Teaching contents: Module 5 : Cultural CornerDescription of students: 50 Ss, senior high Ss of this stage are quick in thought and they are eager to show what they know and they have certain ability to read some passages about science and technology .But they may still find such passages difficult and boring. So how to stimulate their interests in science and technology is important . culture corner of Module 5 is a good choice .Time & date: on Sunday, June 16th , 2013Teaching objectives:1. Target languageMain words and expressions: used to, in the area of, be proud of, be supposed to, facility, first-class, lecture , attend/have a lecture, astonished.Main structure: I never used to enjoy science.P49. as the lecturers are people who have made real discoveries in their area of science. P49Im becoming more and more interested in physics. P49so we should be very proud of that.P49My parents are astonished. 2.ability target(1) Enable the students to talk about their attitude to one subject.(2) Improve students reading ability.(3) Learn more about the science of Western schools and how these schools make their students become interested in science . 3. Learning-ability targetThrough the Culture Corner, the students will surely know more about the science of some foreign countries , thus broadening their vision. And Ss may find how our Chinese schools make us become interested in science .Teaching important points1)Encourage the students to talk about their feeling to different subjects.2)Train the students reading ability.3)Teach the students some difficult language pointsTeaching difficult points:1)How to help the students improve their reading ability.2)How to help the students make sense of the passage.3)Help the students talk in class actively.4) Deal with some difficult language points.Learning strategies: Fast reading, intensive reading, pair work and discussionTeaching aids :The multi-media, a blackboardTeaching procedure:Step 1 Lead in by a discussion List some subjects on the Blackboard , let Ss make a discussion. Subjects include: Chinese physics history chemistry English geography math biology politics P.E. music artT: Good morning ,class ! Please look at the Blackboard . Here you can see many subjects . Now please work in groups and discuss ,then answer the following questions.1. What subjects are you interested in?2. Are you always interested in it/them?3. How did you become interested init/them?4. Why are you interested in it/them?5. What do you think of science ?Step 2 Fast reading Read the passage on P49 and answer questions.T: Ok , from your answers to the last question , I can figure that some of you find science interesting, because you are interested in science; while others may find its dull, because they prefer art lessons. Then ,we are going to learn the passage on page 49. read it fast and the question : why has Mark become more interested in science?Give the students some time to do this in pairs, and then check the answers.T: Are you ready to answer the question?Ss: Yeah!T: Why has Mark become more interested in science?S3: I think there are two reasons. One is that the science facilities are very good in the new school, with laboratories that have all the latest equipment. The other is that they have four chances each term to public science lectures, and the lecturers are people who have made real discoveries in their area of science. I think Mark is a lucky person. T: Yeah. Very good !Step 3 Intensive reading Ask Ss to read the passage again , and think about what should our Chinese schools do to make more students become interested in science . T: Science is extremely important to a countrys technology. Knowledge is power . So what can our schools do to make more of us become interested in science . Read the passage again and discuss in groups .Give Ss a few minutes to discuss T: Ok , boys and girls . who would like to talk about your opinion ?S1: I think our school should spend more money on science , buying better equipment , employing better teachers , holding more lectures .S2: I think our teachers should improve the way they teacher , because many Ss dont like the way the teacher use . they feel science is boring .S3: The most important thing is that we should devote ourselves to studying science, even our school cant provide good equipment .T: Ok , great . as you said , if we want more Ss to become interested in science , the school should provide better conditions . at the meantime , as a student ,we should spare no efforts to study science .Step 4 Post reading Deal with the difficult language points in this part. (Showing the following on the screen.)(1).used to used to do sth 表示过去常常做某事(但现在不做了)be used to (doing) sth习惯于(to为介词)be used to do sth 被用来做某事(被动语态)1.Mother used to tell us stories at bedtime when we were children.2.You will soon be/get used to living here.3.This room is used to store rice.(2).lecture n.演讲 讲课 v.作演讲 讲课attend/have a lecture 听讲座give a lecture 作讲座Lecture on sth 作关于的演讲(3)be proud of .以感到骄傲The Nobel Prize is the highest prize there is, so we should be very proud of that.诺贝尔奖是目前科学方面的最高奖, 因此我们感到骄傲。(4)be supposed to 应当,理应Customers are not supposed to smoke here.顾客不可以在这里抽烟(5)astonished adj.吃惊的常以人作主语.astonishing adj.令人惊讶的常以事物作主语astonishvt. 使十分惊讶be astonished to do sth对做某事感到惊讶 be astonished by/at 对.感到惊讶I was astonished to see him here. 看到他在这里我感到很吃惊I was astonished by/at the great progress that he had made.我对他取得的进步感到很惊讶Step 5 SummaryWe have learned more about science through this class . we broaden our horizons.
