This brings us to PDC Education Ltd, run by Rebecca Jordan and Kirsty Weir of Leeds, whose website offers teaching plans for teachers.Rosemarie Brady, finance manager of Rutlish School in Merton, southwest London, tells us that one teacher called Amanda Seyfried downloaded the “free” resources. “Unfortunately in very small print, they state that unless the free trial is cancelled, then you will be charged, “she says.A year has gone by and now theyve been sent a second bill for 500, just because they forgot to cancel the “free trial”.Merton Counciland its not the only onehas sent a warning to all its schools saying: “Only in the very ( easily missed ) small print of the terms and conditions is it explained that, after the 14day trial, schools will be automatically signed for a twoyear contract with the company.”“This will only be stopped if the teacher who requested the trial writes directly to PDC to cancel before the 14 days have expired (期满). The fee can be as much as hundreds of pounds, with the threat of debt recovery if they are not paid.”Among the online complaints is this one from a teacher: “How disappointed I am that they will not even consider seriously renegotiating the invoice (清单)”.Rebecca Jordan of PDC Education said: “The whole purpose behind the free trial is that we have confidence in our business. This free trial period gives teachers the chance to see what is on offer without having to commit to a payment.”Only a “very small number” of teachers have complained when they receive an invoice, she added. “Their only complaint is that they have not checked what they are signing up to but that is not our fault, the position is totally clear. The prices and the trial terms are clear to see on the online sign up page.”Its true the terms and conditions are on their website. But perhaps its unhelpful that they run to almost 3,000 words.56. In May 2008 Russia hosted the first formal BRIC foreign ministers meeting and in June 2009 it hosted the first BRIC heads of state summit in Yekaterinburg. A further summit was held in Brazil last year. But, although Brazil, Russia, India and China discussed how they could have greater influence and seek alternatives to the dollarthey did not reach any tangible agreement.Lin Yueqin, an economist with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that the summit topics basically overlap(重叠) with those of the G20 summit. “This indicates the BRICS are basically concerned about their position in this shifting world. Without such cooperation, these collective interests and positions cannot be expressed with stronger voices.”Fraser Cameron, director of the RussiaEurope Center, said Russia suffered badly from the global economic crisis in 2009 with GDP declining nearly 9 percent and a massive flight of capital out of the country. It registered a growth in GDP of 4.5 percent in 2010, but this was insufficient to handle many pressing social and economic problems.“Russia wants to polish up its image as a global power. So it wants to use the platform of BRICS to develop more economic and trade relationship to address these domestic challenges, “said Lin.Cameron also pointed out that Russia is quite different from other BRICS countries. Among the five BRICS countries, Russia has by far the highest per capita GDP, $12,000 in 2008, three times that of China. It has been forecast that Russia will be the only BRICS country to approach European per capita income levels by 2050. Most impressively, more than twothirds of Russians of university age are enrolled in university, compared with less than onefifth of the Chinese.“So it wants to use its global influence by better coordinating in BRICS and other international gatherings and this is good for fair and efficient global governance, “Lin added.64. Chinas per capita GDP was $3,000 in 2008, which was the lowest in the BRICSC. the BRIC have found a practical way to expand their influence and deal with the dollarD. through cooperation the BRICS can better defend their interests and have greater sayDKevlar is an invention that has saved many people from serious injury and death. Kevlar is a fibrous material with qualities that make it able to reject bullets. Added to clothing, the material protects security officers and soldiers across the world. The fibers form a protective barrier against gunfire. Bullets lose their shape when they strike Kevlar. Most threats to police and security officers come from handguns. They wear Kevlar vests to protect the upper body. Soldiers wear longer and thicker clothing protected with Kevlar.Kevlar might not have been invented had Stephanie Kwolek been able to seek a career in medicine. But she lacked the money for a medical education. She got a job with the DuPont chemical company in 1946. The company wanted to develop a new fiber. Stephanie Kwolek was part of a DuPont research group that worked on its development. Her experiments for the project were supposed to produce a clear something similar to a thick syrup. Instead, what Stephanie Kwolek produced was unexpected. It was a liquid that looked cloudy or milky. She said she might have thrown it out. But she decided to let it sit for a while. The process calls for the chemical to be pushed through the small holes of a special device. She remembers that a man called Jack Freeman operating the device at first refused to accept her material. He probably suspected it had solid particles that would block the holes. However, after a while he said he would try it. That person must have been surprised when the substance passed the test. It returned from the laboratory with more firmness than anything Stephanie Kwolek had made before.Getting Kevlar placed in protective clothing resulted mainly from the work of Lester Shubin and Nicholas Montanarelli. Mr. Shubin was educated in chemistry and Mr. Montanarelli was an army project director, trained in engineering and psychology. The two Americans were working at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
