Congress has two parts, which are more or less equal in power. They are known as the House of Representatives and the Senate (参议院). The House of Representatives is larger than the Senate whose 100 members (two from each state) serve for six years. The 435 members of the House of Representatives are elected every two years, and the number from each state is determined by the population of the state. For example, California, which has a large population, has forty-three Representatives, while the state of Nevada has only one. The House and the Senate are divided into small groups which take care of special matters such as education or foreign affairs. The most important work of Congress is often done in these groups, which are called committees. According to the Constitution of the United States, a Senator must be at least thirty years old and must have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years at the time of the election. To be elected to the House of Representatives, a person must be at least twenty-five years old and must have been a citizen of the United States for seven years. At present, members of Congress include businessmen, farmers, teachers, and especially lawyers. In general, Senators are better known than Representatives because they are fewer in number and serve for a longer time. Many American presidents served in Congress before they became presidents. Presidents John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon were all Representatives and then Senators before becoming presidents of the United States.56. What is a difference between the Senate and the House of Representatives?A. The number of Senators is less than that of Representatives.B. The Senate governs large states while the House of Representatives controls small states. C. The House of Representatives is elected every four years while the Senate is elected every two years. D. All of the above. 57. Who has the opportunity to be elected as a Representative in 2008?A. A white man, who was born in 1980 and immigrated to America in 2003.B. A black man, who was born in 1987 and immigrated to America in 1999.C. A woman, who was born in 1988 and immigrated to America in 2000.D. A woman, who was born in 1968 and immigrated to America in 1997.58. We can learn from the passage that Senators _.A. are as powerful as the PresidentB. are well known among people of their statesC. have no chance of becoming presidentD. do work which is more important than the work of RepresentativesWe are often held back by a false understanding about the nature of talent and ability. We are taught that we have no more control over our talents than the color of our eyes. For many years I waited for my talent to show itself so I could reach my potential (潜力). Eventually I realized that waiting is useless, that talent is a choice not a gift, and that love is stronger than any given ability. The main source of confusion is to consider talent equal to natural ability. By making this mistake we discourage ourselves from pursuing what we want. If we arent blessed with natural ability then trying seems pointless. But talent is much more than natural ability. Natural ability will get you in the door but not much further. For example, there are thousands of people with great athleticism, but there is only one Michael Jordan. Jordan became the best because he loved basketball to the point of obsession (痴迷). Passion is what encourages people to endure the hours of practice and it is countless failures that develop skills. Natural ability is unimportant compared to years of hard work and experience. If you really love something, dont be discouraged by a lack of natural ability. Just work hard to improve, study your trade, learn from experience, and before long youll go ahead of those relying on natural ability alone. The same love that makes you want to devote your life to something also encourages you to practice and develop your skills. So stop waiting for your greatness to appear out of thin air. Decide what you really love and start working at it today. No one else is going to do it for you.59. According to the writer, the wrong belief held by people is that _. A. talent is the same as natural ability B. talent is more important than ability C. ability can be strengthened as one grows olderD. a person can never be both kind and talented 60. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Natural ability can be got very easily. B. Natural ability can sometimes get in your way. C. Practicing hard.B. Experiences of failure.C. Natural ability.D. Strong interest. 62. From the passage, we can learn that _. A. there is no need for a person to have some natural ability B. ones success is based on something that is got through effort C. a person is certain to succeed if he loves what he does D. a person can succeed if he happens to have talent I hated writing thank-you notes as a child, but I had no choice: My mother was determined on honoring other peoples kindness and generosity. But now, after a childhood was spent crafting those notes, the music of gratitude flows naturally from me. For example, I hired Brant to build an arbor (棚架) around my front door. I drew it exactly as I wanted, and he realized my vision perfectly. Amazed at the arbors beauty, I called Brant a few weeks after the arbor went up. “What can I do for you, madam?” he asked. His voice was cold and distant. “I am calling to say Thank you.” Silence. “What do you mean?” he asked. “I love my arbor, and I wanted you to know how much I appreciate your work,” I said. More silence. “Ive been doing this work for 20 years, and people only call me when there are problems,” said Brant. He was doubtful. I had a similar experience with L.J., who sold me my car at the Honda dealership. He answered my questions