单词填空(一)last year my english class was (困难的)for me. first of all, it wasnt (容易的) for me to (理解)the teacher when she talked to the class. to begin with, she spoke too quickly, and i couldnt understand every word. later on, i realized that it doesnt (重要,要紧)if you dont understand every word. also i was (害怕)的to speak in class, (因为) i thought my classmates might laugh at me. i couldnt always make (完整的)sentences, either. then i started to watch english-language tv. it helped a lot. i (认为)that doing lots of listening practice is one of the secrets of becoming a good language (学习者). another thing that i found very difficult was english grammar. so i decided to take lots of grammar notes in every class. then i started to (写)my own original sentences using the grammar i was learning. its amazing how much this helped. now i am enjoying learning english and i got an a this (学期). my teacher is very impressed.(二)the other day, my friends and i talked about the rules that we have in school. at our school, we have to wear uniforms every day. the problem is that all my classmates think the uniforms are (丑陋的). we think young people should look (聪明的)and so we would like to wear our own clothes. our teachers (相信)that if we did that, we would (集中)more on our clothes than our studies. we (不同意). we would feel more (舒适的)and that is good for studying. if we cant do that we should be allowed to (设计) our own uniforms. that would be a good way to keep both teachers and students (高兴的).its also (很可能)a good idea for parents to allow teenagers to study in groups (在期间)the evening. i know we get noise sometimes, but we learn a lot from each other. we also think that vacations should be longer. at (目前)theyre too short. longer vacations would give us time to do things like volunteering. last summer i had an (机会)to volunteer at the (当地的) hospital, but i couldnt because i had to go back to school. it would be a good (经历)for me because i want to be a doctor when im older.(三)accidentsquestion 1: what would you do if you cut yourself by accident? doctor: you should (覆盖)the cut with a clean cloth and (按,压)it hard. if its a (深的)cut, you should see a doctor. question 2: if my grandmother fell (在楼下), and wasnt moving, id hurry to call the hospital first. is that (正确的)? doctor: yes, speed is very important. get the (医学的)help first, then make her comfortable and stay with her. question 3: what would you do if you burned yourself by accident? doctor: well, first find out how bad it is. then put the burned area under cold running water. question 4: what would you do if you injured your (膝盖)while running? doctor: if i felt some pain, id stop exercising. and if it hurt for more than a few days, id see a doctor.problemsproblem 1: a friend offers you cigarettes at a party.advice: of course you should (拒绝)! if i were you, id also talk to your friend about the dangers of smoking.problem 2: children often think medicine is candy and eat it.advice: you must always (隐藏)medicine from children, and you should tell children to ask their parents before they eat “candy” they find.problem 3: an “internet friend” has asked if you could meet.advice: you should tell your parents about it, agree to meet in a (公众的)place, and you shouldnt go (独自地).problem 4: you get pimples when you are (紧张的).advice: you should drink lots of water and ask your doctor for advice.(四) this is hong taos (最近的)movie. i like hong tao. hes made some great movies over the years. (不幸地), this is his worst movie. if youre looking for (娱乐), stay at home and watch tv. yellow river fisherman is too long, and its really boring. it does have a few good features, though. i thought the fishermans (妻子)was really funny.be sure to see this exhibition at the lido gallery. amy kim is one of he best-known chinese photographers in the world today, and some of her most (著名的)photos are on (展览)in this exhibition. she really has something for everyone. there are many great photos of people and of the (农村). the few city photographs are less (成功的). i see the same things every day and they dont (使感兴趣的)me as much. but this is a great show from a world-class photographer. whatever you do, dont miss this exhibition.over the years, weve seen (音乐的)groups with pretty strange names come and go. few have stranger names than this band. as the name suggests, the band has lots of (能量). and they play the kind of music that i love to hear. every song is really loud and often you cant understand the words, but this is okay because the lyrics arent very good. (然而), these are musicians who make us happy-even on a monday morning!(五)how important is keeping healthy to you? a group of young people got together to discuss this question. heres part of their (讨论).peter: id like to stay healthy, but to be (诚实的), i only eat food that tastes good. and if food tastes good, its usually bad for you, isnt it? cola tastes better than water, for example.kim: well, food that is bad for you can (尝)good! but i prefer not to eat too much food that is fried, like, er french fries. do you eat fast food, laura?laura: do i eat fast food? never! i love to eat food that is healthy. i want to take care of my health, so i eat mainly (水果)and vegetables. oh! and i stay away from sugar, you do too, dont you?kim: hm, yes. and i think most people are in (同意)that fruit and vegetables are good for health. but, um, i would say that fast food (它自己)isnt always bad for you, but too much of it is not good.laura: actually, dont you know that its been found in laboratory testing that some types of oil are really bad for us? so i dont eat anything thats been cooked in oil. also, did you know that some foods might cause cancer? like burnt barbecued meat. ive heard eating burnt food like this can (增加)the risk of cancer.peter: really! but i love to eat meat thats well cooked, even if it is a little burnt. its delicious, and meat isnt really (危险的), is it?laura: oh! yes, it is! i never eat meat. its not at all good for our health. if i were you, id eat nuts (代替).kim: well, i agree its good to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, but i think its also fine to eat some meat or fish. people who eat a balanced diet should be healthier than those who only eat biscuits and hamburgers, shouldnt they? i prefer to only eat food that i like, but isnt it important to eat food thats healthy, even if you dont like it? the (主要的)thing is to have a good balance.