2014高考英语阅读理解基础训练精品题(115)及答案passage eight(the development of cities) mass transportation revised the social and economic fabric of the american city in three fundamental ways. it catalyzed physical expansion, it sorted out people and land uses, and it accelerated the inherent instability of urban life. by opening vast areas of unoccupied land for residential expansion, the omnibuses, horse railways, commuter trains, and electric trolleys pulled settled regions outward two to four times more distant form city centers than they were in the premodern era. in 1850, for example, the borders of boston lay scarcely two miles from the old business district; by the turn of the century the radius extended ten miles. now those who could afford it could live far removed from the old city center and still commute there for work, shopping, and entertainment. the new accessibility of land around the periphery of almost every major city sparked an explosion of real estate development and fueled what we now know as urban sprawl. between 1890 and 1920, for example, some 250,000 new residential lots were recorded within the borders of chicago, most of them located in outlying areas. over the same period, another 550,000 were plotted outside the city limits but within the metropolitan area. anxious to take advantage of the possibilities of commuting, real estate developers added 800,000 potential building sites to the chicago region in just thirty years lots that could have housed five to six million people. of course, many were never occupied; there was always a huge surplus of subdivided, but vacant, land around chicago and other cities. these excesses underscore a feature of residential expansion related to the growth of mass transportation: urban sprawl was essentially unplanned. it was carried out by thousands of small investors who paid little heed to coordinated land use or to future land users. those who purchased and prepared land for residential purposes, particularly land near or outside city borders where transit lines and middle-class inhabitants were anticipated, did so to create demand as much as to respond to it. chicago is a prime example of this process. real estate subdivision there proceeded much faster than population growth.1.with which of the following subjects is the passage mainly concerned?a types of mass transportation.instability of urban life.c how supply and demand determine land use.d the effect of mass transportation on urban expansion.2.why does the author mention both boston and chicago?a to demonstrate positive and negative effects of growth.to exemplify cities with and without mass transportation.c to show mass transportation changed many cities.d to contrast their rate of growth.3.according to the passage, what was one disadvantage of residential expansion?a it was expensive.it happened too slowly.c it was unplanned.d it created a demand for public transportation.4.the author mentions chicago in the second paragraph as an example of a city,a that is large.that is used as a model for land development.c where the development of land exceeded population growth.d with an excellent mass transportation system.vocabulary1.revise 改变2.fabric 结构3.catalyze 催化,加速4.sort out 把分门别类,拣选5.omnibus 公共汽车/马车6.trolley (美)有轨电车,(英)无轨电车7.periphery 周围,边缘8.sprawl 建筑物无计划延伸,蔓延,四面八方散开9.lot 小片土地10.underscore 强调,在下面划横线11.transit lines 运输线路12.subdivision 公共交通运输对城市扩展的影响。 a. a. a. 4.c(第二段中以芝加哥城市例子说明)土地开发超过人口增长速度。 a. b. aa higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as in english ,and the general principles apply to any language .naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. you would expect to read a newspaper, for example ,much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gained will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with .the reading passages which follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. they are all about five hundred words long .they are about topics of general interest which do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel .if you read this kind of english, with understanding at four hundred words per minute, you might skim through a newspaper at perhaps 650700, while with a difficult textbook you might drop to two hundred or two hundred and fifty.perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native english-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved .tests in minnesota, u.s.a., for example, have shown that students without special training can read english of average difficulty, for example, tolstoys war and peace in translation, at speeds of between 240250 words per minute with about seventy percent comprehension. students in minnesota claim that after twelve half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around five hundred words per minute.1. according to the passage, the purpose of effective reading with higher speed is most likely to help you _. aonly in your reading of a physics my tests. sometimes i studied for weeks before a test. yet i would go in to take the test, only to find i could not answer the questions correctly. i would blank out because of nervousness and fear. i couldnt think of the answer. my low grades on the tests did not show what i knew to the teacher. another student in microbiology had similar experiences. he said, my first chemistry test was very difficult. then, on the second test, i sat down to take it, but i was so nervous that i was shaking. my hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. i knew the material and i knew the answers. yet i couldnt even write them down!these two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. because a student worries and he is uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. the student cant write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. recently, test anxiety has been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.special university counseling courses try to help students. in these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. at some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. if the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their tension. these courses teach students how to relax their bodies. students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. by controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease. learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.an expert at the university of california explains. with almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking our program. most of them experience better control during their tests. almost all have some improvement. with some, the improvement is very great. 6. to “blank out” is probably_.a
