Unit42、Dolly Parton 多莉。 Dolly Parton was the fourth of twelve children. She was born in a small house near the Little Pigeon River near the tiny town of Locust Ridge, Tennessee. Dolly Rebecca Parton came into the world on January 19th, 1946, and because her family was very poor, the doctor who delivered her, Robert F. Thomas, was paid with a sack of corn. Of course, the doctor did not know that Dolly would write a song about him, or that she would become not only a beautiful woman, a multimillionaire, and a Hollywood star, but perhaps the most famous female country singer of all time. How did Dolly get from Locust Ridge to Hollywood? It was a result of her natural ability and strong determination. A family member remembers she began singing just about the same time she began talking. She made her first guitar from an old mandolin and two extra guitar strings. Even before she went to school, Dolly made up songs and stories and asked her mother to write them down so she could remember them. She became a local star at age ten, appearing on a TV show in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1957, she took a long-distance bus to Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she made her first record, Puppy Love. A year later, she made her first public appearance at Nashville s country music hall, but not as a singer: she played the drums with the Sevier High School Marching Band. Dolly loved Nashville! However, she was still in high school, so she couldnt go there often. She had to work long and hard before graduating in 1964. The day after the graduation ceremony, she fulfilled her first big dream: I graduated from high school on a Friday night and left early on Saturday morning for Nashville. Her uncle, country star Buck Owens, gave her a place to stay, and on the Saturday she arrived she took a bundle of dirty clothes to the local laundry. There she met Carl Dean, a carpenter. Two years later they were married in Georgia. They are still married today. Dolly began recording more songs, but none of them became popular. Success finally came to her as a songwriter when another singer recorded Put It Off Till Tomorrow, and it was a hit. Dolly was a fresh and original songwriter, and could find new ways to talk about familiar stories. She sang with a clear, strong, sweet voice. This helped her become popular with people who usually didnt enjoy country music. She also became popular internationally. In 1967, she began to write lots of popular songs. She appeared on television shows, and received prizes for her music, all very quickly. Her looks, personality and sense of humor, made her a natural for the movies. In 1980, she appeared in her first movie Nine to Five, playing a secretary. Dolly wrote and sang the film s theme song, and it was the most popular song of 1981. Dolly Parton now owns Dollywood, a large theme park near her hometown; she also bought the local radio station and moved it to Dollywood. She also began a program that promises a college scholarship to every student who graduates from the high schools in her home county. Its clear why Dolly is still popular after all these years. 3、The Automobile in American Life 汽车在美国生活The private automobile has long played an important role in the United States. In fact, it has become a necessary and important part of the American way of life. In 1986, sixty-nine percent of American families owned at least one car, and thirty-eight percent had more than one. By giving workers rapid, convenient transportation, the automobile has freed them from having to live near their place of work. This has encouraged the growth of the suburbs, but it has also led to traffic problems in the city. In addition, the automobile has contributed to the weakening of neighborhood ties by making it easy to keep up friendships at a distance and to enjoy leisure activities far from home. For farm families the automobile is very helpful. It has made it possible for them to travel to town frequently for business and for pleasure, and also to transport their children to distant schools. Family life has been affected in various ways. The car helps to keep families together when it is used for picnics, outings, camping trips, and other shared experiences. However, when teenage children have the use of the car (or own one), their parents cant keep an eye on them. If they are immature, they sometimes become involved in situations that lead to serious trouble. There is even greater danger if the driver (young or old) has been drinking alcohol or taking drugsor is showing off by speeding or breaking other traffic laws. Mothers of victims of such accidents have formed an organization called MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). These women want to prevent further tragedies. They have worked to encourage the government to establish and enforce a national minimum drinking age. They send speakers to schools and to meetings of citizens to impress people with the importance of careful, responsible driving. Students have formed a similar organization, SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) and are spreading the same message among their friends. For many Americans the automobile is a necessity as well as a convenience. But for some, it is also a mark of social status, an important middle-class symbol; and for young people, a sign of becoming an adult. Altogether, cars mean very much to Americans. 4、I. M. Pei 贝聿铭I. M. Pei is sitting in his living room and is talking about architecture or the designing of buildings. It is not just an idea, but the way in which that idea is done, that is important. This is what I mean by the architecture of ideas. I worry that ideas and the practice of architecture as a profession, as a business, do not come together often enough. He stops, then adds: Maybe my early training set me back. Maybe it made me too practical. That is an unexpected comment from a man like Pei, who runs a business that employs many people and has important customers all over the world. I. M. Pei questioning the value of being practical might seem like a bank doubting the value of money. Yet his company, I. M. Pei & Partners, is more than just a business that designs buildings. It has always tried to bring together beauty and art with business sense, and today it is probably the leader among American architectural companies that do very well both artistically and commercially. It is hard enough to become well known either as an artistic or as a business success in architecture: to do so as both is unusual and surprising. I. M. Pei, a leader in his field for more than thirty years, seems to get better and busier as the years go by. One reason for his success