and didnt push. I wrote to let him know that he completely exceeded (超出) my expectations of what a good salesman would be like, and that I was happy with my car choice. L.J. called me a few days later. He said that this was the first thank-you note received in the history of the dealership, which made his workmates look at him differently. No one else had such a happy experience. These experiences give me pause. Are we really living in an age when there are only complaints? It seems to me that when we focus on problems, we only get dissatisfaction and hate. But when we focus on celebrating goodness, we are likely to tune in to what is good. 63. How did the writer form the habit of showing people gratitude? A. Through school education.B. It was formed by nature. C. Through home education.D. It formed with age. 64. When the writer called Brant, he _. A. answered the phone happily B. expected to get the writers gratitude C. thought the writer had some other work for him to doD. thought there was something wrong with the arbor he had built 65. L.J. sold it to her at the lowest price in the history of his dealership D. she depended on the car dealer to make the final decision 66. What would be the best title of this passage? A. The beauty of human nature. B. Treating life in a positive way.C. The art of the Thank you.D. Respecting others work. Fewer than half of American children who live close to school regularly walk or ride a bike to classes, according to a new study. Confused at the increasing rates of childhood obesity (肥胖), Sarah Martin led the study. Many schools have been cutting back on physical education. “Kids need to take advantage of the opportunities that do exist for physical activity,” said Martin. Few kids are found walking or biking to school. The numbers have dropped further as the population has grown while the number of schools has decreased. In 1969, 42 percent who lived far from school walked or cycled and in 2006, just 16 percent did, due to the further distance. Generally, studies have found that less educated families exercise less and have higher rates of obesity, and dont view walking to school as very important. But Martins survey found that the children of well-educated parents were more likely to get a ride to school. She said in those families, both parents are likely to have well-paid jobs and may also believe its safer to drive their child to school on their way to work. Also, many rural areas are built without sidewalks, good crosswalks or other safety features. Although older urban communities were built with good sidewalks or crosswalks, newer communities like many in the South were designed around the car, and may lack continuous sidewalks or safe crosswalks. Liz Hansen recalled that when her son was young, the family lived just two blocks from his elementary school. But she usually drove him because she worried about his safety. Later, her son lived less than a mile from his high school, but he didnt like to walk or even ride the bus. “It was uncool,” she said.67. For what purpose was the survey carried out? A. To encourage children to take more exercise. B. To stress the importance of physical activity. C. To find out what has caused children to become overweight. D. To prove the correctness of former studies. 68. With the number of schools reducing, _. A. the distance from schools has increased for many familiesB. it is more difficult to employ enough teachers C. it is more difficult for children to receive good education D. working parents have to quit their jobs to send their children to school 69. The largest number of children who walk or bike are probably found _. A. in the new urban communitiesB. in the countryside areas C. in the older urban communitiesD. in the places where there are fewest schools70. Which of the following is NOT the reason why many families drive their children to school?A. Because of their attitude towards taking exercise.B. Because they can afford to drive children to school.C. Because of their concern about childrens safety.D. Because they are following the fashion to do so.71. What can we learn from the passage? A. Many parents are completely satisfied with the safety system of their neighborhood. B. Parents behavior will influence childrens attitude towards exercise.C. Physical education is being greatly stressed in many schools. D. The study led by Martin was the first to research childhood obesity.Back in 1990, when we started selling the ROM machine in Southern California, many of the people who were interested in our ROM machines would ask whether they could visit owners of ROM machines to ask their opinions about them. We persuaded owners of ROM machines to be so kind as to speak to these interested parties and maybe let them try their ROM machines. ROM owners were very happy with the health and fitness results they received from only 4 minutes of exercise per day. Maybe they acted with too much enthusiasm (热情) to help people overcome doubt and it appeared as if it was a setup. Most of these ROM owners who had allowed people to come and try their ROMs became very frustrated, as only 20% of the people they had tried to help actually bought a ROM. So they felt that they had let 80% of them down by not being able to persuade these possible ROM customers to invest in their own health by buying a ROM. For us, the producers, it was a bit embarrassing to have to ask these ROM owners for favors all the time. That was when we got the idea to allow people to rent a ROM for 30 days to try it out. In 1991, we started an experiment of renting ROM machines for a 30-day trial period. At first only in Southern California we could see how it would work. Soon we expanded it in 1992 to all of California, Arizona and Nevada. In 1994, we expanded the renting to a
