Its the way that many cities and villages celebrate their main festivals. A good festival is not good if there is not a bullfight. The place where a bullfight is celebrated is always a round arena. The most important characteristic of the bullfight is that a bullfighter has to fight against a bull until he kills it with a sword (剑). A bullfight has three parts. First, the bullfighter fights with a cape (披巾). When the bull, which is very strong, enters the arena, the bullfighter tries to make the bull tired in order to make it lose strength. Second, the bullfighters assistant rides a horse up to the bull and tries to put a sharp stick into the bulls neck. Third, the bullfighter uses a stick with a red cloth attached to fight against the bull. This is a very difficult art. Its in this part that the bullfighter has to perform at his best because this is when people will judge if he is a good or bad fighter. This part is over when he kills the bull with a sharp sword. He is considered a good bullfighter if he can kill the bull the first time he tries to. Interestingly, a popular Sevillana dance is like a bullfight. The graceful movements of this dance show what a bullfighter does to a bull. In bullfighting, the bullfighter fights against the bull. In the Sevillana dance, the man (the male dancer) fights against the woman (the female dancer). The man imitates the art of the bullfighter and uses the different poses that the bullfighter uses to fight aganist the bull. 56. British people, especially those with children, love to have a picnic whenever the weather is good enough. Its a great way to spend a sunny afternoon. Even in the centre of London, on a sunny day, the parks are full of office workers eating their lunch outside on the grass. That might be a pretty basic picnic a shop-bought sandwich and a bottle of water. But if people are planning a picnic on a beach or at a park, they would probably take a bag with a whole variety of home-made sandwiches, snacks, cakes, fruit and soft drinks. They might have a picnic rug to sit on, and paper plates and cups. Another item that is useful is a Thermos (保温瓶) which keeps hot drinks like tea or coffee hot. University students enjoy having picnics, and usually take along some kind of sports equipment, such as a Frisbee (飞盘) or a ball in order to burn off some energy after lunch. British student picnics usually involve drinking beer or wine too! For small children the idea of a teddy bear picnic is popular each child brings their teddy bear along to enjoy the fun as well. Some people love to have a very enjoyable picnic, and really try their best to make it an occasion. For a very luxurious picnic youd need a proper picnic basket to hold the food together with china dishes and plates, metal knives and forks and real wine glasses. A picnic could be a romantic occasion, but only if its in a quiet attractive place, not in a busy park with lots of children playing nearby! In that case there might be champagne (香槟酒) or wine to drink, and delicious picnic food, either home-made, or bought from a local food store. Of course, you can never rely on the British summer weather, so taking an umbrella along might be a good idea just in case! 60. From his early days in the television show , Hanks went on to win Oscars for two completely different roles. First, he won Best Actor for his role in the 1993s , in which he played Andrew Beckett, a lawyer that was fired from his law firm after they found him ill with AIDS. For his role as Andrew Beckett, Hanks lost a lot of weight to show successfully the worsening physical condition of the lawyer. In 1994, Hanks brought home a second statue for his performance of the title character in , a friendly Southerner with questionable intelligence who has good fortune to be present at a number of important historical events. In , Hanks developed a slow way of speaking that perfectly showed Gumps slow mental processes and childish behavior. Not satisfied with making history, Hanks followed up the two wins with an Oscar-worthy performance, which allowed him to bring a life long dream close to reality, playing astronaut Jim Lowell in (1995). Tom Hanks was born in Concord, California on July 9, 1956. When he was only five years old, his parents divorced. Hanks and his elder brothers and sisters lived with their father, while the youngest child stayed with their mother. At an early age Hanks learned that people liked him when he made them laugh, so he became a clown (丑角). In 1978 he married Samantha Lewes, with whom he had two children, son Colin and daughter Elizabeth. They divorced in 1985. In 1985, while filming , Hanks met Rita Wilson and they were married in 1988. Hanks and Wilson had two sons, Chester and Truman. While accepting the Academy Award for in 1994, Hanks brought tears to many eyes with his acknowledgement of their love and respect for each other. 64. Why was Andrew Beckett fired from his law firm in ? A. Because he broke the laws of the firm. B. Because he was found ill with AIDS.C. Because he was no longer fit for his job.D. Because he disliked his job.65. What do people think of Hanks in the film ?A. He lost too much weight.B. He acted as a clown.C. His acting is very convincing.D. He acted as an astronaut. 66. In which of the films did Hanks play the role of an astronaut?A. .B. . C. .D. 67. In which of the following films did Hanks win an Oscar for Best Actor?A. .B. . C. .D. . I went to a movie theater with my roommate the other day. His hobby is seeing movies. He watches movies more than once a week. In our room, he has put a movie actress poster on the wall. He is crazy about movies. There are no bus services in this town, and I seldom get away from the campus. I always spend my time reading books in the library, swimming in the pool, or jogging, so I was really glad when he said he would take me to the movie. The movie we saw was called . It showed the love between a father and his children during the time of the American War of Independence. The father hated the British army and took revenge (报复) for his sons death. Actually, it is a war story based on history, but the story was created by a writer for entertainment. The movie was enjoyable because sometimes it made us laugh, and other times it made us cry. As an entertainment it was a successful movie. But I must say that a serious and true story should not be used for entertainment. Americans and Japanese behave differently when they see a movie. I can give all my attention to a movie in America, but I cant be there because of the audience. They laugh loudly when an actor tells a joke and they clap their hands when the hero kills the enemy. It is amazing to me that they express their emotions so openly. If I did that in a public place in Japan, most people would look down their nose at me or complain about the noise, and the person beside me might say, “Could you please be silent?” There seems to be a cultural difference between the US and Japan. It is said that Americans always express their emotions and opinions and that the Japanese always try to hide theirs. Im glad I can observe such a difference as I feel that I am experiencing a real thing while staying in the US.68. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?A. He likes seeing movies.B. He usually goes out in a taxi.C. He seldom goes out of the school.D. He wants to get away from the campus. 69. The author liked the film EXCEPT that _.A. it was a war story based on history B. it was about a father and his childrenC. sometimes it made them cryD. it was used for entertainment70. Uneasy.Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less work. First, be sure that you understand what you have to do. Write it down in your notebook or day planner if you need to, and dont be afraid to ask questions about whats expected. Its much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night! If you want, you can also ask how long the particular homework assignment should take to be completed so you can plan your time. Second, use any extra time you have in school to work on your homework. Many schools have study halls that are specifically designed to allow students to study or get homework done. Its tempting to spend time with friends during study periods or after-class time, but the more work you can get done in school, the less youll have to do that night. Third, consider how soon you can finish your homework. If you dont finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then take care of your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If its a heavy homework day and it seems that youve got an assignment in every subject but PE, youll need to devote more time to homework. Its a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule, especially if you are taking part in sports or activities or doing an after-school job.72. What does the underlined word “tempting” in paragraph 3 mean?A. Interesting.B. Attractive.C. Addictive.D. Unpleasant. 73. What can we learn about the students from the last paragraph?A. Usually it takes the students more than 3 hours to do their homework.B. Most students can finish their homework at school.C. They neednt finish their homework if there is too much.D.
