If the weather is not good ,it is better to sounding several times and get the average reading for record. Confirming the cover and spring in the normal position.(DO)Let make some paste onto the gauge near the oil level the sounding gauge down to touch the bottom .read the value on the gauge and record .put spring and cover back to normal position .Read the volume from settling and service tank.CALCULATING: check the sounding table with the represent trim and calculate the volume(V).calculate out the MT with real temperature (MT equal to V multiply volume rectify factor and weight rectify factor and density at 25 degree centigrade.) .Record the data .2Ability to control the Main Engine Cooling Oil Supply1.always keep the sump tank oil level in the normal value about 70cm.2.if the level goes down should add lube oil till normal position.3.if ambient temperature is very low ,always keep lube oil purifier running for heating and purifying lube oil .4.always keep lube oil pump running to keep stable pressure.3Ability to start and operate auxiliary machinery in parallel and set to automatic modeSTART: 1.clear the ambient of generator.2.make sure .lubricating oil pressure at the normal value .3.make sure the staring air can be direct use .4.Manually turn the flywheel to make sure shaft is in good condition with indicator cock open.5.close the indicator cock .6.Change automatic to manual operation.7.Start the generator by pushing start button.Palrallel:1.it should not be paralleled without waiting generator running for 5-10 minutes.2.turn the synchronous switch to the generator needed to be paralleled.3.make the synchrope pointer turning fast side and speed about 5RPM by adjust frequency.4.lighting on when the pointer arrives 11 oclock.5.turn off the synchrope 6.balance the load by adjusting generator speed.7.turn manual to automatic.4Understanding of procedures for testing the Main Engine1. parallel the generator.2. start lube oil pump 、FO boost pump 、FW pump3. manually lubricating ME ,start turning gear turning ME for about 15minutes then stop it .4. close air drain valve after drain the air reservoir and pipe ,open the air valve to main engine 5. blow the main engine with compressed air with turning gear disengaged.6. turn telegraph to test it confirming it is in good condition.7. test main engine after get the permission from bridge for dead slow ahead and dead slow astern to confirm main engine is in good condition.5Ability to test Main Engine1.palrallel the generator.2.start lube oil pump 、FO boost pump 、FW pump3.manually lubricating ME ,start turning gear turning ME for about 15minutes then stop it .4.close air drain valve after drain the air reservoir and pipe ,open the air valve to main engine 5.blow the main engine with compressed air with turning gear disengaged.6.turn telegraph to test it confirming it is in good condition.7.test main engine after get the permission from bridge for dead slow ahead and dead slow astern to confirm main engine is in good condition.6Ability to start all pumps1. confirm electric power supply and no flammable and explosive material around pump.2. turn the shaft(centrifugal/gear pump)and pulley(screw/reciprocating pump)to check whether the gland packing is tied or not and adjust it.3. open inlet and outlet (if priming centrifugal pump has a high negative suction head ,close outlet till the out pressure reaches the rated value.)4. start the pump by push the start button.7Arrival / Departure Procedures1Main Engine Operation1. parallel generator.departure :(1)manually lubricate ME by turning the lubricating handle. Start the turning gear, confirming the running direction is same with the direction of camshaft.(2) start LO pump, fresh water pump, FO boost pump(3) close air drain valve, open main air valve to main engine .(4) stop the turning gear, disengaged it .blow the main engine .(5) call the bridge to get the permission of testing telegraph and main engine .(6) close indicator cock .testing telegraph (ahead &astern)and main engine(dead slow ahead &dead slow astern).then record the testing time in the telegraph book.(7) turn the telegraph in stop position and turn the pointer to stand by position when get the signal of stand by from deck department.(8) maneuver operating ME till full away .set the lubricator handle position at 8 position when get the order of full away from bridge. Arrival :(1) set the lubricator handle at 10 from 8 for maneuver operating of ME.(2)drain air of air pipe and air reservoir .open the main air valve to main engine (3) maneuver operating ME till finish with engine ,during this time carry out engine test .(4) when get the signal of finish with engine from bridge, turn the telegraph pointer to FEW.(5)blow main engine with indicator cock open .(6)close main air valve to main engine ,open the air drain valve of pipe.(7)manually lubricating main engine ,engaged the turning gear and start the turning gear with confirming the direction of camshaft. Stop it after running 15-30 minutes.(8) stop LO pump ,HFO boost pump, FW pump, heating the cooling water if necessary. 