The novel The old man and the sea is undoubtedly Hemingway s masterpiece, describing a tough guy mainly through a violent and hard battle between an old and seasoned fisherman Sandiego ,and a giant marlin fish and schools of sharks which took place far out on the vast sea. This article will analyse the protagonist, the old man, Sandiego. With the development of plot, the characters of the old man were reflected step by step.To begin with, he is old and loney. His old was just told at the very beginning of the novel-he was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck, and everything about him was old. And he was lonely. He once had a wife,but she left him, and he had no children. Other people thought he was unluckly for he has captured no fish during the past 84 days. The only one who cared about him was only a young boy, Mnolin, who helped him everytime he came back from the sea, and who sometimes went out to sea with him. But after his 84-days no gains, the boy was also be commanded by his father to leave him. Therefore, he can only killed time by reading newspapers and cared about the baseball games. He was wise and experienced. He can tell if there was a fish by the direction of th water, and judge weather there would be a hurricane just according to the movements of the cloud. Whats more, he also knew Saline Water can deal with his bleeding and spasmodic hands. When he met the giant fish, he understood how to use skills and patience to win a unfair battle.He was optimistic. He sailed silently on the black sea hopefully. It was quiet all around. He goes out into the clean early morning smell of the ocean, hearing the trembling sound as flying fish left the water and hissing that their still set wings made as they soared away in the darkness. He enjoyed the the beauty of nature, without considering the disappointment of previous days. To him, a new day was a new start. And every day would brought him new hope. He lived on his hope, which gave him the courage to fight with the bad luck.He was brave. Despite the bad environment and dangers that happened all the time over the sea, he sailed out further where no one has ever been, alone. When he met the giant marlin fish, he faced his opponent actively instead of running away. He even fighted with sharks the half way home. And all he had as a weapon was only a tiller and his heart that never gave up.He was courageous and confident that was shown in his brave struggle against sharks. At first, he killed a heavy shark “with his blood hands driving a good harpoon with all his strength” Cooperman, S 1996, but the shark took his harpoon away. Then he lashed his “knife to the butt of one of the oars” Cooperman, S 1996 and killed two “shovel-nosed sharks” Edward, HS 1984 and a single shovel-nosed shark which “came like a pig to the through” Cooperman, S 1996 with the knife.“It is silly not to hope”. 3 He said “Ill fight them until I die”. 3 “A man is not made for defeat”. He also said, “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. 4 It also expresses the theme of the novel, which encourages us to smile in the face of adversity.In fact, the confidence in the Yankees and the great DiMaggio is his faith in fishing skill and victory to win the fight against the great marlin. The most impressed character of Sandiego were his persistence and toughness, which is perfectly reflected in his fighting against the marlin and sharks. For two days, the fish tortured him as it swam out to sea, and tried to make its escape. It made surge to pull the old man down on his face and the blood ran down his check. His hand were cut leaving him terrible pain. He was in danger and in great trouble. Only by cutting the line and letting the fish go could he get rid of all these. But he did not do so. When hungry he ate some tuna; when too tired he slept a bit; when having a cramp in the hand, he clenched his teeth and rubbed it against the trousers. He believed that pain does not matter to a man(James,1952). Finally, he won the victory. But things not ended like that. In the returning trip, the more dangerous and terrible disasters pied up in him: schools of sharks. However, the old man had no fear at all and prepared for the fight again.
