Book VIII Unit 1 A land of diversityPeriod 1 Warming-up and Reading南宁一中 黄庆芬Analysis of the teaching materials (教材分析)This unit explores two states in the USA in order to demonstrate the huge diversity of races and cultures in America. The main reason for this diversity is the different patterns of settlement in different parts of the country and this unit looks at the history of settlement of California. One of proposes of the unit is to help students recognize that it is not possible to generalize about America, Americans or the American way of life.Analysis of the students(学情分析)The students may get interested in the history, the culture and current life of America as they are learning English and America has quite a big influence on different aspects of the world like economy, education, science and technology. However, their knowledge about this country and the state - California is still limited, especially its history of settlement.Teaching objectives (教学目标)At the end of the period, the students will be able to.1. Language knowledge(知识目标)learn the following words and expressions: illustrate, indicate, swap, slip, hire, insert, reactby means of, occur to, team up with, mark out, take in, a great manylearn the following sentence structures:1. Exactly when the first people arrived in what we now know as California, no one really knows. 2. However, in 1846 the United States declared war on Mexico and after it lost the war, Mexico had to give California to the United States. 3. Although Chinese immigrants began to arrive during the Gold Rush Period, it was the building of the railway from the west to the east coast that brought even larger numbers to California in the 1860s. 4Now that you have read the text, you know a lot more about the pictures on pages 1-3.2. Language skills(能力目标)students understand the texts forms and contents and learn about the history of settlement in California.3. Emotionalcultivation(情感目标)know more about the history of settlement in California, especially the settlement of Chinese their and lead them to discuss why Chinese people settled there.4. Learningstrategies(策略目标)read for the forms,read to transfer information,collect the details of the text and retell it and read to underline and write down all the useful collocations.Teaching key points (教学重点)1.