2Ability to control the F.O. heating system1. normally ,fuel oil tank doesnt need to be heated except in cold weather condition.2. all heavy fuel oil tank (bunker, settling service) have heating pipe inserted to heat it in cold weather condition. also have tracing pipe to heat it in pipes .3. every kind of heavy fuel oil has its proper viscosity at purifier ,main engine inlet ,so it is essential to keep heavy fuel oil in proper temperature at all this position by adjusting the heating steam flow through setting a proper temperature at temperature controller. 3Understanding of starting and timing Boiler Circulating Pump1.start the pump with inlet valve full open and outlet valve a little open for a small flow to economizer chamber when get the signal of stand by from bridge.2. fully open outlet valve when the exhaust gas temperature rise(during main engine is in full away condition.)3.let the pump running for about 30 minutes with small flow when main engine stop then stop it with inlet valve and outlet valve closed.4Ability to change Over Fuel Oil supply1. it should be changed to MGO after machinery stop when it is running with using HFO .or it may not be stared next time ,especially in winter season.2. in order to save cost, it should change to HFO when machinery is normally running .it should be operation as follows: (1)heating HFO tank and pipe with steam to make the oil in proper viscosity and temperature and keep it .(2)change the changeover valve to HFO.3. if stop the engine while it is running with HFO, immediately discharge the HFO from fuel oil pipes, fuel oil filter, fuel oil injection pump and displace them with MGO as follows:(1) set the fuel oil change valve at the engine inlet and outlet to he MGO position.(2) Open the bypass valve of fuel feed pump.(3) Open the drain cock of fuel oil filter and drain valve of fuel oil main pipe.(4) Turn the flywheel to discharge the HFO from the fuel injection pipes and fuel injection valves .(set the start/stop lever in the running position ,and turn the flywheel under the fuel injection status.) 5Ability to set-up all machinery after initial run upall machineries ,after initial run up, we should set up them if found something abnormal. such as auxiliary engine, we should check the running of main bearing is normal or not by testing its temperature, and the connect rod must be check in good condition for it is very important part of engine. We should run it withoutload for a period of time and check the FW ,LO ,exhaust gas all in normal condition. if found something abnormal we should solve them.6Ability to understand alarm systems1. We are informed that, if alarm occurs ,there are some problems need us to solve.2. almost all devices in engine room have alarm device to let us take a notice at it .3. if alarm occurs ,we should immediately solve take attention to it and solve it as quickly as possible.4. alarms can be classified as high/low(temperature ,pressure ,level),start failure, no power and so on.5. some times if we can not solve the problem by repair the devices ,we also can doubt that there is something problem with the alarm system 7Watchkeeping at Sea1Correctly completing the Engine Room Log Book1. Engine room log book contents all the data that should be take attention to when duty patrol .and we should make sure that all data in normal arrange.2. we can calculate the slip of propeller with the data of average RPM (or total RC of main engine) and distance observed by bridge and propeller pitch.3. we should calculate the consumption and remaining of all kinds of oil in the log book4. all works done everyday should be filled into the log book5. when the ship departures from or arrives at a place ,all flow meter value ,OHN time, engine test time ,telegraph test time and stand by time should be filled in .2Ability to understand alarm systems1. P=(p1+p2+p3+p4+p5+p6)*A*rpm*S/60000P-horse powerp1.p2.p3.p4.p5.p6-the average pressure of each cylinderA-the area of pistonRpm-revolution per minuteS-the stroke of cylinderAbility to clean the Turbo Charger1. when cleaning only once(1) open the valves to pass air for 1-2minutes for cooling the cleaning device and then close the valves.(first open the valve to TC, then open the valve near the air inlet.)(2) Close the valve to TC then close the valve near air inlet.(3) fill the tank with specified quantity of cleaning medium. be sure to close the cap of the tank without fail.(4) Open the valves to pass air and inject the cleaning medium(open the valve near air inlet first, then open the valve to TC.)(5) Close the valve to TC then close the valve near air inlet.2. when cleaning repeatedly(1).if found very severe surging ,using about half of the quantity indicated in table 1 per cleaning for trail. Make sure the engine undergoes stabilized operation. And employ this cleaning method thereafter as a standard practice.