Passage 1Choosing the Right Course Choosing the right course is a big decision and it is important to get it right, as it can impact your future success.AWhat interests you? List the fields of study that interest you, and come up with a list of courses you would consider studying based on these interests. Add the topics that you were most interested in during high school as well as jobs that you envied others for. ABAThe internet, newspapers, television and people around you are the best sources of information. Check online about the courses you are interested in and find out about the career prospects and the other info. Speak to people who are in your interested profession and find out what it is to choose your future career. People who have completed university courses can give you an insight from a students perspective - they can tell you the advantages and disadvantages. CTo avoid making mistakes, make sure you review the course outline of the course(s) you want to apply for. Have a look at the subjects you must undertake and the types of learning, assignments and examination tasks involved. This will enable you to form a rough idea of what lies ahead for you. DIf you are set on going to a particular university, dont let this completely dictate your course selection. Compare course outlines and studying facilities between universities to make sure you make the right choice for your educational needs and preferences. If possible, visit the university and attend some of the lectures to get a feeling of what some of the subjects will be like. ETo be certain that you will be committed to your studies, find out the duration of your course. Taking double-degrees, full time or part-time depends on your personal choice. Ensure that you will be able to balance your other priorities along with education. Study flexibility varies amongst universities. FIt is more difficult to get accepted into competitive courses, especially those which are in high demand. This is a good measure of whether you are actually capable of doing well in the course or not. Unfortunately, some courses are too hard to get into, or just too hard to actually succeed in completing. So be honest with your course selection. You should research other universities or similar courses if you are not confident in being accepted into your first preference course. GAffordability is another aspect you need to consider while deciding on your course, as well as the additional costs that occur, such as text books, field trips etc. However, do not let cost hamper your career choice, as there are a number of financial assistance options available to complete the course. HLook at the career prospects of the course before selecting one. Consider various factors such as income, job security, stress, responsibility and other benefits while researching a profession. It is also useful to find out if a future employer will invest in your education.Scan Passage B and complete the following chart with the information in the passage .Task 1Tips on choosing the right courseList the courses, interests and jobs you are interested in.Take full advantage of the best _1_ such as internet, newspapers and so on.Review the _2_ of the courses you want to apply for.It is necessary to visit universities and attend some _3_ .Balance your _4_ along with course study.Look at the _5_ of a course before selecting one. Safety is especially important whether with your families or friends or on your own. You should do what you can to both enjoy your trip and maximize your personal safety. Keep in mind the following tips to make your foreign trip as safe as possible.ADont deal with strangers that approach you. Normally, you will end up approaching someone if you want a service or need assistance with something. You need to beware of individuals who are trying to cheat or steal you. The best thing you can do is to avoid accepting offers from anyone approaching you whether its at airport or on street or in hotel. Know and Bfollow the local laws in foreign cities youre visiting. In the U.S, you may only get a ticket for speeding but in some countries you could end up spending a night in prison. And in some countries, you must carry your passport on you at all times or risk being sent to prison. Or upon arrival in certain places, you must inform the officials of your lodging, your homeland, and the length of your stay. DCAlways let someone know where you are going. Most people travel abroad with friends or family members. However, people split up and do their own things all the time once they arrive in a foreign country. You should always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. Anyway, you cant wander around the city without somebody knowing where you are. Thats just a dangerous and stupid act. Avoid traveling during elections in some countries. There is a requirement of proper and tight security during the critical time, but there are lots of countries where security arrangements during elections are ignored. It is very difficult to survive yourself during widespread violence during election time as happened in some African countries. So it is better to ignore your visit. EUse electrical appliances safely in foreign countries. Youll quickly find out that your American appliances do not fit the European outlets when staying at a hotel in some countries. Dont try to force the connection or alter the appliance in any way to make it fit. Instead, purchase appliances locally or borrow from the staff.
