语 篇 提 能阅读理解AAn “applepolisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe, but is close to it.“Applepolishing” is as old as human society, but the phrase itself is recent, about 50 years old. It comes from the schoolroom. For a long time, some schoolboys would leave a shiny apple on the teachers desk. They would rub and polish the apple to give it a bright shine, so as to make it look more tasty. Such a gift, the student hoped, might make the teacher shut her eyes to his poor work and give him a good mark. All sorts of people are applepolishers, including politicians and people in high offices almost everybody. There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “applepolishing” “softsoaping” or “butteringup”. A gift is just one way to “soft soap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how wise he is. Flattery, of course, is the cheapest kind of “applepolishing”. To flatter another costs you nothing and you can give it as freely as you want. And you can always find somebody eagerly looking for it.1An “applepolisher” is one who _.A. tries to please someone to get favourB. bribes with apples or money to get somethingC. is really friendly to everyone around himD. plants apple trees and polishes his apples every day答案与解析A细节理解题。由第一段第一句可知“applepolisher”是A项所描述的一种人。2The phrase “applepolishing” comes from _.A. the farm B. the factoryC. the schoolroom D. the countryside答案与解析C细节理解题。由第二段第二句“It comes from the schoolroom.”可知C项正确。3Why did the student polish the apple for his teacher?A. Peter was fond of Mary and always stayed close to her. They, more curious than frightened, watched the spaceship land and saw a door open. When nobody came out, they went to the spaceship and entered inside. Peter followed Mary into the spaceship and did not hear the door close behind him. The temperature fell rapidly and the two young people lost consciousness. When they woke up, they were surprised to see that they were back by the river again. The spaceship had gone. Their car was nearby.“What happened?” asked Mary.Peter scratched (抓) his head, saying slowly, “Dont ask me. Perhaps we had a dream. Did you see a spaceship?”“Yes,” said Mary. “And we both went into it. Then .” she looked at her wrist. “Thats funny. My watch has stopped. Oh, well, come on. Its time to go home.”Driving about fifty metres, they found their way blocked by a thick wall made of something like glass. They got out of the car and tried to find their way round the wall but discovered that they were inside a circular (循环的) wall. It was like a mirror and prevented them from seeing through it.On the other side of the wall, strange_creatures walked past slowly. A few stopped to stare at them: “a pair of earthlings (地球人) in their natural surroundings with their mobile house.”语篇解读Mary和Peter在河边野餐时,误入外星人的太空船,而被带到了外星球。5When the spaceship arrived, why didnt Peter drive away?A. He did not like leaving Mary.B. He knew that the spaceship was harmless.C. He was too frightened to drive.D. There was a wall blocking the road.答案与解析A细节理解题。根据第二段“Peter was fond of Mary and always stayed close to her.”可知彼得想和玛丽在一起,所以没有开车离开。6Why did Peter enter the spaceship?A.
