湖南省汝城二中2014届高考英语一轮复习阅读训练 (55)1.how to improve my life? many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. theyll say, this is my fate, my destiny. i cannot change it.of course not! you dont have to suffer needlessly. your destiny depends on you, not on any other external factors.i know someone who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. guess what her lifestyle is? she wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches tv, then goes to sleep. next day, the same routine cycle follows.huh! is this what she calls doing her best? she believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that god has intended for her to live; that her luck can only change if god wills it. of course god wants us to be happy and live our life to the fullest, but we have to do our share of exerting (运用) the effort to live the life of our dreams.remember that you harvest what you sow. you just dont sit around and wait for a million dollars to fall from the sky. you have to get off the couch, get your eyes off the tv screen, get your hands off the phone. dont expect your luck to change unless you do something about it. if something goes wrong, dont just regard it as a temporary setback; but use it as feedback. learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. its not enough to think positively; you also have to act positively.if someones life is in the trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? of course not! you get to do anything you can to save the person. so it is with your own life. it is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. in other words, dont just stand (or sit) there, do something to improve your life.64. according to the woman mentioned in para.3, her life _. a. doesnt need improving b. couldnt be improvedc. will be better some day d. will be worse in the future 65. which of the following statements is the authors opinion?a. your luck can be changed by your efforts.b. your temporary problem is not discouraging.c. you can only achieve success when god wills it. d. you should treat yourself in the way you treat friends.66. in para.5, the author emphasized the importance of _.a. intention to succeed b. positive thinking c. hope for the best d. positive action67. the text is mainly written to advise you to _. a. understand yourself b. improve your life c. believe in yourself d. change your normal way2.generations of americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is essential to ones life. eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip.but for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. so in spite of all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didnt have breakfast increased by 33%from 8.8 million to 11.7 millionaccording to the chicago-based market research corporation of america.for those who dislike eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. several studies in the last few years have shown that, for grown-ups especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “going without breakfast does not affect work,” said arnold e. bender, former professor of nutrition at queen elizabeth college in london, “nor does giving people breakfast improve work.” scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better work is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not grown-ups. “the literature,” says one researcher, dr earnest polite at the university of texas, “is poor.” 60. the main idea of the passage is that _.a. breakfast has nothing to do with peoples healthb. a good breakfast used to be important to usc. breakfast is not as important to us as gasoline to a card. breakfast is not as important as we thought before61. for those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that _.a. several studies have been done in the past few years b. grown-ups have especially made studies in this fieldc. the omission of breakfast has little effect on ones workd. eating little in the morning is good for health62. the underlined part “nor does giving people breakfast improve work” means _.a. people without breakfast can improve their workb. not giving people breakfast improves workc. having breakfast does not improve work, eitherd. people having breakfast do improve their work, too 63. what is implied but not stated by the author is that _.a. breakfast does not affect work b. dr polite works at an institution of lower learningc. professor bender once taught college courses in nutrition in londond. not eating breakfast might affect the health of children3. america is a mobile society. friendships between americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. neither side feels hurt by this. both may exchange christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. if the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. this can be quite difficult for us chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families. americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. they will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily. another difficult point for us chinese to understand americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they dont show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. this is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. we may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. the americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their routine. they will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. and they expect that we will phone them from there. once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. we will find ourselves treated hospitably. for the americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. so accept their hospitality at home.56. which of the following statements is true according to the passage?a. friendships between americans usually extend deeply into their families.b. friendships between americans usually last for all their lives.c. americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.d. americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.57. from the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in america to visit an american friend, we will probably be _.a. warmly welcomed at the airport b. treated hospitably at his homec. offered a ride to his home d. treated to dinner in a restaurant58. the underlined words “generous with our time” in paragraph 3 probably mean _ .a. willing to spend time b. serious with time c. careful with time d. strict with time59. a suitable title for this passage would probably be “_”.a. friendships between chinese b. friendships between americansc. americans and chineses views of friendships d. americans hospitality4.steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the u.s. education system. remarkably, he could read, yet, resist another look at the lovely woman.miss whites face was in total shock! she glanced up at steve, then down, then up. suddenly, her face broke into a radiant smile. the smartest boy in the seventh grade had just passed his first test!from that moment nothing was the same for steve. life at home remained the same, but life still changed. he discovered that not only could he learn, but he was good at it! he discovered that he could understand and retain knowledge, and that he could translate the things he learned into his own life. steve began to excel! and he continued this course throughout his school life.after high-school steve enlisted in the navy, and he had a successful military career. during that time, he met the love of his life, he raised a family, and he graduated from college magna cum laude. during his naval career, he inspired many young people, who without him, might not have believed in themselves. steve began a second career after the navy, and he continues to inspire others, as an adjunct professor(副教授) in a nearby college。miss white left a great legacy. she saved one boy who has changed many lives. i know, because i am the love of his life.you see, its simple, really. a change took place within the heart of one boy, all because of one teacher, who cared.73. what does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph mean?a. steve no middle ground when it comes to cats. people either love them or hate them. these feelings are not new either. all through history, cats have been worshiped or hated. a study of ancient writings and evidence found in tombs indicates that for the past 5,000 years, cats have been kept as pets in china, arabia, egypt, and india. however, this isnt very long compared to dogs, which have been domesticated for 50,000 years. still, while the period in which cats have been domesticated may be quite short, it has definitely had its high and low points.cats were at their highest position of domesticated life in ancient egypt. there were more cats living in egypt during the time of the pharaohs than in any other place in the world since that time. this high number of cats was probably due to the laws protecting them. cats were associated with the moon goddess, bast, so the egyptians worshiped them as holy animals. if anyone was caught killing a cat, the person could be put to death. families in egypt also mourned the death of a cat and had the body of the dead cat wrapped in cloth before it was finally laid to rest. this respect for cats carried over to the roman empire where cats were the only animals allowed into temples. this fact was probably due to the ability of cats to keep the temples free of mice and rats. with the coming of the dark ages in europe, the place of cats in society took a turn for the empire, christians began to associate cats with pegan (异教徒) beliefs. cats had a reputation as helpers of witches. when a person was accused of being a witch, a cat would often be put on trial with the person. the cat would be tortured(拷打) to try and make the person tell the truth, and usually the cat and the person would end up being burned in a bonfire or drowned. bonfires of collected cats were not uncommon during this time.the days of hunting witches have ended, but other myths about cats still hold out. for a while, people in some places used to bury live cats under new buildings for good luck. as well, many people today continue to believe that black cats bring bad luck. if a black cat walks in front of a person, that person must take extra care in the near future to watch out for dangerous situations. regardless of superstition(迷信), cats remain a popular pet today. some cat experts believe that a cat never truly be domesticated because it may turn wild and run away at any time. however, this claim has not put people off keeping cats in their homes. a third of homes in the united states have cats, and one out of every three of these homes keeps both a dog and a cat. especially in large cities, many people in small apartments have found that cats make much better pets than dogs.cats may not be worshiped as gods any more, but there are people who seem to think of their cat as their children. these cat owners will do almost anything to keep their pets healthy and happy. for those cat owners who have always wondered what their pets are trying to tell them, a japanese company may have come up with the perfect invention. in 2003, the takara company announced the meowlingual, a cat translation device. the meowlingual uses a microphone, display, and cat voice analyzer to analyze a cats meows to determine which of 200 phrases a cat is trying to say.according to a company spokesperson, “ cat owners all over the world have been telling takara, we want a cat translator!” now, the company “is making their dream come true by bringing in a new era of communication between cat lovers and their pets.”69. which of these is not
