The villas walls will include special particles that turn into a liquid when squeezed under pressure, flow into cracks, and then harden to form a solid material. The Nano Manufacturing Institute (NMI) , based in Leeds University, will play a key role in an EU project to construct the home by December 2010. The project, called Intelligent Safe and Secure Buildings (ISSB) is funded under the EUs Sixth Framework program. This potentially life saving scheme is led by German building manufacturer Knauf. The villa will be built in Amphilochia, in western Greece, where Knauf currently runs a manufacturing plant. If the experiment is successful, more tremor resistant (防震) homes could be built in earthquake zones across the globe. NMI chief executive Professor Terry Wilkins said, What were trying to achieve here is very exciting. Were looking to use polymers in much tougher situations than ever before on a larger scale. Monitors contained in the villas walls will be able to collect vast amounts of data about the building over time. Wireless sensors will record any stresses and vibrations, as well as temperature, humidity and gas levels. The walls are to be built from novel load bearing steel frames and high strength gypsum board. Prof Wilkins said, If there are any problems, the intelligent sensor network will be able to alert residents immediately so they have time to escape. If whole groups of houses are so constructed, we could use a larger network of sensors to get even more information. If the house falls down, we have got handheld devices that can be used over the rubble to pick out where the embedded (嵌入的) sensors are hidden to get some information about how the villa collapsed. Also, we can get information about anyone who may be around, so it potentially becomes a tool for rescue.1 The aim of the passage is to _.A. report a piece of interesting newsB. promote tremor resistant homesC. inform us of the nanotechnology developmentD. tell us about a tremor resistant home 2 The villa can resist earthquakes because _.A. it will be built on a special placeB. the cracks in its walls can be healed by the polymersC. the special particles can make its walls strongerD. the intelligent sensor network can tell people where there is a crack3 If the tremor resistant home falls down, _.A. no one can be hurt in the earthquakeB. the intelligent sensor network will stop workingC. rescue work can be done more quickly and accuratelyD. a warning signal will be given to other residents4 What Prof Wilkins said suggests that _.A. he is doubtful about the projectB. he thinks the tremor resistant home is perfectly designedC. he is confident in the tremor resistant homeD. the tremor resistant home still needs to be tested in a real situation5 It can be inferred from the passage that tremor resistant home _.A. is still being tried outB. is already under constructionC. has been in wide useD. will be put into wide use soon New Beijing, Great OlympicsThe 2008 Olympic Games has been the most cheerful and anticipated(预先的) event throughout Beijing ever since Beijing was rewarded the right to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, yet the focus should be shifted from making a promise to carrying out the promise made. In my point of view, to bridge the gap between the promise and reality, Beijing still has a long way to go. To begin with, basic-structure construction should be the primary concern. Such basic-structures as communications and transportation system and facilities ought to draw our constant attention. For example, traffic jam has been an age-old headache in Beijing. The scene of long queues of vehicles worming their way inch by inch will surely cause great disorder, and impair the image of the city meanwhile. Next, to add charm to convenience, overall city planning is quite necessary. Time permitting, a redesign of city plan and adjustment of architectural style would provide a better environment for cultivating the characteristic, mixing oriental elegance(东方的雅致) with international greatness, will tower aloft(在高处) among surrounding architectures. To achieve such effect, Beijing shall seek opinions from first-rate architects and make an overall plan. Thirdly, quality of the population should be improved. To make an international metropolis, both “hardware” and “software” are important. However, Rome was not built in a day. To carry out the promise of “New Beijing, Great Olympics”, deeds speak louder than words.6What does the underlined word “metropolis” in paragraph 2 mean ?A . suburb B. small city C. capital city D. town 7Which sentence is not true according to the authors opinion in the passage?A. Beijing has a crowded traffic since a long time ago.B. Experts in architecture are also important to the citys construction.C. In order to host the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing has preparations to make in many ways.D. Hardware” refers to quality of people in Beijing.8 How many aspects does the author mention to prepare for the Olympics in Beijing?A. two: basic-structure construction and peoples qualityB. three: basic-structure construction, traffic problem and overall city planning.C. two: basic-structure construction and overall city planningD. three: basic-structure construction, overall city planning and peoples quality.9What can be inferred from the text?A. Beijing is going to host the 2008 Olympic Games.B. To carry out the promise of “New Beijing, Great Olympics”is a long-term work.C. Traffic jams will cause a lot of trouble and make people feel sick.D. An overall city plan is to make Beijing a city with eastern and western cultures mixed together. The story of the day I lost my best friend to a car accident. The day a precious life was taken from us way too soon.It was a bright and Sunny day in November. Thanksgiving had been celebrated only two days before. Since it was a holiday weekend I had been on the phone with Greg the night before many times. His dad didnt want him to come over because of the holiday. I guess he finally wore him down and he called and said, “I can stay”. So, my mom, brother, and I went to pick him up. He was always smiling. The complete opposite of my shy self, Greg was always the life of the party. We got two large pizzas that Friday night. Ive never known anyone in my entire life who loved to eat more than Greg. Thats the way he was though. He was just enjoying life. And if it meant gaining weight or whatever, so be it. He would sit back and put his hands on his belly and just laugh. We (Greg, David, and I) did so many funny things together and had such great times. Things we should have done and things we shouldnt have done, Ill “Never” forget. On Saturday morning Dad took us out for breakfast. We all finished eating and followed my Dad up to the cashier. Greg asked Dad if he could have