The sand involved in the sandstorm can reach heights of about 3. 05 m15. 24 m. It is very dangerous to experience a sandstorm. Sand can get into the nose, eyes, mouth and lungs. If you happen to be caught in a sandstorm, you must protect yourself by wearing masks, scarves and so on. If youre driving when such a storm approaches, its advised that you pull off the road, since its difficult to continue driving. This is also important since vehicles can fail in during sandstorms and you could end up stuck on the road. Most sandstorms occur in spring, and during the daytime. Many of the areas around the Persian Gulf and the Sahara Desert are associated with the most serious storms. Since its a natural phenomenon, it cant be entirely controlled. In areas that are natural desert regions, you cant always prevent a sandstorm. Theres much evidence that the planet Mars has dust storms, and clearly, no human intervention(介入)is responsible for such. Though it can move whole sand dunes and destroy crops, a sandstorm is not without benefit(益处). 56. If youre driving in a sandstorm, youd better. A. usefulB. useless C. harmfulD. powerful58. According to the writer, a sandstorm. A. is the result of human activitiesB. can be preventedC. cant completely disappear on the earthD. cant be forecastBFreezing weather can mean frostbite and hypothermia(体温过低)unless a person is prepared. The following is about how to stay warm, dry and safe. Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long. It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose and ears. People with minor cases of frostbite that affect only the skin may not suffer any permanent damage. But if deeper tissue is affected, a person is likely to feel pain every time the area gets cold. If blood vessels are damaged, people can suffer a gangrene(坏疽)infection. Sometimes the only way doctors can treat an injury like this is to remove frostbitten areas like fingers and toes. Hypothermia is a condition that develops when the body cannot produce as much heat as it releases. Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shaking, very slow breathing and difficult thinking clearly. Hypothermia can lead to death if the person does not receive help. To avoid cold-related injuries, here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to staying warm. Think of COLDC. O. L. D. The C stands for cover. Wear a hat and a scarf to keep heat from escaping through the head, neck and ears. And wear mittens instead of gloves. In gloves, the fingers are separated, so the hands might not stay as warm as they would in mittens. The O stands for overexertion. Avoid activities that will make you sweaty. Wet clothes and cold weather are a dangerous combination. L is for layers. Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better than wearing a single heavy layer of clothing. Make sure outerwear is made of material that is water-resistant and tightly knit. D is for dry. In other words, stay as dry as possible. Pay attention to the places where snow can enter clothing. These include the tops of boots, the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens or gloves. And here are two other things to keep in mindone for children and the other for adults. Eating snow might be fun but it lowers the bodys temperature. And drinking alcohol might make a person feel warm. But what it really does is weaken the bodys ability to hold heat. 59. Why does frostbite mainly happen on the hands, feet, nose and ears, according to the passage?A. Because these parts cannot produce as much heat as they release. B. Because these parts often uncontrollably shake. C. Because these parts are usually wet. D. Because the skin of these parts is sometimes exposed to extreme cold for too long. 60. Which of following would be the best title of the passage?A. How to stay warm, dry and safeB. What is frostbiteC. What is hypothermiaD. Think of COLDC. O. L. D61. They are gloves which are thicker and warmer than ordinary ones. D. They are gloves in which one layer is on top of another. 62. Eating snow is not what children should do in freezing weather because. A. eating snow may make you frostbittenB. eating snow may make your clothes wetC. eating snow may lead to death if the person does not receive helpD. eating snow may lower the bodys temperatureBook3 Module 4同步单元测试题(二)C(2013海口高一检测)Youre standing with your classmates. Everyone is talkingexcept you. Perhaps youre afraid they will laugh at what you say. Or maybe you just arent brave enough to speak. Ive been there, and so have many other people all over the world. Shyness is like a snake that crawls(爬)into our mouths and stops us speaking. But we shouldnt let it stay there. I am 29 years old. Even today, that snake still sometimes visits me. But when I was in high school, I was so shy that I wouldnt talk to anyone except my parents and best friends. If a stranger asked me the way to a local shop, it was as if Id forgotten how to talk. One summer, I got a job in a restaurant and that helped a lot. It meant I had to talk to customers. I had to tell them how much their meal cost. I had to ask them if they wanted to drink Coke or Sprite. I had to tell the people in the kitchen if someone wanted pickle(泡菜)on his sandwich. This job taught me how to speak with people. You may not be old enough to find a part-time job. But you can look for other chances to speak with people. You can offer to help an old woman carry her heavy bag. Or you can go to get a newspaper for your family. If you do these things for a while, the “shyness” snake will soon begin to leave you alone. Itll look for another mouth to crawl into. 63. The authors duties in the restaurant included. A. cooking the meals for customersB. taking the customers ordersC. discussing the menu with the managerD. helping people in the kitchen66. What would be the best title of the passage?A. I am shyB. How to overcome shynessC. What is shynessD. Everybody is shyD Meredith Marx remembers family game night and how she, her brother and their parents gathered around the dining room table to talk, laugh and move game pieces around the boards. It was a fun way to reconnect and relax. Try as she might, its become much harder for the mom to create similar memories for her 6-year-old twins, Casey and Parker. The kindergartners have been surrounded by technology all of their lives. They bounced to Baby Einstein CDs, learned Spanish from Dora the Explorer, and are reading at a first-grade level thanks to their Leapster pads. They are good at getting to games on moms iPhone and grandmas iPad. Though she came of age in the“wired”1990s, Marx worries that all of the electronic things surrounding her daughters are taking them away from precious family time. “I had video games when I was a kid, and it was fun, but now theres so much more out there that completely controls peoples time, ”says the radio traffic reporter, who is in her early 30s. “I dont know if kids today would get by without knowing these things. Its becoming all electronic. The only thing electronic I had was the board game Operation. ”Marx is not alone in wondering how our increasingly technology-focused world is affecting her children and other “digital natives”. Parenting can seem depressing in the digital era. Smart phones, tablets and social networking have transformed how people work, play and communicate. According to a survey released by the Kaiser Family Foundation in 2010, children between the ages of 8 and 18 spent more than 53 hours a week on electronic media. Typically, they devoted seven hours and 38 minutes a day listening to music, watching TV and movies, playing video games and hanging out online, with many children using two forms of media at once. Parents who dont keep up with the changes can feel like they are standing at the side of a widening technological gulf. They dont want to lose their ability to stay close to their children and guide them to a successful, healthy future. Therefore, how to bridge the digital gap is what they are wondering. 67. By the first two paragraphs, the writer wants to tell us. A. Mothers childhood is fun but her childrens is notB. Mothers childhood isnt interesting but her childrens isC. Mother and her children have a similar happy childhoodD. Mothers childhood is different from her childrens68. What does Mother think of all of the electronic things surrounding her daughters?A. She thinks that all of the electronic things will have a good effect on her daughters. B. She worries that all of the electronic things are affecting her daughters. C. She thinks that all of the electronic things will make their lives happier and more convenient. D. She thinks that all of the electronic things will make her and her daughters much closer. 69. _is Mothers electronic game. A. Dora the ExplorerB. Leapster padsC. Baby Einstein CDsD. Operation70.
