lady michelle obama turns 50 on friday, jan. 17, 2014.michelle obama has spent the first half-century of her life breaking barriers and checking off a series of firsts. now, as she reaches her milestone birthday friday, the nation will be watching to see in what other areas she will leave her mark.five years after moving into the white house, and without a re-election campaign to worry about, she has more room to relax in her role and, political watchers say, possibly become more vocal (声音的) on political issues in the three years left in office.so far, critics have complained about michelles silence on issues where they expected to hear her voice: last year, at the start of her husbands second term, she disappointed advocates for tighter gun-control measures after she failed to push harder on the issue in response to the massacre (残杀) at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, conn. she also disappointed some feminists (女权主义者) who wanted her to defend their causes instead of falling back on her self-described role as the nations “mom-in-chief.” nor did she handle racial issues during her second term, as some had expected.“the most important thing to remember is, whether you are black, white or hispanic, youre the first lady and the president of all the people in the united states. thats a huge melting pot, so to reinforce (强化)that shes african american over anything else would not be wise,” said anita mcbride, who directs programming and national conferences on the legacies (遗产) of americas first ladies and their historical influence at american university.valerie jarrett, a top white house adviser and a close friend of the obamas, said the first lady doesnt want to “spread herself too thin.”“she really wants to have a maximum impact and to do that in fewer areas,” jarrett told the associated press. “that, she said, “is better than trying to take on every single possible cause.”but robert watson, a lynn university professor, said he expects obama to “go a little harder at issues” over the next several years. “second-term first ladies usually feel more at ease to speak more forcefully about issues close to their heart,” he said.myra gutin, a ryder university communications professor and frequent lecturer on first ladies, said she expects obama to continue making both of them a priority in her remaining years in the white house, given their success. michelle launched the “lets move” campaign in 2010. it in particular has gained widespread support, ranging from the national football league to the sesame street franchise (特许), which even gave permission to the produce industry to use its licensed characters for free on fruits and vegetables.“theres no such thing as a traditional first lady, not anymore in this technology-filled world. is mrs. obama cutting edge? is she an activist? no. as first ladies go, i think shes been politically careful because she does not want there to be a major flare-up that would require her husband to use his political capital to clean up,” she said. “but shes not exactly just sitting in the white house pouring tea and having receptions, either.”【小题1】critics were disappointed with michelle because _.a. she didnt put gun-control measures into effectb. she failed some feminists to stand out to be a career womanc. she didnt solve some racial problemsd. she failed to voice her opinion on some issues【小题2】according to the professors or advisers, which of the following statements is not true?a. its not wise to reinforce michelle is african american over anything else.b. its better for michelle to have a maximum impact than to take on every possible cause.c. its expected for michelle to go a little harder at issues.d. its a tradition for first ladies to stay out of political issues.【小题3】what does the underlined phrase “spread herself too thin” in paragraph 6 mean?a. try to do a lot of work at the same time.b. get very tired.c. try to improve physical fitness.d. move herself away from others.b.climate change could affect food supplies, water resources, human health and homes.if greenhouse gas emissions keep increasing at the current rate, global temperature is expected to rise between 2c and 6c by 2100. this doesnt sound much, but a 5c change is the difference between the current warm period and an ice age. global warming leads to other changes in the climate: melting ice, more evaporation(蒸发), changes in geographical patterns of rainfall, heavier downpours separated by longer dry spells, more frequent heat waves, more intense hurricanes, and sea level rise. these changes could affect crop growth as drought, increased evaporation and shrinking glaciers(冰川)disrupt water supply. some crops could suffer heat stress. while there may be benefits in some regions, overall climate change is likely to have a negative impact on global food supplies. the impacts of climate change on agriculture will vary widely around the world. a global temperature rise of 12 c is expected to increase food production in some regions, particularly mid-latitude areas. but in tropical regions even a small amount of warming could reduce crop yields. a temperature rise of 3 c or more could threaten global food resources, as all regions are likely to experience negative impacts overall.freshwater resources could also diminish, especially in tropical regions, as rain patterns change and evaporation speeds up. some communities could lose essential melt water as glaciers disappear, while more intense rainfall and hurricanes could cause more flooding, leading to water pollution and bacterial diseases such as cholera(霍乱)becoming more widespread. climate change could lead to a variety of health impacts both positive and negative. on the negative side, scientists anticipate more cases of malnutrition, heatstroke and waterborne diseases such as cholera. although some populations will benefit from a reduced risk of cold-related illnesses such as hypothermia, overall a warming world is likely to have negative effects on human health.scientists also expect damage to homes and buildings from more intense hurricanes, heavier rainfall and rising sea levels. climate change is likely to affect infrastructure by increasing the risk of both coastal and inland flooding around the world, owing to a combination of heavier rainfall, rising sea levels and increased storm damage. homes and buildings could also be affected by the thawing of frozen ground and greater risk of forest fires.the consequences of climate change will have an impact on people around the world. 【小题1】with global temperature increased by 12 c, _. a. crops yields could be increased in tropical regions b. food production could rise throughout the world c. chances are that food resources would be threatened overall d. mid-latitude areas are likely to experience positive impacts【小题2】the underlined word “hypothermia” in paragraph 6 possibly means a serious medical condition caused by_. a. lower temperature than normal b. higher temperature than normal b. more cases of malnutrition d. cases of waterborne diseases【小题3】according to the passage, climate change has both positive and negative effects on _. a. food supplies and buildings b. freshwater resources and homes c. human health and food supplies d. human health and homes【小题4】the passage is mainly meant to tell us _.a. how global warming leads to changes in the climate b. how climate change affects people worldwide c. why climate change affects our crop growthd. why climate change contributes to all bad resultschow do you design a pay plan that motivates people to do their best work? a new study by three harvard researchers suggests a novel answer: shortly after you hire new workers, give them a raise.previous research has shown that paying people more than they expect may elicit reciprocity(相互作用) in the form of greater productivity, notes deepak malhotra, a harvard business-administration professor who worked on the study. what he and his colleagues found, however, was that the connection between more pay and extra effort depends on presenting the increase as a giftthat is, as something youve chosen to do purely as a nice gesture, with no strings attached.malhotra and his team studied 267 people hired by odesk, a global online network of freelancers, to do a one-time data-entry project for four hours. all of the new hires were people in developing countries, for whom hourly wages of $3 and $4 were higher than what they had been making in previous jobs. the researchers split the group up into three equal parts. one group was told they would earn $3 an hour. a second group was initially hired at $3 an hour but, before they started working, they got a surprise: the budget for the project had expanded unexpectedly, they were told, and they would now be paid $4 an hour. the third group was offered $4 an hour from the start and given no increase. even though the second and third groups were eventually paid the same amount, the second group worked harder and produced moreabout 20% morethan either of the other two. people in the second group also showed the most stamina, maintaining their focus all the way through the assigned task and performing especially well toward the end of the four hours. interestingly, the more experienced employees in the high-performing group were the most productive of all, apparently because their previous work experience led them to appreciate the rarity of an unexpected raise. contrary to conventional wisdom, malhotra points out that higher pay, in and of itself, didnt promote productivity: people who made $4 an hour from the beginning worked no harder than those who were hired at $3 and were then paid $3. to get the most impact from their pay plans, he adds, companies might consider not only what to pay new hires, but when to pay it.the key thing is how you present the reason for an increase, he says. doling out extra money could promote productivity most if you make it clear that the pay raise is something youre choosing to do just because you can. our theory is th
