Resources used Grammar Summary 2 Possible problems Students may confuse the uses of the different verb tenses for future time. Background The interview is based on a real story. Wang Shu grew up in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Upon graduation from the English Department of Beijing Normal University, she left Beijing for Inner Mongolia working as a volunteer teacher. She is still there now. Routes through the material If you are short of time, set some of the exercises for homework and omit Exercise 9. If you have time, do the Options activities. Language Power: pages 58?C59. Mini-Grammar: 4. Listening Before you start Exercise 1 Ask students to look at the picture and guess who the girl is, where she is and what she is doing there. Elicit from students what they know about Inner Mongolia, such as living conditions there, education. and so on. Make sure that students understand the new words and expressions. Students predict in groups what personality the girl has by studying the words. Pre-teach other new words if necessary before doing the listening. Useful vocabulary: duty, especially, think of, proud of Listen to learn Exercise 3 Students read the questions and predict the answers. Students listen to the tape and check their predictions. Students listen to the tape again and make sure of their answers. Students check their answers in pairs before checking them as a class. Students work in pairs and take turns to retell Wang Shus story. Suggestion: If necessary, divide the listening into three parts to make it easier for your students. 1 Listen to the first section of the interview and answer questions 1-2. What is Wang Shus future plan? How does she feel about her work in Inner Mongolia? 2 Listen to the second section and answer question 3. Why did she decide to go there? 3 Listen to the third section and answer questions 4-5. What is she going to do in Inner Mongolia? What do her parents think of her decision? Tapescript I: Good morning and welcome to the show. This morning, I have Wang Shu here in the studio. Shes going to tell us about her plan for the future. Good morning, Wang Shu. WS: Good morning. I: Wang Shu, tell us about your plan, please. WS: Im going to work as a volunteer teacher in a small country town in Inner Mongolia. I: Really? You must be excited! WS: Oh yes, Im really excited about it. (Section 1) I: But why did you make this decision? WS: Well, Ive just graduated from university. As a teacher, I feel its my duty to do something for students in poor areas. I: But life in Inner Mongolia is very hard and quite different from that in Beijing. Are you prepared for that? WS: Yes, I know life there will be especially hard for me. You know, Im the only child in my family and Ive always lived in Beijing. So, teaching in Inner Mongolia is going to be a great challenge for me. But I really enjoy meeting new challenges. Thats why I made the decision to go. (Section 2) I: What are you going to do there as a teacher? WS: Im going to teach middle school students. Ill have lots of lesson plans to make and homework to mark. Ill be very busy. I: What do your parents think of your plan? Do they support you? WS: To tell the truth, they didnt like the idea when they first heard about my plan. But we had a long talk, and I finally won their support. I: And when are you leaving?WS: The train leaves at 9 tomorrow morning. So Im getting up at about 6 to get everything ready. The new school term begins the day after I arrive. I cant wait to meet the students there. They are said to be very good students. I: Im sure your parents are proud of you, and I believe youre going to have an exciting year. WS: Thank you very much. (Section 3)Voice your opinion Exercise 4 Students discuss in groups their opinions andwork out possible reasons why people do voluntary work. Each group shares their opinions with the class. Have a class discussion about it if necessary. Vocabulary Exercise 5 Students work individually, thinking about the cues and what they are going to do. Students read the sentences, decide which words to use, and then complete the sentences. Answers 1. graduated 2. won support 3. prepare for 4. challenge 5. decision 6. volunteer Grammar FUTURE ARRANGEMENTS AND INTENTIONS Exercise 6 Students study the three sentences and identify the verb forms being used. Im going to work ?C?C “going to” + infinitive Students then work in pairs, matching the sentences with the uses (a-c). Ask students to read Grammar Summary 2 for reference. Answers 1b 2a 3c Exercise 7 Students read the sentences and decide the uses. When checking answers, also check that students understand 1) that the Present Continuous is used to express a personal arrangement; 2) why the Present Simple is used, i.e. there are official arrangements that cannot be changed; 3) when you express sbs intention to do sth, you use “going to”. Answers 1b 2a 3cExercise 8 Students read the English language summer camp programme and write sentences using the Present Simple. Students can then read their sentences aloud in pairs before checking them as a class. Exercise 9 Students look at the pictures and describe what the people are going to do. Answers 1. He is going to play the guitar. 2. He is going to change the tyre. 3. She is going to dance. 4. They are going to have a party. Ask students to describe pictures 2 and 4 and revise party and car vocabulary Language in Use Exercise 10 Elicit examples of arrangements students might have for their senior high school life.
