part, “bearing witness: thank you for being a witness to our covenant (盟约) with god as we commit ourselves to join as one” i was moved deeply by his beautiful words. we make our ceremony programs. we had a couple of gifts for guests. we gave them a handkerchief with our initials at the church, candy from the self-made candy bar display and stainless steel measuring spoons that said “love beyond measure”. we had a great wedding and the guests enjoyed themselves. by sharing my wedding story, i just want to tell you that you can have a wedding that you want within budget.50. why did the writer and david decide to plan everything themselves?a. because they had no time to find helpers.b. because they wanted to save money in this way.c. because they the guestbook?a. downb. curiousc. nervousd. touched53. the underlined word in the fourth paragraph most probably means_.a. something very importantb. some loving words they promise each otherc. the beginning capital letters of their names d. some witnesses wordsci prefer lynne trusss phraseology (措辞): i am a grammar “sticker”. and, like truss author of eats, shoots & leaves i have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid. now, truss and i disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. she thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be stuck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while i just think they deserve to be passed over for a job even if they are otherwise qualified for the position. everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, ifixit and dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. if job hopefuls cant distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin. of course, we write for a living. ifixit is the worlds largest online repair manual (说明书), and dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. so it makes sense that weve made a strong strike against grammar errors. but grammar is relevant for all companies. yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesnt make grammar unimportant. good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet. and for better or worse, people judge you if you cant tell the difference between “their” “there” and “theyre”. good grammar makes good business sense and not just when it comes to hiring writers. writing isnt in the official job description of most people in our office. still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers. grammar signifies more than just a persons ability to remember high school english. ive found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing like stocking shelves or labeling parts. it is the same with programmers. applicants who dont think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also arent important.54. the author agrees with lynne truss in that_. a. grammar mistakes cant be tolerated b. books on grammar makes people stupid c. people need to learn basic grammar d. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable55. whats the authors “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar? a. they should be left out for a job b. they have to correct their mistakes c. they arent qualified for their job d. they must be severely punished56. which of the following is true of ifixit and dozuki? a. only one of them has a compulsory grammar test. b. they are companies where one learns grammar. c. grammar is quite important for their existence. d. they depend on grammar for a living.57. what can we learn from the text? a. companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense. b. grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing. c. a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair. d. people who pay attention to writing may pay attention to other things.dpicture a wasteland of computer monitors and tvs, stretching as far as the eye can see. imagine towers of boxes, all of them filled with broken glass and old electronic devices. technology graveyards like this can be found in communities across the country. experts say that landfills and warehouses will overflow unless a plan for the disposal(清理)and reuse of electronics is put into place. “we cant put electronics and glass aside and tell ourselves well deal with them later,” lauren roman, managing director of transparent planet said. romans group works to improve the disposal of electronic waste. she says about 660 million pounds of tech trash is produced each year in the us. whats behind the tech trash pile-up? about ten years ago, major advances were made in computer and television technology. manufacturers began producing devices like flat-paneled lcds and plasma(等离子)screen monitors. these new products provide a clearer image and take up less space than older models. it goes without saying that consumers choose them rather than heavy, glass-based technologies. the new electronics are built with materials that are difficult to recycle. in addition, the new products have decreased the demand for recycled parts from the older monitors and screens. older, heavier computer monitors and tvs used glass-based components called crts. crts have a high lead (铅) content and can be environmentally risky if not recycled properly. if crushed and put in landfills, the lead from crts could seep into groundwater and rivers, harming the water supply. for many years, plants and recycling programs safely processed crts. the recycled crts were reused in the construction of new monitors. monitors being made today do not use glass tubes. “people are returning old-style tvs with crts, but no new ones are being made,” said linnel. this is creating an imbalance in the amount of glass being disposed of and recycled properly. many recycling companies hav