is that he is well known as a kind and thoughtful person. But it is also because of the seriousness of his work. He believes in improving on and developing from styles and designs that have been used before, not in newness for its own sake. Companies hire him because they believe that his designs are strong and modern without being shocking. Pei s style is based on geometric forms, like most of the architecture of modern times. But he has continued to use these forms while other important architects have begun to change their styles, making use of the forms of architecture from other countries and other periods in history. Ieoh Ming Pei was born in China in 1917, but he calls himself an American architectabsolutely. He went to the United States in 1935 to study architecture, and remained there because of the war. In the late 1940s he got a very good job and decided to become an American citizen. He has lived in New York since then, but he has never forgotten the land of his childhood. In 1978 Pei was invited to design a hotel in China. It was a very difficult thing for him to do because there seem to be only two choiceseither to copy the old Chinese style with red columns and golden roofs or to build modern Western buildings. I do not think either of these is right. There has to be a third way. Pei s third way is very much like traditional Chinese architecture. It uses the same kinds of materials and forms, and is only different in one important aspect: it will have a flat roof instead of a curved one because that kind is safer and less expensive. In New York City, I. M. Pei & Partners will build a convention center, that is, a large building for meetings and shows that will be much bigger than the hotel in Beijing, and in some ways much simpler. In fact, the biggest problem is that the center may look too much like a large box. Therefore they are working to create a number of public areas within the one huge space. These will be used for other things even when there are no special meetings or shows, and will make the building itself into a tourist attraction. It is possible that Pei s way of working may soon change, becoming more like one or the other of the two major modern directions. He might decide to make more use of the styles and ideas of the architecture of older cultures (as he did with his hotel in China) or he might decide to treat his buildings even more artistically (as he did the Kennedy Library in Boston). But it does not seem likely that Pei s work will move strongly in either direction. He believes his work gives his customers what they want and he tries to make his buildings fit the jobs they are supposed to do. Unit51、Cycling for Airwith Love Ted Schredd doesnt like cars. He wants people to stop driving because cars make the air dirty. Ted had an idea. He said, I m going to cycle around North America. I want to show everyone that cycling is a fun way to get around. If more people ride bikes, the air will be cleaner. He left his hometown with $ 160 in his pocket. When he got to San Diego, he met another cyclist. The cyclist invited Ted to speak at a big meeting about the environment. He said, Well pay your airfare to Texas and well pay you to talk about your cycling trip. Two hours later, Ted was on a plane to the environmental conference and to a big surprise! While he was at the conference, he met Deanna. It was love at first sight! They talked for six hours straight. The next day, Ted called Deanna and asked her to finish the trip with him. Deanna said yes, sold everything in her apartment, gave her notice at work, and was on the road with Ted 20 days later! Ted got up every morning at 6: 00 a.m. , but I wanted to sleep until noon. After a few days, they started having fun. As they cycled from Florida to Montreal and then back to Vancouver, every day was an adventure. People paid for their food in restaurants and gave them extra money. Some people gave them $ 50 or $ 100. They slept in people s backyards and drank beer with motorcycle gangs. On their way back to Vancouver, they stopped in Edmonton to visit Ted s relatives. During the stopover, they got married. People tied a Just Married sign and tin cans to the backs of their bikes. They now want to write a book about their trip. We want people to know that you can be an environmentalist and still have fun, Schredd said. 2、The Woman of His Dreams On a sunny Saturday in early June, Craig Peterson woke up in an apartment that was already as hot as an oven. It was very uncomfortable and he knew it would be worse by the end of the day. I ve either got to move, or buy an air-conditioner, Craig thought to himself. He decided to go out for breakfast. The restaurant down the street from his apartment was pleasantly cool. Craig sat down to enjoy a nice long breakfast with the morning paper. He opened the newspaper to the want ads; he thought he might find a used air-conditioner there. However, as he glanced through the newspaper, one of the ads in the Personal section caught his eye: Call L. Bunker 632-8471. Craig read the ad again: sports, reading, traveling, cookingall things that interested him. That s me, thought Craig. Someone out there is looking for me! I m the right age, I enjoy all those things, and I can drive. He went to the phone and dialed 632-8471. A gentle, female voice answered, Hello. Hello, began Craig. I m calling about the ad in the paper. Yes, said the lovely voice. Are you interested? “你喜欢?”Uh . well, I think so . I mean, yes! answered Craig nervously. That voice! Who did it belong to? L. Bunker. Linda? Laurie? Lynn? Was the travel writer a beautiful young woman? At 5: 30, Craig was standing in front of the house at 1421 Windsor Road. He was feeling a little silly about dropping everything to find out about the ad. Then the door opened and the most wonderful eyes Craig had ever seen looked out. Mr. Peterson? asked the voice. She let him in. She had dark hair, warm eyes, and a soft smile. Craig melted. This was the woman of his dreams. He heard her say, I d like you to meet Mr. L. Bunker, my father. Dad, this is Craig Peterson, who is answering your newspaper ad. Craig s eyes turned toward the sofa in the living room. He saw a man about 60 years old with the same soft, warm eyes as the young woman. Glad to meet you, Mr. Peterson, said the man. I m looking for a young man to travel around the U.S. with me this summer and help out with the driving. I m getting too old to do all the driving myself, and the days get long when you re traveling all alone. My daughter here used to go with me, but this summer she is too busy with her own work to be with me all the time. She has promised to join us for a few weeks during the summer, though.