a candy bar. I looked at Greg shaking my head. He just laughed. After breakfast, Father took us to my Moms house. When we got out at Moms house there was no one home. So, one of us grabbed a big wheel and rode it down the steep driveway into the street. Just boys being boys. Greg and I did it several times until the last time. The car hit him on the head, knocking him around 75- 100 yards. My brother and I both ran screaming just yelling for help and crying. One of the neighbors called 911. I was in shock. That day was forever etched(铭刻) into our memories. It still hurts to think about it. Wishing we could have grown old together. Wondering how it would have been. Im sure It WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT.10We can describe Greg as_.A. impolite and greedy B. easy-going and optimisticC. shy and unconfident D. friendly and brave11Which shows the right order of the following events?Greg died of an accident while playing in the street.Greg went out for breakfast with the author. The author together with his bother and mom went to meet Greg. The three boys went out for Pizzas and had great fun.The author invited Greg to spend the weekend at his house.A. B. C. D. 12Why did the author shake his head hearing Gregs request?A. He thought Greg was too impolite to his father.B. He wondered why Greg liked eating so much.C. He was afraid his father couldnt afford it.D. He was sure Greg would put on weight. “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” Thats an old proverb(谚语) that is being quoted more and more often these days. And Im pleased about that.Today, more and more schools are reaching out to involve parents, community members and businesses to help shape a childs future.Parents need to be involved in their childrens education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a childs sports team are all great ways to be involved with your childs education. And dont forget to communicate with teachers-they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together. Its important to stay in touch with your childs education all through his or her school career.Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. Help with homework, read to a child, coach a childrens team, or provide emotional support. Help solve problems and build self-esteem. Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.Businesses can also help shape our childrens future. Invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how to use a computer; how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, teacher, nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands. It really does take an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility-and the joy-of bringing a child to his or her full potential.13The implied advice in the proverb “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” is that _.A. All the people in a village should give food to a child.B.Schools, parents, and other organizations should share the responsibility of shaping a childs future.C. Childrens should be brought up in the village where they were born.D. Schools should be set up in the village where a child was raised.14The text was written mainly for _.A. parents and members in organizationsB. teachers and studentsC. newspaper reporters and developing electriciansD. education experts and government officials15Students can get developed in practical working skill through _.A. parental involvement B. community activitiesC. business training D. school teaching16Which is NOT true according to the passage?A. Parents play an important part in childrens education.B. Communities have not a bit effect on the way to new and high ideal.C. Educating a child well demands of the work not only from school but from other organizations.D. Businesses may arrange some training courses for students. Wealth starts with a goal saving a dollar at a time. Call it the piggy bank strategy(策略). There are lessons in that time-honored coin-saving container.Any huge task seems easier when reduced to baby steps. I f you wished to climb a 12,000-foot mountain, and could do it a day at a time, you would only have to climb 33 feet daily to reach the top in a year. If you want to take a really nice trip in 10 years for a special occasion, to collect the $15,000 cost, you have to save $3.93 a day. If you drop that into a piggy bank and then once a year put $1,434 in a savings account at 1% interest rate after-tax, you will have your trip money. When I was a child, my parents gave me a piggy bank to teach me that, if I wanted something, I should save money to buy it. We associate piggy banks with children, but in many countries, the little containers are also popular with adults. Europeans see a piggy bank as a sign of good fortune and wealth. Around the world, many believe a gift of a piggy bank on New Years Day brings good luck and financial success. Ah, but you have to put something in it.Why is a pig used as a symbol of saving? Why not an elephant bank, which is bigger and holds more coins? In the Middle Ages, before modern banking and credit instruments, people saved money at home, a few coins at a time dropped into a jar or dish. Potters(制陶工) made these inexpensive containers from an orange-colored clay(黏土) called “pygg,” and folks saved coins in pygg jars. The Middle English word for pig was “pigge”. While the Saxons pronounced pygg, referring to the clay, as “pug”, eventually the two words changed into the same pronunciation, sounding the “i” as in pig or piggy. As the word became less associated with the orange clay and more with the animal, a clever potter fashioned a pygg jar in the shape of a pig, delighting children and adults. The piggy bank was born.Originally you had to break the bank to get to the money, bringing in a sense of seriousness into savings. While piggy banks teach children the wisdom of saving, adults often need to relearn childhood lessons. Think about the things in life that require large amounts of money- college education, weddings, cars, medical care, starting a business, buying a home, and fun stuff like great trips. So when you have money, take off the top 10%, put it aside, save and invest wisely.17What is the piggy bank strategy?A. Paying 1% income tax at a time.B. Setting a goal before making a travel plan.C. Putting aside a little money regularly for future use.D. Aiming high even when doing small things.18Why did the writers parents give him a piggy bank as a gift?A. To delight him with the latest fashion.B. To encourage him to climb mountains.C. To teach him English pronunciation.D. To help him form the habit of saving.19The piggy bank originally was _.A. a cheap clay containerB. a potters instrumentC. an animal-shaped dishD. a pig-like toy for children20The last paragraph talks about _.A. the seriousness of educating chil