(六)we all dream about things that we would like to do, and things we hope to (完成)in the future. but are everybodys dreams the same? here are some of the (发现)of a survey about hopes and dreams, in which thousands of students across china took part.what are the hopes of teenagers?we received (几个)different answers to the question: what would you like to do after finishing your education? it seems some students would like to start work as soon as possible, so that they can help provide better lives for their parents. other students hope to (继续)studying after finishing school, and to go to university. although money is important, many teenagers said they want to do jobs they enjoy. according to the survey, the most popular (机会)of job is computer (编程)what are the dreams of teenagers?teenagers have all kinds of dreams. some are more realistic than others. for example, many students said they would like to be volunteers at the 2008 olympics, maybe working as (翻译员)or tour guides. and quite a few said they dream of going to the moon one day.according to the survey, less realistic dreams are also common, but many students reported that they were (乐意的)to work hard to achieve their dreams. quite a few dream of becoming famous, perhaps famous sportspeople or singers. some said theyd love to go on exciting trips; one student said shed love to (航行)across the (太平洋)ocean. and then there are dreams that are impossible; three students said theyd like to be able to fly!conclusionit was clear from the survey that teenagers have (相似)hopes. it seems that most students hope to have a good education and find a good job. on the other hand, students dream of very different things: good things, and even crazy things. it is very important to dream, so hold on to your dreams; one day they may just come true.(七)did you know that tea, the most (流行的)drink in the world (after water), was invented by (事故)? although tea wasnt brought to the western world until 1610, this (饮料)was discovered over three thousand years before that. according to an (古老的)chinese (传说)the emperor shen nong discovered tea when he was boiling drinking water (在之上)an open fire. some leaves from a nearby (灌木)fell into the water and remained there for some time. the emperor noticed that the leaves in the water produced a (合意的)smell. later he decided to taste the hot (混合)it was quite delicious. and in this way, one of the worlds (最喜爱的)drinks was invented.(八)asking for (消息;信息)or help is a very common and (必要的)activity, especially when we visit a foreign country, so knowing how to ask for information politely is important. in english, “where are the restrooms?” and “could you please tell me where the restrooms are?” are similar requests- both are correct english, but the first could (听起来)rude. its important to use correct language, but sometimes this alone is not enough- we need to learn how to be polite when we make requests.in english, just like in chinese, we change the way we speak when talking with different people. the expressions you use might (依靠)on whom you are speaking to or how well you know them. if you said to your teacher, “where is my book?”, this might sound rude. but if you said, “excuse me, mr west. do you know where my book is?”, your question will sound much more polite. on the other hand, it might be alright to say “where is my book?” in some situations, perhaps with people you know well.and you would not (通常地)say, “ peter, lend me your pen.” a very direct order like this can sound rude in english. usually in english polite questions are longer and include (额外的)language such as “ could you please?”or “can i ask?” it sounds more polite to say, “peter, could you please lend me your pen?” sometimes, we might even need to spend some time leading in to a question or request. for (例子), if you stop a stranger in the street, we might first say, “excuse me , i wonder if you can help me” or “ im sorry to trouble you but,” before asking them for help.it might seem that speaking politely is more difficult than being direct, and in a way this may be true. however, in order not to (冒犯)people, learning about language (礼节)is just as important as learning grammar or vocabulary. and doing this will also help you become better at english, or any other language you (希望)to speak.(九)where im from, were pretty (放松的)about time. if you tell a friend youre going to their house for dinner, its okay if you arrive a bit late. spending time with (家庭)and friends is very important to us. we often just (落下)by our friends homes. we dont usually have to make plans to meet our friends. often we just walk around the town (中心), seeing as many of our friends as we can!in (瑞士), its very important to be on time. were the (土地)of watches, after all! if someone invites you to meet them at 4:00, you have to be there at 4:00. if youre even (十五)minutes late, your friend may get (生气的). also, we never visit a friends house (没有)calling first. we usually make plans to see friends. we usually plan to do something interesting, or go (在某地)together.(十)in the (现代的)world, advertising is (各地;到处)! some people think that ads are great. others hate ads, saying that they make our cities and (农村)look ugly. many ads are aimed (特定地)at teenagers, and some young people see more than 100 advertisements a day. its true that some ads can be very useful. for (实例), they can help you to compare two (不同的)products so that you can buy the one you really need. they can also help you save money. when prices are listed, you can go to the store with the lowest price. ads also tell you when stores are having sales.
