best answer and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet 精致服务 卓越品质精致服务 卓越品质 模拟试题三 第5页 共14页 Passage One During a state of deep relaxation several physiological changes take place in the body the body s oxygen consumption is reduced the heart beat decreases muscle tension and sweating ease and there is decreased sympathetic 交感的 nervous system activity This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself but it has a calming effect on the consciousness How to achieve this state of relaxation however is a matter of opinion and in some medical circles a matter of controversy 争议 A recent report by Dr David Holmes of the university of Kansas in the journal American psychologist said that simply sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation 冥想 does Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree These experts believe that more structured techniques such as meditation lead to a condition of deep relaxation The debate goes on But one thing appears to be clear the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there One day one method may work best on another day an alternative method may be more appropriate Once you are aware of all the methods you can find the one that works best to you Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation autoanalysis 自我心理分析 and progressive muscle relaxation response more than just sitting quietly in a chair they have the added benefit of structure and discipline and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals 21 According to the passage which of the following statements is not true when a person is in a state of deep relaxation A The body takes in less oxygen B The heart beats less frequently C Muscles become tense and the body sweats easily D The consciousness becomes more or less calmed 22 People seem to agree that A sitting in an armchair benefits a person as meditation does B structured relaxation techniques are more beneficial for a person C to achieve a state of deep relaxation is possible through various means D what people are all struggling for is a state of deep relaxation 23 In the third paragraph the phrase getting there means A arriving at one s destination B getting what one wants most C finding out a suitable relaxation technique 精致服务 卓越品质精致服务 卓越品质 模拟试题三 第6页 共14页 D reaching a state of deep relaxation 24 As far as relaxation is concerned the author indicates that A aims are more important than means B means are more important than aims C more and more people are interested in relaxation techniques D some relaxation techniques are better than others Passage Two The economic costs of noise to society are several Airports are currently operating at less than capacity because of noise regulations which restrict their hours of operation For instance at Washington s national airport no jet traffic is allowed from 11 pm to 7 am Other airports restrict the use of certain runways One estimate is that noise restrictions reduce possible airport use by 20 percent The profitable cargo trade is especially affected by night restrictions In the case of airports jet engines may be modified to reduce their noise level or insulation 隔音 from air traffic noise may be provided by the purchase of land around airports or the insulation of buildings one estimate is that 5 7 billion would be required to equip all existing jet engines with noise control devices However considering the current state of the art even taking this step will not reduce noise levels at all points to acceptable values Some combination of methods is probably necessary If all aircraft were made quieter by existing methods there would be a number of economic benefits An increase in airport capacity would occur Property values near airports might rise Transportation costs to and from airports could be reduced since the airports now could be located closer to population centers Much research still needs to be done on the economic aspects of noise reduction and noise effects Although some of the effects of noise pollution are known more must be discovered about its effects on health productivity property values and the quality of life Furthermore the cost of noise pollution to the economy as a whole needs to be investigated The public must be alerted to the dangers and economic costs of noise pollution so that people may make intelligent choices and exert appropriate pressures 25 There is no jet traffic at Washington s national airport from 11 pm to 7 am because A it is extremely dangerous to fly in the dark B noise regulations restrict the hours of airport operation C some of its runways are not in good condition D cargo planes produce disturbing noises 精致服务 卓越品质精致服务 卓越品质 模拟试题三 第7页 共14页 26 The current state of the art in para 2 means A a developed sense of beauty B the volumes of present day traffic C the most recently developed technology D insulation of air traffic noise 27 Noise reduction could lead to A increased airport capacity B lower property values C effective modification of existing jet engines D more transportation costs to and from airports 28 What is not mentioned in the passage A Psychological strain B Handling capacity of cargo C Measures for noise reduction D Public pressures Passage Three Frankly I think you re boring Why do we seldom hear people speak so honestly Unless you want to end a relationship you don t tell another person what you think of her or him like this Failing to be impressed by a friend s collection of stamps yawning when a golfer tells you about that great shut he made on the 14th hole or falling asleep when friends show pictures from their last trip to Sault Ste Marie are all things that educated