They spend too much time looking at process change, organisation and systems. (0)_. They have got things out of balance. In many companies, the development of strategy is in crisis. In a recent magazine poll, only six per cent of executives rated their company highly for long-term planning skills. (8) _. If this figure is accurate, it is not surprising that 29% of the FTSE 100 companies failed to achieve real sales growth between 1992 and 1996, when take-overs are excluded from the figures.(8)评析:前句谈到:杂志调查显示,只有6%的总裁对他们公司的长期规划评价很高。 C. Another survey estimated that only one in ten companies had the information they needed to make strategic decisions. C中含有数字only one in ten,而且话题和前句一致,都是关于strategy. There can be no doubt about the value of effective strategy-making. Recent research has shown that what are described as visionary companies - those with clear strategies for the future - deliver higher shareholder returns. They are less at risk from short-term earnings pressures because they know - and they can convince others - that they will survive these.(9) _ Times have changed. The big company of today is not being defeated by another big company but by the small companies. So how do they do it?. And where do companies that are failing in this respect turn? If a company accepts that their strategy development is not the best in the class, if they acknowledge that they need to do more to map out their future, influence rather than be influenced, shape their market instead of being shaped by it, how should they take on this strategy-making challenge?(9)评析:后一句谈到“时代已经变了,大公司不是被大公司,而是被小公司击败。” F. In the past, it was generally believed that the scale of the company was the most significant factor.Fields book Strategy Management puts forward a new approach to help companies rediscover the power of forward planning. (10) _. The book is straightforward to understand and use, and offers practical and specific directions. Research and empirical testing have proved that it can be useful in all areas of industry and should be of value to any company.(10)评析:前句谈到Field的书战略治理提到一种新的重新帮助公司发现未来规划的能力。 A Clear guidelines are given on how to become involved with customers and build new forms of competitive advantage. The approach put forward is based on two key building blocks, the first being that any company considering its future must have a commitment to win. (11) _. The second building block is competitive advantage. The author defines four prime areas that differentiate organisations and influence purchase decisions. These are the performance of the product or service, sold at the most attractive price, with extraordinary levels of service and strong emotional values. It may require only one of these areas to produce a competitive advantage. Take Coca-Cola for example. 前句中:the first being that any company considering its future must have a commitment to win. E If this comes across forcefully enough rivals will see it and go elsewhere, believing the market will be taken over by another.这里的this指的即为commitment to win。 B Through the brand name, the company has established a relationship with customers feelings that has made the product highly successful.Companies can explore how to win by building on their commitment and working around this approach to identify which one or more of these four sources of advantage will lead to successExample:A B C D E F GA Clear guidelines are given on how to become involved with customers and build new forms of competitive advantage.B Through the brand name, the company has established a relationship with customers feelings that has made the product highly successful.C Another survey estimated that only one in ten companies had the information they needed to make strategic decisions.D Lacking any debate about the future, these are typically reduced to a once-a-year form-filling exercise.E If this comes across forcefully enough rivals will see it and go elsewhere, believing the market will be taken over by another.F In the past, it was generally believed that the scale of the company was the most significant factor.G They do not invest enough effort in determining where they want to be in their markets and how they are going to beat their competitors考官支招BEC阅读难题解析Reading PART ONE在BEC Vantage 和Higher 中,Part one和Part two 是考生普遍反映难以应付的题型,这次我们就来解析一下第一个部分。 PART ONEQuestions 1-8 Look at the statements below and at the five newspaper items about different companies on the opposite page. Which company (A, B, C, D or E) does each statement 1-8 refer to? For each statement 1-8, mark one letter (A, B, C, D or E) on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once. There is an example at the beginning, (0).2 看题目:然后大家可以看题目了,这里很多考生会问到一个问题,就是先看Statement 还是现在 extract? 在这道题目中我们可以看到每句话的关键词(下划线部分):1 Shares in this company have stopped rising in value.2 This company has again revised its growth targets downwards.3 A problem experienced by this company has led to a change of personnel.4 Suppliers may refuse to charge this company less for their goods.5 A period of rapid growth immediately preceded a fall in this companys share price.6 This companys reputation differs from that of its competitors.7 This company is planning to operate from fewer sites.8 A rise in the value of this companys shares appears to depend on the success of its present strategy.3 处理文章:画完关键词后,就可以来阅读五段文章。 接下来, the companys recent warning that such growth is unlikely to be maintained has caused a leveling off in its share price. B 这里提到了 further reducing the cost of raw materials by 15% is perhaps over-ambitious, given the resistance to the 5% cut the company imposed last year. C 这里的选项是通过总结来判断出来的,最开始的股票价格为 405p,之后开始下跌到 64p,先升后降,选择 5D 注意 the turmoil and has resulted in the resignation of the director responsible for product and marketing. 3E abandoned the targets it set only six months ago. Move away from to more realistic figures. It is essential to do thorough _ before visiting China. It is viewed as extremely rude if you are _ in China.First of all, everyone exchanges _ with one another. The Chinese feel an obligation to provide _ at all times. 原文中的句子是这么出现的,第一句:it is imperative that you do extensive preparatory work. 第二句的原句是:the Chinese find it most discourteous if you are late for meeting. To begin with, all those present will swap business cards in itself a very important ceremony. 第四句中,hosts believe it is their duty to offer their visitors hospitality, even though the visitors themselves may much prefer a day off after intense negotiations. Part II PART TWOQuestions 13-22Section One(Questions 13-17)You will hear five short recordings. For each recording, decide what the speaker plans to do in their future career.Write on letter (A-H) next to the number of the recording.Do not use any letter more than once. After you have listened once, replay the recordings.A to get a directorship in a large companyB to gain a qualification in business administrationC to become self-employedD to move into marketingE to be an independent financial adviserF to design innovative modelsG to be the best in a particular fieldH to advise people in career management A - H 再来听具体内容:13题里,女声开头:would like a change.but.broaden knowledge, could have move into .but .invest in MBA.build potential.improve prospects. You have nothing to lose here, its nothing personal, its business. 150yrs ago, shipping industrybut now supermarketshealth authorities flue occurs - got off the ground (注意:习语,译为刚刚开始从事)advisory advice - farmers, fishermen and airlines; 我们在选项中可以看到,A选项的,supermarket retailers 和C选项的 maritime and aviation 确实都在原文中提到,只是都不能对应recent customer 这个核心概念,而只有B选项中的healthcare managers 替代了原文中的health authorities, 题干中的most recent 替代了原文中的 get off the ground。 PART TWO Questions 8-12Read the article below which reviews a new book on company planning. Choose the best sentence from the list on the opposite page to fill each of the gaps. For each gap 8-12, mark one letter (A-G) on your Answer Sheet.
