Both the passages and the questions will be spoken once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then mark the corresponding letter on your answer sheet.Passage OneReducing the amount of sleep students get at night has a direct impact on their performance at school during the day. According to classroom teachers, elementary and middle school students who stay up late exhibit more learning and attention problems. This has been shown by Brown Medical School and Bradley Hospital research. In the study, teachers were not told the amount of sleep students received when completing weekly performance reports, yet they rated the students who had received eight hours or less as having the most trouble recalling all the material, learning new lessons and completing high-quality work. Teachers also reported that these students had more difficulty paying attention. The experiment is the first to ask teachers to report on the effects of sleep deficiency in children. Just staying up late can cause increased academic difficulty and attention problems for otherwise healthy, well-functioning kids, said Garharn Forlone, the studys lead author. So the results provide professionals and parents with a clear message: when a child is having learning and attention problems, the issue of sleep has to be taken into consideration. “If we dont ask about sleep, and try to improve sleep patterns in kids struggling academically, then we arent doing our job”, Forlone said. For parents, he said, the message is simple, “getting kids to bed on time is as important as getting them to school on time”.Questions 18 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.18. What were teachers told to do in the experiment? C)19. According to the experiment, what problem can insufficient sleep cause in students? B)20. What message did the researcher intend to convey to parents? D)Passage TwoPatricia Pania never wanted to be a public figure. All she wanted to be was a mother and home-maker. But her life was turned upside down when a motorist, distracted by his cell phone, ran a stop sign and crashed into the side of her car. The impact killed her 2-year-old daughter. Four months later, Pania reluctantly but courageously decided to try to educate the public and to fight for laws to ban drivers from using cell phones while a car is moving. She wanted to save other children from what happened to her daughter. In her first speech, Pania got off to a shaky start. She was visibly trembling and her voice was soft and uncertain. But as she got into her speech, a dramatic transformation took place. She stopped shaking and spoke with a strong voice. For the rest of her talk, she was a forceful and compelling speaker. She wanted everyone in the audience to know what she knew without having to learn it from a personal tragedy. Many in the audience were moved to tears and to action. In subsequent presentations, Pania gained reputation as a highly effective speaker. Her appearance on a talk show was broadcast three times, transmitting her message to over 40 million people. Her campaign increased public awareness of the problem, and prompted over 300 cities and several states to consider restrictions on cell phone use.Questions 21 to 24 are based on the passage you have just heard. 21. What was the significant change in Patricia Panias life? C)22. What had led to Panias personal tragedy? D)23. How did Pania feel when she began her first speech? A)24. What could be expected as a result of Panias efforts? B)Passage ThreeSome mental health research has linked depression in women with lower weight in their babies during the first year of life. They studied 632 women from small villages. The women were in good physical health and in the last three months of pregnancy. The study identified 160 of the women, or one in four, as depressed. They always felt sad or tired. They had problems eating or sleeping. They felt guilty and thought about killing themselves. The researchers compared these women with 160 others who were not depressed. Health workers then weighed and measured the babies of both groups at birth. Re-examinations took place at two, six and twelve months of age. The health workers also re-examined the mental health of the mothers.Babies whose mothers remained depressed grew less than the babies of the other women. The babies of the depressed mothers were also more likely to get sick. Earlier studies showed that ten to fifteen percent of pregnant women and new mothers in Western nations suffer from depression. Other studies in South Asia have found that depression affects almost two times as many women in developing countries.A new program will be started to help these new mothers. In the program health workers will visit new mothers for up to a year. The workers offer advice about things like health and cleanliness. The health workers will also listen to the mothers problems and suggest some easy things at first that she can do for her baby. The program will be tested for three years to see how well it succeeds. Questions 25 to 27 are based on the passage you have just heard.25. What do we know about the condition of the studied women ? A)26. Which of the following is not what the health workers do in the research? B)27. How long will the program last? But as the environment costs of this type of convenience have become clearer, consumers have begun to question its true value. The packaging used by supermarkets (1) creates various environmental problems. The (2) demand for paper for wrapping encourages the cutting down of forests around the world. Making plastic shopping bags (3) requires huge amounts of oil. The (4) precious natural resources used to make packaging are (5) generally wasted because we consumers merely throw the packaging away. We are then faced with the (6) enormous problem of dealing with the packaging we throw away. The problem of supermarket packaging may seem impossible to (7) solve, but there are things consumers can do. First, (8) we can try to buy products with as little packaging as possible. Second, we can refuse the extra bags and packaging supermarket offer consumers. Finally, (9) we can bring our own bags to the supermarket and reuse any plastic bags of containers we bring home. These measures may seem small, but if consumers join together in reducing waste and reusing packaging, (10) we can make real progress in the effort t to have both convenient life styles and a clean environment.Dictation Two The man-nature relationthe crisis of the (1) ecological situationis a (2) global problem. Its solution lies in (3) rational and wise organization of both (4) production itself and care for Mother Nature, not just by (5) individuals, enterprises or countries, but by all humanity. One of the ways to (6) deal with the crisis situation in the “man-nature” (7) system is to use such resources as (8) solar energy, the power of winds, the riches of the seas and oceans and other, as yet unknown natural forces of the universe. But return to our theme, (9) the bitter truth is that those human actions which violate the laws of nature, the harmony of the biosphere, threaten to bring disaster and this disaster may turn out to be universal. How apt then are the words of ancient Oriental wisdom: (10) live closer to nature, my friends, and its eternal laws will protect you!Section D Passage DictationDirections: In this section youll hear a short passage of about 100 words three times. First youll hear the whole passage from beginning to end just to get a general idea of it. Then in the second reading, youll be given a pause after each sentence or sometimes in the middle of a long sentence. During the pause, you must write down the sentence on your answer sheet. The next sentence is read just like the previous one. This will continue until the whole passage ends. You can check what you have written when the passage is read once again without pauses.Man has a blood tie with nature and nobody can live outside n
