The ox is a representative of the farming culture of China. In the farming economy (经济), oxen are the major animals pulling plows (犁).Of course, the good of oxen is not limited to plowing. In fact, they are seen as boats on land for their ability to carry loads. Besides, the whole body of an ox is full of treasures. Their meat and milk are food full of nutrition, and their skin can be used to make clothes and shoes. With all these qualities, oxen are regarded as generous creatures. In the past, oxen played an important role in the spiritual(精神的) life of the Chinese. Even today, oxen still play a special part in some folk activities. For example, some people who 1ive in southwest China will cook cattle bone soup and share it among family members when holding the ceremony for children who reach 13. They believe that the cattle bone soup represents the blood relationship among family members. In order to express their love for oxen, people in some other areas will run to shake off diseases on the 16th day of the first month by the lunar calendar (农历), and during their run they will take their oxen along, which shows they regard the creature as human.Because of the contribution of oxen in their lives, the Chinese people are very grateful to the animal. In addition, the use of oxen in ceremonies and the thanks people owe to oxen help to develop various traditional customs, which becomes an important part of the folk culture of the Chinese nation.42. From the third paragraph, we know that _A. oxen are no more important today than in the pastB. ceremonies are held when people cook cattle bone soupC. oxen are treated as human in some areas of ChinaD. people run with oxen to shake off diseases every month43. Which of the following helps to develop traditional customs?A. The special role of oxen in plowing.B. Peoples respect and love for oxen.C. The practical value of an oxs body.D. The contribution of oxen to the economy.44. Why does the author write the text?A. To stress the importance of oxen in farming.B. To introduce the Chinese folk culture.C. To describe how to celebrate the Year of Ox.D. To explain how to develop agriculture with oxen.BWhen people advise your children to “get an education”, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to give manpower for your society.Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you are occupationally(职业上) dead, unless your name happens to be George Washington or Thomas Edison and you can successfully stop study in primary schools.Get a college degree, if possible. With a BA, you should start to find a job. You have to put on the brakes now. If you do go for a masters degree, make sure it is an MBA and only from a first-class university. Otherwise, the famous law of diminishing(报酬递减率)begins to work.Do you know, for example, that long-distance truck drivers make more money a year than full professors? Yes, each driver was paid $ 28,000 in 1997 while a full professor managed to get $ 27,930.A PhD is the highest degree you can get, but except in a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry, where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial aim, you are facing a not very bright future. YThere are more PhDs unemployed in this country than in any other part of the world by far.If you became a PhD in English or history or political science or languages orworst of all in philosophy, you take the risk of becoming over-educated for our national demands.Thousands of PhDs are selling shoes, driving taxis, waiting on tables and filling out applications month after month, and then may be taking a job in some high school or college with the pay much less than a door-keeper makes.45. According to the writer, society expects education to turn out people who will _.A. raise their payment B. become specialized in some fieldC. get employed D. meet the demands as a source of manpower46. Long-distance truck drivers make more money a year than full professors because_.A. the famous law of diminishing functionsB. long-distance truck drivers only get a high school diplomaC. full professors are PhDs in English or historyD. long-distance truck drivers work harder than full professors47. If you dont want to be occupationally dead, you _.A. should look for a job in a primary schoolB. must at least get a high school diplomaC. have to get as high an education as possible D. should try to avoid being overeducated in philosophy48. The underlined phrase “put on the brakes” in the 3rd paragraph means _.A. stop learning for a high degreeB. take up a masters degree at onceC. go on studying in a first-class university D. find any interesting job49. We can know from the passage that _.A. neither George Washington or Edison finished high schoolB. there are more PhDs than the society demandsC. the higher education you get, the more money you will earnD. if you are specialized in physics, you can not easily get a good job CA Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking is worth reading, especially for those who love science, space, physics, and the universe. About half of Hawkings text is rather hard to digest, which must be why he added pictures to newer editions. Some of the more “abstract” things are hard to imagine, so the pictures help you understand, which is great for visual learners. One turn-off is that this book is based on theoretical physics. Most read the back jacket (封面) and think that it will be way over their heads, but its not, I assure you. First of all, there are two ways to read it. You can read the chapter overviews, which are basic and youll still learn a lot, but it wont be too difficult. Or, you can read the full details in each chapter, which is how youll learn the most, but if its all too confusing you can just look at the pictures. This book constantly makes references to other physicists, history, and current social and economic issues, and explains how each of us is involved in the universe. Dr. Hawking also openly says “I think” about things. He gives his view on matters, shows the facts, presents the most accepted theory to help you see what you think the answer is, so it feels like hes talking directly to you. The reason I love this book more than any other physics “text” is because Dr. Hawking wrote it like a novel. Hes telling a story, the story of the universe, and its just fun to read! I always want to know how and why something is, and in this book Dr. Hawking always answers this question as best he can. If he cant give you a definite answer, hell tell you what he thinks and help you develop your own opinion. I truly hope that Ive convinced you to read this unusual book.50.Pictures are added to A Brief History of Time in order to _.A. make it more attractive to readers B. make it interesting and easy to understand C. help you to develop your imagination D. show you more about the universe 51.The underlined phrase “over their heads” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_”. A. higher than their heads B. rather difficult for them to understand C. very easy for them to read D. too high for them to reach 52.According to the author, A Brief History of Time is _. A. expensive B. popular C. interesting D. confusing 53.We can infer from this passage that _.A. Hawking didnt answer all the questions on the universeB. not all of us have something to do with the universeC. the book doesnt deal with economy but scienceD. Hawking can talk to everyone face to face 第二节 共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分,答案写在答案卷相应的题号后)任务型阅读:以下是购书者的信息,请匹配购书者的信息与它们所对应的书本:54Randy: Christmas is comingRandy wants to know all information about it, such as the games, the food, the stories, the music and the movies55Amy: Amy has many romantic dreamsShe always believes she can find her MrRight like the girls in the fairy storiesSo she is crazy about the books with good endings onlyNow she begins to bury herself in the book like that56Vince: Vince, as the head of his own band, is able to play all kinds of musical instrumentsBut he dreams of becoming musician like John Lennon, a famous singer from a rock bandTherefore, he wants to search for a book on him57Alan: Mystery and adventure are always boys dreamsAlan, one of the boys, especially prefers the ancient ones because he always regards himself as a big man with super power, but not a small boy58Lin Jie: Lin Jie, a student studying English in a university, will go to England to continue his further educationSo he wants to find more information about the country he will study in以下是书本信息:A、British Life by Anne CollinsWhats everyday life for people in Britain?