(2).if repeat cleaning as (1)and found no improvements of the exhaust temperature /scavenging pressure/turbocharger revolutions. repeat the process again ,if fail again ,then open up the turbocharger for cleaning .97Other Operations1Management of boiler water treatmentPalkalinity:1.take a 200ml water sample in the stoppered bottle.2.add one P.alkalinity tablet and shake to disintegrate and sample will turn blue if P.alkalinity is present.3.repeat the tablet addition ,one at a time till blue turns to permanent yellow.4.count the numbers of tablets used carry out calculation :ppm equal to (numbers of tablets multiply 20)minus10.Chloride:1.take a 50ml water sample in the stoppered bottle provided.2.add one chloride tablet and shake to disintegrate and sample turns yellow if chlorides are present.3.repeat tablet addition one at a time till yellow changes to permanent red or brown.4.count the numbers of tablets used and carry out calculation :ppm equal to (number of tablet multiply 20 )minus 20.PHtest:1.take a 50ml sample of water in the plastic sample container provided.2.using the white 0.6 grm scoop add one measure of the PH reagent and stir it if needed.3.slect the 7.5-14.0 PH test strip and dip it into the sample foe one minute.4.withdraw the strip from the sample and compare the color obtained with the color scale on the PH indicator strips container.5.record the PH value on the log sheet provided against the date on which the test was taken. 2Starting of Centrifugal Pumps 1. open the priming cock located at the lower part of the separate tank .2. pour priming water from the upper part of the separate tank to such extent that the priming water is overflow from the overflow pipe .3. close the priming cock4. open the valve of main pump suction line5. close the outlet valve of main pump discharge line6. close the air vent valve7. turn the shaft coupling by hand to make sure of its light turning .8. open the discharge valve after confirming the discharge pressure rising up to rated pressure.3Operation of the Bilge SeparatorPreparation:1.the electric wire of power supply and alarm signal for OWS is correctly made.2.clear the ambient of OWS3.confirming no leakage from OWS and its pipe.Start:1.turn on the power supply to automatic oil discharge device 2.supply the compared water to oil content detector3.open all valve except second oil discharge valve4.start bilge pump with sea water supplied for a few minutes.5.open the second oil discharge valve manually to discharge oil depending on alarm signal or checking by the test cock fitted to the second stage.Stop:1.flush the OWS with sea water about 15 minutes.2.stop the bilge pump and switch off the electric power supply.3.close all supply and discharge valve.4.ensure the OWS is kept full of water .4Understanding of Main Engine Maintenance1. The nozzles of the engine should be freed from coke when it is necessary.2. the engine should be regularly cleaned and inspected depending on its working condition, and we engineer in charge of it should therefore form an idea of the guided provided for engine department by experience and make out a schedule of necessary operations.3. almost all maintenance of main engine can not be done when engine is running ,so the maintenance schedule should be properly made for the time when main engine is stoped.5Understanding of Aux. Engine Maintenance4. measurement of running performance.5. measurement of Max. combustion pressure.6. regulation of fuel injection volume7. adjustment of fuel injection timing.8. checking of fuel injection valve and adjustment of injection pressure.9. adjustment of suction and exhaust valve head clearance.10. adjustment of lube oil pressure and temperature 11. adjustment of fuel oil pressure 12. checking of cylinder jacket cooling water thermostatic valve13. cleaning of lube oil bypass strainer, lube oil strainer.14. cleaning of fuel oil filter.15. cleaning of strainer element.16. washing of turbocharger blower.17. maintenance of pressure gauge.18. measurement of crankshaft deflection19. adjustment of fuel injection pump pinion lubricating volume20. maintenance of fuel oil seal pot21. checking and replacement of anticorrosive zinc6Understanding of Refrigerator Compressor Maintenance1. always check the pressure and temperature ,and make sure they are in normal arrange.2. check lube oil ,change it if necessary.3. check the insulation of electric connection periodically.4. overhaul it if found big problem and change some parts with spares7Understanding of each Pump and Aux. Machinery Maintenance1. attention to lubrication of the shaft ,add some grease if necessary.2. ensure that the shaft seal or gland is not leaking liquid3. unsatisfactory operation or loss of performance may require minor or major overhauls4. common faults, such as no discharge ,may be a result of valves in the system being shut 5. air leaking ,a choked impeller or too tight a shaft gland can all lead to poor performance. 8Understanding of Piping System1. pipes are classified as: lube oil pipes ,fuel oil pipes , fresh water pipes ,sea water pipes ,steam pipes ,compressed air pipes , bilge water pipes and sludge oil pipes.2. all kinds of pipes have valve inserted among them .and the valve have different color to make a difference of them .LO(yellow),FO(red),FW(blue),SW(green),steam(silver),compressed air (grey),bilge water and sludge (black)3. all pipes assembled in engine room are of the proper position 4
