文档简介

The Shaolin Temple The Shaolin Temple is located in the beautiful Songshan Mountainone of the Five Sacred Mountains in China. It was built in 495A.D. for an Indian monk, Bahdra, who transmitted his doctrines here. Later another Indian monk, Bodhi Dharma, drew a large number of followers, which was the beginning of Chinese Zen Buddhism. In one word, the Shaolin Temple is the birthplace of Zen Buddhism as well as the cradle of Chinese martial arts.Today well not only visit the mysterious Shaolin Temple, but also realize the essence of Shaolin Kungfu. Now we are approaching the Front Gate Hall, it is just like the gate of our house. Please take a look at the Laughing Buddha, who always keeps a big smile on the face. Guys, can you guess why he is so happy? Because he is welcoming your arrival! He is so funny and has extremely big ears and naked belly. Theres also a couplet about him: A huge belly holding what is hard to hold, an amiable face laughing at what is laughable” which means everyone should keep a good attitude towards life.Just now we have visited the Heavenly King Hall, this way, please! The Mahavira Hall is right before your eyes. We can see that there are three Buddhas in the hall: Sakyamuni in the middle, Pharmacist Buddha on his left and Amitabha Buddha on his right. Different from other Buddhist monasteries, there are Bodhi Dharma and Kimnara on both sides of the three Buddhas in the hall.Look, there is also a pair of Chinese unicorns by two pillars in the hall. All of these show that Zen is Buddhism with Chinese characteristics. Guys, do you know a Chinese saying “Cutting an arm for true Buddhist doctrines”? If not, it doesnt matter, cause I am telling you now. The story happened in front of us-the Standing-in-snow pavilion. The Songshan Mountainthe Front Gate Hall the Laughing Buddha The Heavenly King HallThe Mahavira HallAfter Bodhi Dharma arrived at the Shaolin Temple, a Chinese monk Shenguang followed his step and carefully looked after him day after day, year after year. One snowy night, Shenguang stood outside the Pavilion till the heavy snow submerged his knees. The next morning, when Bodhi Dharma saw him standing in thick snow, he asked him, “Why are you standing here?” Shengguan replied “I really wish you take me as your follower”. “Unless the red snowflakes fall from the heaven” Bodhi Dharma replied. Out of Bodhidharmas expectation, Shenguang chopped off his left arm and the red blood dyed the white snow. Bodhi Dharma was deeply moved by Shenguangs sincerity and loyalty and finally accepted him as a disciple and sent him a buddhist name “Huike”. And later, the hall was also called “the Standingin-snow-pavilion Hall” to commemorate Huikes “Cutting an arm for true Buddhist doctrines” What have you learnt from Huike? Yes, the loyalty and sincerity in learning. “the Standingin-snow-pavilion Hall”Here we are in the Pilu Hall. In China, we have a widespread saying: “All martial arts come from Shaolin”. Please take a look at the ground, there are 48 foot pits left by the martial monks when they were exercising Shaolin Kungfu. Do you know that the movie Shaolin Temple starred by Jet Lee in 1982? This film aroused great interest in martial arts among the young and the old at home and abroad. Shaolin Kungfu is one of the most influential types of Chinese martial art. The distinct characteristic of it is that the practician works on one straight line with quick, powerful and flexible movements. As a famous saying goes: “all work and no play makes Jake a dull boy”, so when you feel tired after long time study, you can practice Wushu, which can get you relaxed and make you stronger. We are going to see a Wushu show in the afternoon and you can watch closely how they move
