IdontbelieveherstoryBylin1/22AsaChinese,IlivedthroughthatperiodoftimeinChina.IhavesimilarfamilyandeducationalbackgroundashersandsufferedduringCultureRevolutionasachild.IthinkherexperiencesinChinamostly,ifnotall,arefabricated,imagined,overlyexaggeratedordeliberatelymissleading.Ifonejustreadthemediareportsaboutherbook,he/shemaythinkthatmediamightjustpickthesensationalpartsofthebookandexaggeratedalittlebittohelphertosellthebook.No,itisnotthecase.Sheliedfromverybeginningtotheendinthebook,evenonthesmalldetailedevents.Iamamazedbyheraudacityoftellingsomanyblatantliesinsuchawellpublicizedbook.HerearesomeofthesocialandculturebackgroundofthatperiodoftimeinChina:1.IntraditionalConfuciusChineseculture,childrenwereconsideredaspropertyoftheirparents.Parentshadabsoluterightstotheirchildren,includingtherightstoabuseorselltheirkids.SinceMaoscommuniststookoverthepowerofChina,parentscantselltheirkidsanymore,butallotherrightswererespected,includingtherightsofadoptedparents(iftheadoptionswerelegalandpaperworkcomplete).CultureRevolutiondidntchangeanyofthat.DuringCultureRevolution,manygovernmentofficials,collegeteachersandprofessors,andintellectualswerepersecutedorlockedup.MyparentswereamongthosepeoplejustlikePingFusparents(ifherclaimsaretrue).Therewereaperiodoftimethatbothofmyparentswerelockedup.Myparentsarrangedmetobetakencarebyrelatives,familyfriendortoliveinaboardingchildcarecenter.Manyofmyrelativeschildrenandotherpeopleinsimilarsituationallhadsimilarexperiencesasme.Ihadneverheardofanykidsbeingtakenawaybyauthorities,itisjustagainstwayofthinking.Noone,includinggovernmentcouldtakepeopleschildrenaway.Thereisntsuchagencytodothatkindofjobandnofacilityforthatkindofchildren.ThatwouldcostmoneytooandChinawasverypooratthattime,childrenwereburdens.RedGuardwererevolutionists,theywerebusycriticizingandpersecutingpeoplelikemyparents(orPingsparents),orfightingeachother.Theydidntcareaboutlittlekids,anddidntinterestedintakingcareofchildren.Kidslikeuswereleftalone,althoughoftenwerediscriminatedinschoolsandinsocietyingeneral.AfterCultureRevolutionended,ManypeopleinChinawroteabouttheirexperiencesduringthattime.AllofthosestoriesregardingkidsthatIvereadofweremoreorlesssimilartomine,IhadneverheardoforreadaboutanycamplikewhatPingwroteinherbook,nothingclosetowhatshetold.Pingsstoryasachildjustsoundsimpossibleanddidnotaddupwithmanythingsinthattime.2.ThecultureonsexinChinahavebeencompletelydifferentfromtheWest.Chinawasextremelyconservativeonsexbefore80s.Youngpeoplewereveryignorantaboutsexandusuallydidnthaveanysexualexperiencesbeforetheymetthepersontheywouldmarry.Peopledonteventalkorjokeaboutsex.Rapecommittedbyyoungmenwasrareatthattime,especiallyincities.RapewasaveryseriouscrimeinChinaandpunishmentcouldbethedeathdecadesago.Rapingormolestationoflittlechildrenbyyoungpeoplewasevenrarer.Gangrapewasunheardof.Inmywhole20+yearlivinginChina,theonlygangrapeIhadheardofwerecommittedbyforeignersin80s.RedGuardwererevolutionists,notstreetthugsorrapists,theymightbeatorpersecutepeople,butnotrape.PingsclaimthatshewasGANGrapedbyyoungRedGuards(asreportedbymanymedia.Butinherbook,shewasrapebyabunchofyoungteenboysunderbroaddaylightatauniversitycampus)atage10becauseshesavedherlittlesisteragainsttheirwillisjustsounimaginable,soagainstChinassexualcultureandthinking,especiallyagainstRedGuardswayofthinkingandbehaving.3.Theschoolswerere-openin1968inmostoftheplaces,andwerefree,evenforkidswhoseparentsbeingpersecutedlikeme.NajingisoneofthebiggestcityinChina.IjustcouldntimaginethereasonthatPingcouldnotgotoschool.Besides,in70s,mostofhighschoolgraduateshadtogotopoorandruralcountryside,therewereverylimitedjobfortheminthecities.Factoryjobswereconsideredverygoodjobsandextremelyhardtogetin70s.Manypeoplehadtobribeorusetheirconnectiontolandtheirkidsafactoryjob.Andfactorydontacceptchildasemployeeorlaborunlesstheyfinishedtheirschooling.Schoolsmayorganizekidstoworkinfactoriesforseveralweekstogetexperiencesthough.Ididthatinmiddleschool.SoPingsstoryofworkinginthefactoryasachildandnotbeabletogotoschoolinoneofthebiggestandmostdevelopedcityinChinaisjustnotimpossibletobetrue.4.Chinascollegedidntadmitanyhighschoolgraduatesfrom1966to1976.ThefirstcollegeentranceexamafterCultureRevolutionwasheldin1977.Anypersonwhograduatedhighschoolbetween1966and1976couldtaketheexam.Thecompetitionforlimitedcollegeseatswasfierce.Inearly80s,whenonlycurrentlyyearhighschoolgraduatescouldtakethecollegeentranceexam,only4%couldgetintocollege.Soyoucanimaginehowcompetitivetogetintocollegeinyear77.Thestudymaterialsandbookswereverylimitedatthattime.UnparentedandunschooledPingFucouldgetintocollegein1977,shemustbeasupperhuman.5.AllcollegestudentsinChinahadtotake4yearsofEnglishclasses.ThesupperhumanPingFucouldonlyspeakthreephrasesofEnglishwhenshecametotheUS,oneyearaftergraduatingfromcollege:thankyou,hello,andhelp.Givemeabreak.6.ChinasOneChildpolicyofficiallystartedinlateryearof1980.Atthatyear,Pingshouldbeacollegejunior.Forapersongrewupincitytothinkofwritinghercollegesenioryeargraduationthesisaboutkillingofbabygirlsinruralcountrysidebeca