people try not to do This is what manners are about acting in a civilized way to avoid misunderstanding friction and conflict There are no laws enforcing respect Yet we cannot interact with others without some rules of behavior rules that are set by some form of social consensus These guidelines represent what a majority of people consider acceptable and what they consider unacceptable Rude people are those whose behavior shows little respect for the rules that the majority follow For instance because they talk at home while the television is on many people think they can talk at movies as well They are not even aware that this habit will bother the other members of the audience Restaurants have smoking and non smoking sections and most smokers are polite enough to ask Do you mind if I smoke before lighting up Restaurants should also have cellular phone and no cellular phone sections A new class of rude people has been born the look at me phone users whose boring conversations are just as dangerous to our mental health as smoke is to our lungs Sometimes it is better to remain unknown than to make pimple hate you There are many children and adolescents whose behavior is generally unacceptable They swear no matter who is around them they listen to their Walkmans while the teacher is talking to them 精致服务 卓越品质精致服务 卓越品质 模拟试题三 第8页 共14页 Indifferent parents who refuse to discipline their children are not helping them Kids who have no idea what being polite means will pay the price sooner or later When they join the work force their employers and associates alike will soon realize that the behavior of these rude young people is closer to that of animals than civilized individuals When they lose a few contracts because they talk with their mouth full or when they say Bob to someone who should be Mr Johnson these grown up kids because of their ignorance will never understand why others are getting ahead and they are not Every little bit of kindness helps With manners the best rule is the one that works It is easier to look and sound attractive when we are nice to other people Being polite and showing respect can give us an edge Why do we need an edge Success in life often starts with a job we like and since getting a job is usually based on making the right impression it is always a good idea to be kind and polite 29 Which of the following is regarded as a polite manner A Failing to say anything in praise of your friend s collection of stamps B Yawning when a sportsman tells you about his recent record C Falling asleep when friends show you re their favorable pictures D Giving up smoking in a public place 30 Which of the following statements is not true A Rules of behavior in a society are followed by polite people B Acceptable guidelines are usually agreed on by most people in the society C Rude people show some respect for social rules D Talking at movies bothers the others in the audience 31 To be polite you should A talk loudly in a cinema B listen to a walkman in class C ask permission before smoking D talk with your month full 32 The word discipline in para 4 can be replaced by A train and control B punish C rule D teach 33 The word edge in the last paragraph means A a border B the sharp blade of a knife C quality D advantage Passage Four When we think of the intelligent members of the animal kingdom the creatures that spring immediately to mind are apes and monkeys But in fact the social lives of some members of the insect kingdom are sufficiently complex to suggest more than a hint of intelligence Among these the world 精致服务 卓越品质精致服务 卓越品质 模拟试题三 第9页 共14页 of the ant has come in for considerable scrutiny lately and the idea that ants demonstrate sparks of cognition has certainly not been rejected by those involved in these investigations Ants store food repel attackers and use chemical signals to contact one another in case of attack Such chemical communication can be compared to the human use of visual and auditory channels to arouse and propagate moods and attitudes The biologist Lewis Thomas wrote Ants are so much like human beings as to be an embarrassment They farm fungi raise aphids as livestock launch armies to war use chemical sprays to alarm and confuse enemies capture slaves engage in child labour exchange information ceaselessly They do everything but watch television However in ants there is no cultural transmission everything must be encoded in the genes whereas in humans the opposite is true Only basic instincts are carried in the genes of newborn baby other skills being learned from others in the community as the child grows up It may seem that this cultural continuity gives us a huge advantage over ants They have never mastered fire nor progressed Their fungus farming and aphid herding crafts are sophisticated when compared to the agricultural skills of humans five thousand years ago but have been totally overtaken by modern human agribusiness Or have they The farming methods of ants are at least sustainable They do not ruin environments or use enormous amounts of energy Moreover recent evidence suggests that the crop farming of ants may be more sophisticated and adaptable than was thought Ants were farmers fifty million years before humans were Ants can t digest the cellulose in leaves but some fungi can The ants therefore cultivate these fungi in their nests bringing them leaves to feed on and then use them as a source of food Farmer ants secrete antibiotics to control other fungi that might act as weeds and spread waste to fertilise the crop It was once thought that the fungus that ants cultivate was a single type that they had propagated essentially changed from the distan
