courses that i took at my university, but i could have never passed botany. this was because all botany students had to spend several hours a week in a laboratory looking through a microscope at plant cells, and i could never once see a cell through a microscope. this used to make my professor angry. he would wander around the laboratory pleased with the progress all the students were making in drawing the structure of flower cells, until he came to me. i would just be standing there. “i cant see anything,”i would say. he would begin patiently enough, explaining how anybody can see through a microscope, but he would always end up angrily, claiming that i could too see through a microscope but just pretended that i couldnt. “it takes away from the beauty of flowers anyway.”i used to tell him.“we are not concerned with beauty in this course,”he would say.“we are concerned with the structure of flowers.” “well,” id say.“i cant see anything.” “try it just once again,” hed say, and i would put my eye to the microscope and see nothing at all, except now and again something unclear and milky. “you were supposed to see a clear, moving plant cells shaped like clocks.” “i see what looks like a lot of milk.” i would tell him. this, he claimed, was the result of my not having adjusted the microscope properly, so he would readjust it for me, or rather, for himself. and i would look again and see milk.i failed to pass botany that year, and had to wait a year and try again, or i couldnt graduate. the next term the same professor was eager to explain cell-structure again to his classes. “well,” he said to me, happily, “were going to see cells this time, arent we?” “yes, sir,” i said. students to the right of me and to the left of me and in front of me were seeing cells; whats more, they were quietly drawing pictures of them in their notebook . of course, i didnt see anything. so the professor and i tried with every adjustment of the microscope known to man. with only once did i see anything but blackness or the familiar milk, and that time i saw, to my pleasure and amazement, something like stars. these i hurriedly drew. the professor, noting my activity, came to me, a smile on his lips and his eyebrows high in hope. he looked at my cell drawing. “whats that?”he asked.“thats what i saw,” i said.“you didnt, you didnt, you didnt!”he screamed, losing control of himself immediately, and he bent over and looked into the microscope. he raised his head suddenly. “thats your eye!”he shouted.“youve adjusted the microscope so that it reflects! youre drawn your eye!”21.why couldnt the writer see the flower cells through the microscope?. a. because he had poor eyesight b. because the microscope didnt work properly c. because he was not able to adjust the rid of pollutants from beijings smog skies, creating clean air for the citys mask-wearing people.an electromagnetic (电磁)field will pull particles(微粒) in the smog to the ground where they can be easily cleaned.“its like when you have a balloon which has static(静电) and your hair goes toward it. same with the smog,” says artist daan roosegaarde. his studio has reached an agreement with the beijing government to test the technology in one of tile capitals parks.with its skies regularly covered by dirty gray smog, beijing this week announced a series of emergency measures to handle the problem.roosegaarde says an indoor model device has already proven it works and is confident that the results with the help of a team of scientists and engineers can be replicated outside. “beijing is quite a good place because the smog in beijing is quite low. it lies in a valley so theres not so much wind. its a good environment to explore this kind of thing.” “well be able to purify the air and the challenge is to get the top of the smog so you can see the sun again.” roosegaarde acknowledges that projects like this are a way of drawing attention to the problem, rather than a practical solution to beijings awful air pollution. “this is not the real answer for smog. the real answer has to do with clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles.” however, he hopes the project will make a “fundamental statement” by allowing the citys people to realize the difference between breathing clean and smog-filled air.25.the device works by _.a. helping keep the particles out with different lifestylesd. realize how serious the pollution theyre facing isc so many of us hold on to little complaints that may have come from an argument ,a misunderstanding, the way we were raised,or some other painful events. stubbornly,we wait for someone else to reach out to us believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship. a friend of mine, recently told me that she hadnt spoken to her son in almost three years. she said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldnt speak to him again unless he called first. when i suggested that she be the one to reach out,she said,“ i cant do that. hes the one who should apologize. ” after a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. to her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. as is usually the case, when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins. whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn“ small stuff”(问题)”into really“ big stuff” in our minds. we start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. they are not. if you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. the way to be happy is to let go,and reach out. let other people be right. this doesnt mean that youre wrong. everything will be fine. youll experience the peace of letting go,as well as the joy of letting others be right. you11 also notice that,as you reach out and let others be “right”,they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. they might even reach back. but,if for some reason they dont, thats okay too. youll have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly youll be more peaceful yourself.29.the underlined word “ rekindle” in paragraph 1 probably means “ ”.a. recover b. develop c. accept d. replace30.in the authors opinion, we hold on to our anger often because we think .a. we can turn small issues into big ones b. our positions are higher than othersc. our own opinions matter most d. others will be less defensive31.the best thing to do after a quarrel is to_ .a. let go of our own rights b. realize that you are wrong.c. expect others to give in d. apologize to others first.32.what is the main idea of the passage?a. people should keep peaceful when facing small stuff.b. reaching out and apologizing wins one peace and happiness.c. we should tell apart small and big stuff in our daily life.d. its necessary to enjoy our friendship and family relationship.d thanks for signing up for the 2014 black friday turkey trot! this email will provide passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case. the ridge(隆起) structure on a persons fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. _37_ some criminals make use of this fact to remove their
