Lesson PlanName:Liu TiantianGrade:Postgraduate 1Subject:Unit 1 FriendshipPeriod 3 Grammar: direct speech and indirect speechLesson type:Grammar Teaching time:45 minutesOverall Design & Guiding Principles This is a grammar lesson whose aim is to make students acquire some principles about Direct speech and Indirect speech. After this lesson need to know those points: 1) what Direct speech is and what Indirect speech is; 2) how to change Direct speech into Indirect speech. During this lesson, I will use three knids of teaching methods : Task-based teaching method, Communicative teaching method and situation teaching method. With the help of those three methods, students can through some tasks and communication to acquire the rules of the grammar in a certain situation. In this process, I will let students complete relevant tasks, help them learn the language point in a relaxed and relevant astomsphere. Whats more, students can practice Direct speech and Indirect speech through communication with their partner. And at the same time, they can also improve their listening and speaking. There are several parts in this lesson. First of all, the lesson will start with a listening practice contained some direct speeches and indirect speech. After the listening of this conversation, I will give two examples to students and tell them what the direct speech is and what the indirect speech is. Then , students are asked to find all the direct speech sentences and their indirect speech forms. Next, I will let them classify the direct speech sentences before they are changed into indirect speech sentences. In this process, students may find that there are two kinds of forms in direct speech sentences : statements and questions. Fourth, after the classification, I will let students read all those sentence together and then have a discussion with their partners in their own group. After the discussion, every group list what should be paid attention to when we change direct speech into indirect speech. I will have a evaluation about their summary. And at the same time, I will integrate all their findings and give some extra infoemation about the summay if necessary. Fifth, students are asked to take part in various activities to practice direct speech and indirect speech. As for the homework, students are asked to do Exercise1 on Page 42. Here is another page of Annes diary. Read it through and then use indirect speech to retell the story. The homework can help student have a consolidation of what they have learnt in the class.Teaching ContentAnalysis of Teaching Materials: This is a grammar lesson. This lesson is in period 3, Grammar : direct speech and in direct speech , unit 1 Friendship , new senior English for China students book 1, The grammar point of this unit is “direct speech and indirect speech”. This grammar point has two part. In this unit, its the first part statements and questions. It plays a very important role in English teaching of this unit because this grammar point is the first grammar point that students will first meet in their senior school. This lesson focuses on guiding students to find the regulation of this grammar point. The direct speech and indirect speech is a very common grammar point but its regulation may be a little complex. However, in this unit, the grammar point is connected with Annys diary, which can make students learn direct speech and indirect speech in a familiar situation and a relaxed astomosphere. On the one hand, students can review the reading part about Anny diary. On the other hand, there are several practice parts in this lesson to make students consolidate this knowledge through communication with their partners. The teaching content not only asks students to gain the goal grammar knowledge ,but also helps them improve their speaking and listening ability. Analysis of students: The objects of this lesson are students in Grade 1 in senoir high school. Students have learned the sentences of statement and question in junior high school. And they also have learnt some tenses such as the simple tense, past tense, the progressive tense and so on. What more, they have already known the change regulations of persons, verbs, and numbers. All those are the foundation of learning direct speech and indirect speech. However , they also have some disadvantages. On the one hand, they are not familiar with the direct and indirect speech, especially how to change the direct speech into indirect speech. This knowledge is absolutely new for them. So it is a little difficult for them to acquire this knowledge. Students do not have the ability to learn the systematic language grammar. On the other hand , they do not have confidence of learning new grammar in the new semester. Therefore, I will design different interesting tasks and activities to guide and encourage students learning this language point. And at the same time, those activities can enhance studentss self-learning ability and sustain their learning interest.Teaching ObjectivesObjective of knowledgeBy the end of this class, students need to achieve these goals: the students will be able to master