The pollution of the planet earthPrepared by: Sean For: ClaudiaTable of contents:uGeneral information about the pollutionuThe impact of human activity on the planetuConsequences of pollutionuHow is the pollution in Shanghai cityuYour recommendationsGeneral information about the pollutionAs is known to all, no air means death. But air pollution is still very terrible, especially in big cities. A lot of cars are speeding on the roads. But the gas which cars send out is poisonous. It mainly contains SO2 that is dangerous for people. There are also many factories. From the chimneys, We can see the grey and black smoke. It is harmful to our health. Water is the “life blood” of our earth . At present, water has been polluting even worse thanYou can imagine. Water makes water polluted? The main sources are sewage and industrial waste. In many lakes and rivers, there are not any living things at all. The fish and the water birds die in aLarge number Noise is another kind of pollution. Too much noise can make you sick, even drive you mad.It can damage your hearing , your health and affect your normal work and study. You life will beUnpleasant. We produce a lot of rubbish every day . We have many waste things , such as used paper,Old newspapers, used plastic bags, bottles, cans and so on. If we dont deal with these wastes,They can pollute the environment. We should reuse the rubbish and make good use of them. If weTry our best to recycle the wastes, there will be less pollution in our life. The impact of human activity on the planetAdverseair qualitycan kill many organisms including humans. Ozone pollution can causerespiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, throatinflammation, chest pain, andcongestion. Water pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per day, mostly due to contamination ofdrinking waterby untreatedsewageindeveloping countries. An estimated 700 millionIndianshave no access to a proper toilet, and 1,000 Indian children die of diarrhoeal sickness every day.Nearly 500 million Chinese lack access to safe drinking water.656,000 people die prematurely each year inChinabecause of air pollution. InIndia, air pollution is believed to cause 527,700 fatalities a year.Studies have estimated that the number of people killed annually in the US could be over 50,000. Oil spills can causeskinirritations andrashes. Noise pollution induceshearing loss, high blood pressure, stress, andsleep disturbance.Mercuryhas been linked todevelopmental deficitsin children andneurologicsymptoms. Older people are majorly exposed to diseases induced by air pollution. Those with heart or lung disorders are under additional risk. Children and infants are also at serious risk.Leadand otherheavy metalshave been shown to cause neurological problems. Chemical andradioactivesubstances cancausecancerandas well asbirth defects.Consequences of pollutionPollution has been found to be present widely in theenvironment. There are a number of effects of this:1. Biomagnificationdescribes situations where toxins (such asheavy metals) may pass throughtrophic levels, becoming exponentially more concentrated in the process.2. Carbon dioxideemissions causeocean acidification, the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earths oceans as CO2becomes dissolved.3. The emission ofgreenhouse gasesleads toglobal warmingwhich affects ecosystems in many ways.4. Invasive speciescan out compete native species and reducebiodiversity. Invasive plants can contribute debris and biomolecules (allelopathy) that can alter soil and chemical compositions of an environment, often reducing native speciescompetitiveness.5. Nitrogen oxidesare removed from the air by rain andfertiliseland which can change the species composition of ecosystems.6. Smogand haze can reduce the amount of sunlight received by plants to carry outphotosynthesisand leads to the production oftropospheric ozonewhich damages plants.7. Soil can become infertile and unsuitable for plants. This will affect otherorganismsin thefood web.8. Sulfur dioxideandnitrogen oxidescan causeacid rainwhich lowers thepHvalue of soil. How is the pollution in Shanghai cityToday, mans life is more convenient, but it also causes problems. The pollution of our earth has become very serious. You see, there are all kinds of pollution around us. First of all, the population has been increasing year by year. In China, since 1920 the population has doubled. Nowadays, China has a population of over One billion. However, the more people, the more pollution. In order to slow down Chinas population growth, China has begun “one-child” policy. This policy has been effective in big cities.Recommendations We produce a lot of rubbish every day . Since more and more trees are cut down, forests are becoming smaller and smaller. Today, the forests have almost gone. A lot of good land has gone with them, leaving only sand. Lots of land land has been turned into deserts. The earth has become drier and drier. We share the common home-the earth. She provides us with enough food, enoughWater and enough living room. We get everything from the home to lead a better life, but we dont do enough to protect it. Isnt man so cruel? Do you hear our earth crying? She is painful and upset! More and more people have realized the importance of protecting the earth. So something has been done. However, it is not enough. The whole world take actions together toSave our beautiful earth and take good care of it!Bibliography1. Pollution - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. M. 2010-08-13.
