pollution caused by human beings. the noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. it is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. such noises are added to natural sounds. these sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves. decibels (分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. a noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. in water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninetyfive would have the same effect. some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in the oceans. they have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales. a team of american and canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. the research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. this seriously affected the whales ability to exchange information and find their way. some of the whales even died. the explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected. many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. they say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. however, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. they want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean. 16according to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?athe sound of cars.bthe sound of voices.cmanmade noise pollution.dthe sound of steps.17according to the passage, natural sounds include all of the following except_.asounds made by animals themselvesbocean drillingcunderwater earthquakesdthe breaking of ice fields18which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?athe same noise level produces a different effect on land and in the ocean.bdifferent places may have different types of noises.cthe decibel is not a suitable unit for measuring underwater noise.ddifferent ocean animals may have different reactions to noises.19which of the following is true of whales?athey wont be confused by noises.bthey are deaf to noises.ctheir ability to reproduce will be lowered by highlevel noises.dtheir hearing will be damaged by highlevel noises.20according to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?athey will work hard to reduce ocean noise pollution.bthey will protect animals from harmful noises.cthey will try to set a limit of 120 decibels.dthey will study the effect of ocean noise pollution.bthe sea has always interested man. from it we can get food, minerals, and treasure. for thousands of years, we could sail on it. but we could not go far beneath its surface. man wants to explore deep into the sea. however,we are not fish. we must breathe air, so we cant stay under the waters surface for any length of time. to explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems. a diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. he can wear a diving suit and have air pumped to him from above. he can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a nose and a mouthpiece. water weighs 800 times as much as air. tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. his body is under great pressure. when a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. as he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less. if the diver rises too quickly, the gases in his blood form bubbles. the diver is then suffering from the bends. the bends can cause a diver to double up in pain. they can even kill him.21on the whole, this passage is about_.aspecial mixtures of gases in deep seabthe problems man faces in deepsea divingcair pressure under the surface of sea waterda kind of illness that man suffers in the sea22a divers body in deep water_.ais under great pressurebis just like that of a fishcsuffers from the bendsdweighs very little23the passage does not say so, but it makes you think that_.adeep divers should be in good healthbdivers explore the deep sea only for treasurecdiving under the water too quickly causes a kind of illnessdthere is a special mixture of gases under the sea24why does a diver get the bends?ahe tries to do exercise under the water.bhis diving suit weighs too much.che comes to the surface too quickly.dthe air in his blood is used up.25from the passage we can see that_.athe sea began to interest man in the last few yearsbman is not at home deep in the seacall divers will get the bends sooner or laterdthe air in the sea water will kill a diver if he is not careful答案课时作业(三十三)