the rules of Direct Speech and Indirect Speech (statemets and questions).Objective of abilityBy the end of this lesson, students will be able to master some skills of learning new grammar, such as contrastive analysis, making summary after their observation. enable the students to express others words to a third one by using indirect speech.Objective of emotion students will be more confident and not be afraid of grammar learning. students will develop their sense of group cooperation.Key Points and Difficult PointsKey points: summarize the rules of direct speech and indirect speech by observation these sentences and discussion.Master the rule of direct speech and indirect speech and apply it into communication.Difficult points Master the rule of direct speech and indirect speech and apply it into communication.Teaching Methods Task-based teaching method Communicative teaching method Situation teaching methodTeaching AidsThe multimedia and other normal teaching tools. Teaching ProcedureStep 1: Lead In ( 2 minutes) Greetings : hello everyone! In the last lesson, we have learned Anne Franks story. She is telling her stories to two of her friendsMary and Tom. Tom has something wrong with his ears, so Mary have to repeat Annes sentences, using indirect speech. Sometimes Mary explain Toms sentences to Anne. Now, lets listen to the conversation between them. When you are listening, pay attention to how they interprete Annes words. Ok, lets listen. Purpose: Students may understand the direct speech and indirect speech easily in the created situation. After the listening, students may have a general idea about this grammar point.Step 2: Presentation ( 3 minutes) (1) Pick out two sentences of direct speech and indirect speech from the conversation to tell students what the direct speech is and what the indirect speech is.Purpose : to let students know what exactly direct speech and indirect speech is.Step 3: discussion (5 minutes ) Ask students to find all direct speech sentences and their indirect speech forms according to what I have to tell them. And compare their findings with others. I will let them classify the direct speech sentences before they are changed into indirect speech sentences. In this process, students may find that there are two kinds of forms in direct speech sentences : statements and questions. Purpose: through their observation and discussion with their classmates students students can classify those sentences by themves. And it can encourage students to find new knowledge by themselves.Step 4: Summary (10 minutes) After the classification, I will let students read all those sentence together and then have a discussion with their partners in their own group. After the discussion, every group list what should be paid attention to when we change direct speech into indirect speech. I will have a evaluation about their summary. And at the same time, I will integrate all their findings and give some extra infoemation about the summay if necessary.Purpose : the rules of the grammar is the key and difficult point in this lesson. Students should try to make the summary of rules by themselves to make them get rid of the fear of grammar learning. With the help of the teacher, they can successfully do it, which can make them more confident in English learning.Step 5 : Practice ( 23 minutes ) (1) practice accoding to the picture.(5 minutes) Display some pictures to creat a situation of direct speech and indirect speech. Such as: (picture) “I have to stay in the hidding place.” said Anne. (Anne said to Jim) “? .”(Jim said to Alice) Students are required to finish the sentence which Jim said to Alice by applying indirect speech. . Purpose: throgh several pictures can creat the situation of using direct speech and indirect speech. Its interesting and novel for students and can raise their interests as well as reduce their anxiety of learning grammar. (2) pair work (8 minutes) Students are asked to do pair work on page12, on their work: One of you will be a child and the other the grandmother. The grandmother is listening to a weather report with her grandchild. Try to use indirect speech in your dialoge. GM: Whats the weather in Beijing tomorrow ? I cant hear the man clearly on the TV. GC: Thats all right, I can help. The man said . GM: What did he say about Shanghai ? GC:. Purpose: make students practice indirect speech in another situation.(2) group work(10 minutes) Much more activities are employed to elicit students to practice direct speech and indirect speech. Such as, a student say a statement or question, next member of this group has to retell hisher words to next member. Then, heshe say another statement or question. Purpose: In this part, students will practice more exercises of this grammar point. rules are indeced by students. These rules may make a deep impression on their minds. Then, these activities can help students practice more and have a better understanding of the rules. Step 6: homework ( 2 minutes) Studens are asked to do Exercise1 on Page 42. Here is another page of Annes diary. Read it through and then use indirect speech to retell the story.
