Did you know that every five seconds someone in the world goes blind? And that around 45 million people around the world are blind and about half of these are blind because of cataracts?Do you know what cataracts are? Its when the lens in the eye becomes more and more cloudy and eventually makes the person blind. The effects of this on people in poor countries are terrible because they can no longer work or look after themselves. Cataracts can be removed and replaced by perspex lenses (perspex is a special kind of plastic). This simple operation lasts only 20 minutes and, by the next day, the patient is no longer blind. The person who made operations possible for people from poor communities was an Australian eye surgeon called Fred Hollows. In 1985, he realized that people in developing countries were blind because there werent enough medical resources and because the operation was very expensive. He believed that everyone has the right to sight and became determined to find a way of reducing the cost of treatment. So Fred Hollows began training doctors in Nepal, Vietnam and Eritre(厄立特里亚)in performing eye operations. He also started The Fred Hollows Foundation in 1992 and raised enough money to build two laboratories for making perspex lenses. One opened, in Eritrea and one in Nepal in 1994, a year after his death in 1993. This meant that lenses could then be made for around US $6.50 instead of hundreds of dollars. The lenses are now sold to over 50 countries. The Fred Hollows Foundation has worked with blindness prevention organizations in more than 29 countries. It has trained over 750 local surgeons in cataract operations. In 2003, just over ten years after being started, a doctor rained by the Foundation put in the one millionth Fred Hollows perspex lens. Fred Hollows spent his life in the service of others and believed that action was the answer to human unhappiness, not despair. I think that we are very lucky to have our sight and that we have a duty to share what we have. Thank you. . Answer key for Exercise 1:1 Cataracts make things look blurryfuzzyvery unclear. The cataract is covering most of the pupil of the eye. 2 In Photo 2, the patients eyes are being examined through a microscope in a hospital. In Photo 3, the patients eyes are being examined through a microscope that is attached to Fred Hollowss face. The patient is being examined outside, not in a hospital. In Photo 5, the patients eyes are being examined by a doctor who is holding up her fingers to see if the patient can see them. The patient is being examined outside, not in a hospital. 3 Special glasses (like a microscope) that allow the patients eyes to be magnified so he can see any problems with the patients eyes. 4 He is giving the patient an injection. The man on the right is explaining what Fred Hollows is doing. The other people are Vietnamese doctors who are being trained by Fred Hollows. Answer key for Exercise 2:YearEvent/s11985Fred Hollows realized there werent enough medical resources in developing countries;the operation was very expensive.
